Hello, I have a quick question. I’ve been on keto since March 2017. Already lost about 45 pounds, down to 140 at 5’7 and about 16.4% fat. I take a magnésium cap each morning to be sure I got enough and eat at least 1 serving of baby spinach a day with olive oil or fatty dressing that have no carbs. My last meal is always between 5 and 9 pm (mostly around 6) and I don’t eat back before 12pm the next day on week days and not before next dîner on week end. Fasting isn’t something new to me and when I read it help getting in ketosis I continued.

After reading the article I shopped around and I noticed there are types of MCT oil that are derived from Palm Oil and are considerably less expensive. (http://prototypenutrition.com/keto8.html ) There is a litany of research that says that Palm Oil is on the same level a High Fructose Corn Syrup when it comes to your body. Is this true for MCT oil made from Palm Oil? Is Coconut derived superior to Palm Oil or a blend of the two?

I do need to lose weight, but I have ALWAYS been the biggest Keto nay-sayer. It defied everything I believe in. What turned the tables for me after a lot of research is that it's supposed to help with infertility and at this point, I'm desperate and will try anything. So, I gave it 30 days and said I would re-evaluate whether I want to continue. And let me tell you, I want to continue. This is what it's done for me so far:
There is a transition period in ketosis while the body is adapting to using fats and ketones instead of glucose as its main fuel. There can be negative symptoms during this period (fatigue, weakness, light-headedness, headaches, mild irritability), but they usually can be eased fairly easily. As you’ve said and others, I did this for weight loss not medical purposes. While it got me to the weight I am, I’m now having to watch my carbs and protein and calories. I’m stuck at the same weight for now, but my doctor said that my body may not level out until I’m at my goal weight (around 100 more to go). I’m not necessarily complaining, but this crap is scary when experiencing it. And now if I eat slightly too many carbs, the wrongs carbs, too little protein, or anything that my body disagrees with, I crash.
Urine strips or sticks: Ketone urine strips indicate ketone quantity on a color-grading scale. Urine tests are affordable and easy to use. However, be wary of inaccurate results. Urine tests only monitor leftover, unused ketones in your body. That’s why the strips will be darker, indicating more ketones, when you’re new to the diet. As you adapt to ketosis, your body uses more ketones, so there will be fewer ketones expelled through your urine. Being well-hydrated can also throw off tests.

In addition, most studies that compare carbohydrate utilization with fat utilization fail to take into account the fact that full “fat adaptation” that allows you to gain all the benefits of using fat as a fuel actually takes time – often more than four weeks – and up to a couple years. But since most studies that compare fat and carbohydrate burning are short-term, you rarely see the benefits of this kind of fat adaptation actually fleshed out in research. Instead, the average research participant begins the study in a non-fat adapted state, gets either a high fat or high carb diet, then launches into exercise. What about fruits and vegetables? All fruits are rich in carbs, but you can have certain fruits (usually berries) in small portions. Vegetables (also rich in carbs) are restricted to leafy greens (such as kale, Swiss chard, spinach), cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, bell peppers, onions, garlic, mushrooms, cucumber, celery, and summer squashes. Thanks for your comment. I did in fact state in my post that because I’m writing this on my blog, it is indeed how I feel and I’m sharing my personal experience and personal opinion about keto. I also did say that keto works for some, but not for others. Many people can change their health by cutting out processed foods, but that doesn’t mean we need to cut out complex carbs and all sugar and that also doesn’t mean we need to eat keto. Like I said in the post – do what works for you but also please do your own diligent research because we can always find arguments for each side.
How it’s done: Warm up the LEVL or Ketonix meter by plugging it in. Blow into it and wait for the flashing light indicating it’s reading your acetone levels. The software or the color and speed of the flashing light would tell your reading: green for least acetone, red for most acetone, less flashing for less acetone per color, more flashing for more acetone per color.
