I also was told to go on Keto but by my doctor as it was recommended for my insulin resistance. Initially I lost weight but then gained and every tip on every Keto diet site (more fat, increase calories, decrease protein ,etc) made me gain and gain. Finally I said enough. I still eat low carb but not crazy low and healthy fats still but not heavy fat load. I don’t eat rice pasta rarely bread and keep veggies to those lower in sugars. Weight is down and for a 62 yr old post menopausal woman I’m doing ok.

Since the birth of my daughter 32 years ago, I have struggled with my weight. I remember when “fat free” was the only way to go. So for a year, I avoided fat like the plague and ended up with hair loss, gray dry skin and just an overall unhealthy look despite the fact I was at my healthy weight. Now we are suppose to eat massive amounts of fat according to the professionals. I have since learned that going from one of extreme to the other is not the answer and your blog has helped me to realize that I need to do what works for my body. It is as if you gave me permission to not listen to all the so called experts. I have started eating natural, If God made it I eat it. I no longer eat foods that come out of a box or that was created in a lab. I completely agree with your blog. Thanks for speaking out!
With the recent research findings, and the increasing availability of exogenous ketones, it is unsurprising that some authors have said (with a hint of skepticism) that they “could be the next magic bullet’ for athletes39. More research is required to understand the best use cases, doseage protocols, compounds etc, however it is clear that exogenous ketones are a new ‘tool’ in the athlete’s arsenal that can be used to provide an alternative, energetically favourable fuel source without needing dietary manipulation. 

Notably, it can take several months to become fully ‘keto-adapted’ and performance can decline in the short term as these adaptations occur. It is also likely that individual responses to the diet vary. These factors make design and interpretation of sports science studies challenging and leave the door open for continued disagreement between scientists on each side of the debate. He died in April this year due to a massive heart attack. He was only 38. Autopsy report showed severely advanced coronary artery disease and almost complete heart block. The medical examiner said that this had to of started in his early 20s to be this advanced and that it's very hereditary. (at that time he ate HORRID and smoked, was very very overweight, stressed to the max etc). She stressed that everyone in his family be checked including children.
People (and even some ill-informed doctors) often confuse ketosis, which is a perfectly normal metabolic process, with ketoacidosis, which is a life-threatening condition. The latter is the consequence of insulin-deficient subjects having out-of-control blood sugar levels, a condition that can occur as well in alcoholics and people in a state of extreme starvation. Ketosis and ketoacidosis may sound vaguely alike, but the two conditions are virtually polar opposites and can always be distinguished from each other by the fact that the diabetic has been consuming excessive carbohydrates and has high blood sugar, in sharp contrast to the fortunate person who is doing Atkins.

I was Keto for 6 months and did not lose a pound ! Couldn’t figure out WHY – I was doing 36hr fast, staying in my macros etc… So after 6 months of NO progress I switched it up , and lost 11 pounds in 1 month. AND that was with adding in more carbs, grains, fruit etc.. I think Keto works for some and those that are very large will initially drop as they would on any diet plan cutting out the junk. It wasn’t for me .
Dr. Stephen Phinney, who has been doing research on ketogenic diets since the 1980s, has observed that people don't do as well when they are consuming a lot of these oils (mayonnaise and salad dressings are a common source). This could be because omega-6 fats can be inflammatory, especially in large amounts, or some other factor. In his studies, people didn't feel as well or perform as well athletically.
The fatty acids then flow into the bloodstream and are taken up by body tissues.  Once in the cells, the fatty acids are transported into the mitochondria of the cell to be metabolized carbon by carbon in a process called beta-oxidation. As glucose levels fall and fatty acid levels in the blood rise, the liver cells ramp up beta-oxidation which increases the amounts of a molecule called Acetyl-CoA. As the level of Acetyl-CoA rises, it is shunted to a process called ketogenesis. Ketogenesis generates a ketone body called acetoacetate first, and this ketone is then converted into the two other types of ketones: beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone.  Meanwhile, the glycerol part of the fat molecule gets converted into glucose in a process called gluconeogenesis, which means "make new sugar".
A randomized control study in 2017 examined the effects of a ketogenic diet combined with Crossfit training on body composition and performance. Results from this study concluded that subjects following a low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet (LCKD) significantly decreased body weight, body fat percentage and fat mass compared to those in the control group[*].
