Bravo!! It sounds great! I also managed to lose 20kg while on keto. I am 30 YO, have 3 amazing kids and a farm. Luckaly I have a husband who helps me a lot. I think that the reason why we are ok with keto is that we dont go mental about it. I am not scared of food, I like to eat and I am enjoying the food. I eat a lot of veggies, not only the green ones and other things… And I am happy….

A small Feb. 20, 2017, study looked at the impact of a six-week ketogenic diet on physical fitness and body composition in 42 healthy adults. The study, published in the journal Nutrition & Metabolism, found a mildly negative impact on physical performance in terms of endurance capacity, peak power and faster exhaustion. Overall, researchers concluded, “Our findings lead us to assume that a [ketogenic diet] does not impact physical fitness in a clinically relevant manner that would impair activities of daily living and aerobic training.” The “significant” weight loss of about 4.4 pounds, on average, did not affect muscle mass or function.
I know, I know you’d think with all these side effects I’d just give up on ketosis! but I enjoy the mental clarity and I have a lot of food sensitivities and gut and yeast problems and don’t tolerate carbs well either so I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place. Not craving what I can’t have constantly is LIFE CHANGING! (34 year old female with chronic fatigue, thin, hike for exercise).
The BBB, largely formed by the brain capillary endothelial cells, provides a protective barrier between the systemic blood and the extracellular environment of the CNS. Passage of FAs from the blood to the brain may occur either by diffusion or by proteins that facilitate their transport. Studies indicate that FATP-1 and FATP-4 are the predominant FA transport proteins expressed in the BBB based on human and mouse expression studies (Mitchell et al., 2011).
In this study by Dr. Dominic D’Agostino it is also mentioned that your blood brain barrier (BBB) “is relatively impermeable to most hydrophilic substances, such as ketone bodies. Therefore, the transport of ketones across the BBB is highly dependent on specific carrier-mediated facilitated transport by a family of proton-linked monocarboxylic acid transporters”. Basically, what this means is that MCT powder may act as a carrier to shuttle the ketone bodies across the BBB.
Protein: When people first reduce carbohydrates in their diets, it doesn't seem as though the amount of protein they eat is as important to ketosis as it often becomes later on. For example, people on the Atkins diet often eat fairly large amounts of protein in the early stages and remain in ketosis. However, over time, some (perhaps most) people need to be more careful about the amount of protein they eat as (anecdotally) the bodies of many people seem to "get better" at converting protein into glucose (gluconeogenesis). At that point, each individual needs to experiment to see if too much protein is throwing them out of ketosis and adjust as necessary.
I am not a doctor and this is not to be taken, interpreted or construed as medical advice. Please talk with a licensed medical professional about this. These are just my own personal thoughts and not a prescription or a diagnosis or any form of health care whatsoever. Your mother can avoid the "keto flu" by adding sufficient sodium to her diet and staying well hydrated, especially in the first few days of starting to reduce carbohydrates. The keto flu could also be called “carbohydrate withdrawal symptoms” because of the effects on hormonal and electrolyte balance. If you're not already using a device to measure ketones in your body, I recommend this one: https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/ketonix As far as how much to take, it all depends….you can actually do more than two servings per day if you want, and you can experiment to see how many servings your body should handle. You should know that it would be very difficult to overdose on ketones. They are water soluble, so any excess ketones will be eliminated mainly via the urine. Hope this helps!
Though I do appreciate your perspective based on your own experience which is very important and valid both to yourself and others, I would suggest that you state that your experience is only a personal one and that it isn’t a fact that this will be the experience for someone who’s body is in ketosis. I have personal experience with friends and family who have not only completely turned their lives around Healthwise but have reversed diabetes, cardiovascular disease and lost over 70 pounds which is a lot more than water weight, and have reversed some of the effects of a six-year-old epileptic girl who was told that she would have the symptoms she’s been experiencing for the rest of her life which have stopped at five months after following a ketogenic diet. I love hearing other peoples stories and experiences but it is important to acknowledge how cutting out complex carbohydrates and Sugars can really benefit a person’s mental state and their lives in general. Regardless of what nutritionist are saying in any part of the world if you watch a documentary called the magic pill it should open up your mind a bit on how following a meat , healthy fats and plant-based diet is what nature had always intended for human consumption and it’s people who have come in and created our food pyramid with what was being produced massively in order for people to make money which is wheat. I just thought I’d share my two cents, good luck with everything!
The good thing is that there are supplements that can help reduce the adverse effects of a specific diet on the human body. For instance, adopting a keto diet involves cutting out on a number of food options, hence, supplementing with certain nutrients may reduce the symptoms of the dreaded keto flu, making the transition to this way of eating easier. Here are the five best keto supplements for weight loss.
Aguirre said that one serving (or one-fifth of an entire avocado fruit) of an avocado contains 4.5 grams of fat. Most of the fat is in the form of healthy monounsaturated fats, she suggested, which is ideal for those observing the keto diet. Guacamole also contains several vitamins and minerals, according to Aguirre. Among those include potassium and vitamin C, she added.
Checking your ketone level is one way to know if you’re in ketosis. This metabolic state usually kicks in after three or four days of restricting your carbohydrate intake or going through periods of intermittent fasting. You don’t have to visit a doctor to measure your level. Pick up a ketone urine test from a nearby drug store, or use a blood sugar meter that’s capable of measuring ketones.

Ketone bodies are acidic, but acid-base homeostasis in the blood is normally maintained through bicarbonate buffering, respiratory compensation to vary the amount of CO2 in the bloodstream, hydrogen ion absorption by tissue proteins and bone, and renal compensation through increased excretion of dihydrogen phosphate and ammonium ions.[9] Prolonged excess of ketone bodies can overwhelm normal compensatory mechanisms, defined as acidosis if blood pH falls below 7.35.

Sleep enough – for most people at least seven hours per night on average – and keep stress under control. Sleep deprivation and stress hormones raise blood sugar levels, slowing ketosis and weight loss a bit. Plus they make much it harder to stick to a keto diet, and resist temptations. So while handling sleep and stress will not get you into ketosis on it’s own, it’s still worth thinking about.

I was Keto for 6 months and did not lose a pound ! Couldn’t figure out WHY – I was doing 36hr fast, staying in my macros etc… So after 6 months of NO progress I switched it up , and lost 11 pounds in 1 month. AND that was with adding in more carbs, grains, fruit etc.. I think Keto works for some and those that are very large will initially drop as they would on any diet plan cutting out the junk. It wasn’t for me .
So I have tried many things to loose weight and nothing worked, including this. This was a while ago. Then I decided I was not going to eat breakfast anymore, because in order to loose weight, you need to be a little bit hungry. So anyways, I have been doing intermittent fasting (eating at noon and dinner 6-8) and the first day was hard for me but I stuck to it with the help of some lemon water. The next 3 days became easier and easier. Today, I realized I was not at all hungry for dinner and was a little scared, because I didn’t want my metabolism to slow down (I’ve had problems in the past) so I googled up what this means. I saw that it was ketosis and was so excited. When I went to check the ketosis strips, it was actually working and I was so so happy. The fact that I was trying so hard with all of these fancy recipes and eating 3 meals a day frustrated me. I do not count my calories or anything else. I do some excercise for about 30 minutes everyday. For those who are struggling, please please please! Try intermittent fasting if the ketogenic diet isn’t working for you.

On Cyclical keto, I noticed these weird bouts of depression every time I carbed up on the weekends. I saw this study and they were linking inflammation to depression and it makes sense because every time I knock myself out of ketosis, I deal with this weird depression, then a few days back into keto, my head feels more clear. Strict keto is where I feel the best. This is where I’m getting the best results. I keep my fat percentage higher, around 80 percent."
Thanks for your comment. I did in fact state in my post that because I’m writing this on my blog, it is indeed how I feel and I’m sharing my personal experience and personal opinion about keto. I also did say that keto works for some, but not for others. Many people can change their health by cutting out processed foods, but that doesn’t mean we need to cut out complex carbs and all sugar and that also doesn’t mean we need to eat keto. Like I said in the post – do what works for you but also please do your own diligent research because we can always find arguments for each side.

Experts are split on whether the keto diet is a good idea. On the one hand, Lori Chang, registered dietitian and a supervisor at the Center for Healthy Living at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles, says using a “cleaner” source of energy—ketones rather than quick-burning carbohydrates—can improve mood and energy levels. When you eat refined carbohydrates or just too many carbs in general, the blood is flooded with excess insulin, Chang says. "This can lead to a blood sugar rollercoaster that stresses the body and negatively impacts energy levels and mood. When you’re in a state of ketosis, however, ketone bodies don’t require insulin to cross the blood-brain barrier, which wards off unfavorable blood sugar levels."
Ultimately, cancer is highly complex, whereas some tumors may be highly responsive to carbohydrate restriction, others may become adapted to utilise fats or ketones. Cancer, and the treatments currently in use cause unpleasant systemic effects such as muscle wasting and compromise of the immune system, therefore any interventions should be undertaken under the guidance of a doctor. There are limited treatment options available for some types of cancer, many drugs have toxic side effects and many types of cancer have a poor prognosis. In these cases, considering metabolism as an adjunct to conventional treatments is interesting, and offers the potential of another avenue of attack on cancer.
I'm constantly on the lookout for low-carb diet and ketosis friendly option that allow hard charging athletes, especially athletes who have glycolytic, high-intensity demands during sport, to get a “slow bleed” of carbohydrate into their body. For example, “UCAN Superstarch” is one such option, but, unfortunately, I've found that many athletes and exercise enthusiasts tend to get gastric distress or excessive fermentation from that slow-release starch.
In order to obtain the most comparable measures, it is useful to measure blood ketones at the same time each day. Measuring immediately on waking means that there are fewer potential variables that could alter the measurement, such as exercise, or different food intake. However, it can also be useful to check ketone levels around 60-90 minutes after an intervention such after eating a fat rich meal or consuming exogenous ketones.
Want candy but you don’t want to stray from keto? A low-carb peanut butter cup has about the same calories, gram per gram, as a Reese’s. Want to slap all that bacon between something other than lettuce wraps? Some low-carb bread will run you $7.99 per loaf whereas bread that doesn’t taste like sadness with the same number of calories per slice is generally about half the cost. How about chocolate? A chocolate brand that boldly calls itself ‘The Good Chocolate’ is sweetened with a sugar alcohol commonly associated with some nasty gastrointestinal effects when consumed excessively. It’s also $8 for a 2.5-oz bar, and about as calorically dense as a Hershey’s bar. Low-carb flour? Not surprisingly, it costs more than normal old flour, and the more expensive one has more calories.
I see a lot of people say that ketosis is great for insulin sensitivity. BUT, in my experience ketosis causes physiological insulin resistance whereby the muscles and liver are sparing glucose for the brain. Hence, glucose tolerance actually goes down during ketosis. As such, is it possible that post workout carbs could do a lot more damage than they would on a non-ketogenic diet? Or maybe, as Kiefer suggests, glucose uptake post workout is not moderated by insulin at all i.e. muscles soak up glucose regardless of their insulin sensitivity? Or maybe cyclical ketosis doesn’t allow liver glycogen to get low enough to trigger physiological insulin resistance?
Ask yourself: am I doing this for weight loss? Am I following a trend? Am I listening to MY body or something that someone told me? Because I can tell you that a lot of the things that keto promotes just aren’t true. So please do your own diligent research before doing ANY type of diet. I don’t want you to end up like me, being afraid of carbs, because carbs are NOT the enemy (and neither is sugar!) It’s the diet industry that is the enemy in my opinion.

Pro Tip: On keto, you don’t need to fixate on a precise calorie count because weight loss comes from getting within your ideal calorie range. However, it will help to pay attention to your macronutrient proportions: 5 percent of calories from carbs; 20-30 percent from protein; and 70-80 percent from fat. Davoodi adds that drinking plenty of water to break down fat is particularly important on a high-fat diet like keto.

Of course, ketosis itself comes with its own risks. Circulating ketone bodies make your blood too acidic, and your body will draw calcium from your bones as a buffer. This also happens in ketoacidosis, which is when you have so many ketone bodies that it becomes dangerous and will draw far more calcium out of your bones. Giancoli notes that dieters usually aren't in such an extreme starvation mode that they develop ketoacidosis. There are few to no studies on healthy adults undertaking a non-therapeutic ketogenic diet, but studies of epileptic children on the diet show increased bone demineralization and high calcium levels in the blood.
For any long 90+ minute workouts or competitions for which glycogen depletion is a potential issue, use Glycofuse, but use half of the recommended serving of it, and add one scoop of Catalyte electrolytes, one scoop of Aminos, and one serving of medium chain triglycerides in the form of Brain Octane, KetoCaNa or KETO//OS (pick your poison, it’s up to you).
Then there’s medium chain triglycerides (MCT’s). Most dietary fat has to be converted into water soluble molecules that then need to enter the liver via your lymph system. Your liver then converts these molecules to fatty acids and ketone bodies. But unlike most other forms of dietary fats, MCT’s can enter your liver directly without having to go through your lymph system. This means that consuming MCT’s gives your body an opportunity to quickly produce ketone bodies.
Plus, it's not like I couldn't feed my body anything until noon. Low-carb keto drinks such as tea, water, and coffee were all options, and Dr. Axe suggested adding protein (such as his bone broth or collagen protein powders) to my liquids to help fend off hunger. So, throughout my two weeks, I experimented with Dr. Axe's bone broth protein and collagen protein, as well as unsweetened nondairy milks such as almond and oat milk. I'll cut to the chase on this one: While expert opinion is mixed on the bioavailability of collagen powder and its potential health benefits, through trial and error, I landed on coffee with oat milk and collagen peptides as my go-to morning brew. I also took some of Dr. Axe's Keto Fire supplements in the morning. They contain exogenous ketones, which is a fancy way of saying bonus ketones my body doesn't produce on its own.
Insulin is a hormone that lets your body use or store sugar as fuel. Ketogenic diets make you burn through this fuel quickly, so you don’t need to store it. This means your body needs -- and makes -- less insulin. Those lower levels may help protect you against some kinds of cancer or even slow the growth of cancer cells. More research is needed on this, though.
Oh, what a difference a year makes! Keto has worked WONDERS for my body. Last year I weighed about 13 lb heavier in the photo on the left, and was running or doing cardio every day but eating tons of carbs. Now I still workout every day, but function via a high fat diet. The pic on the right was taken yesterday (I’ve been so MIA because I’ve been at the beach with my friends!). Makes me so happy to see such PROGRESS!! 💪💪💪 • • • • • #keto #ketogenicdiet #ketomeals #ketodiet #ketotransformation #ketobreakfast #ketorecipes #followforfollow #followtrain #follow4follow #lowcarb #lowcarbdiet #yum #food #ketodinner #weightloss #fitness #lchf #weightlossmotivation #ketofam #fitspiration #weightloss #ketofam #ketobreakfast #lchf #myketotransformation
