Ben, great article! I recently did my own ketosis experiment and didn’t catch the 100-200g advise until later than I should have, I’m guessing. Great results for 1-2 months but after 3 months I quit sleeping through the night and would wake after about 4 hours of rest each night. My guess is that the extra carbs at night coupled with iodine supplements should allow me to “have my cake and eat it too?” Any other suggestions on the sleep issue? I’ve gone back to High Fat/Low Carb, have improved sleep but I do miss nutritional ketosis and want to try again once my sleep is stable. Thank YOU!!!
I was shocked at how easy it was (using the new supplements and methods outlined below that have been developed since my initial foray into ketosis) to get into ketosis without extreme carbohydrate restriction, without excessive, diarrhea and “diaper-moment” inducing amounts of MCT and coconut oil, and without the inflammation, triglyceride and hormonal issues, or social discomfort I outline above. I was also able to achieve a much more immediate and deeper level of ketosis than I ever achieved in previous experiments sans these newer strategies you’re going to learn about.

"I enjoy what I do on a daily basis with Instagram and the interactions I have within the keto community. The relationships extend beyond keto. I started an Instagram account to keep himself accountable and have since made countless friendships with people all over the world. I receive frequent messages from people saying thank you and it motivates me to stay involved."

But not everyone’s a fan. “For most people, going keto means jumping on the diet of the moment bandwagon,” says Jackie Newgent, RDN, a culinary nutritionist in New York City and the author of The All-Natural Diabetes Cookbook. “For most, it’s a fad diet that will offer temporary results.” That runs counter to Newgent’s usual advice to find an eating plan you can follow for a lifetime. She also worries that reducing carbs as much as the original keto diet calls for will cut out nutrient-rich foods, like whole grains, certain veggies, and fruits.

For example, in trained people and athletes who eat a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet (not to be confused with a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet), a large amount of fat burning can take place at intensities well above 80 percent maximum oxygen utilization (VO2 max) – allowing for very-high-intensity or long efforts with low calorie intake and also allowing for use of fat fuel stores during long steady-state exercise, even at a relatively fast pace (so much for the “fat burning zone” giving you the best bang for your buck). With high-fat, low-carb intake, you can go hard and still burn tons of fat. In addition, this means that more carbohydrate stores will be available when you really need them, such as for an all-out, 100%, maximum effort.
This website is helpful I gained ten pounds just by snacking. I on the Keto diet with 15 carbs a day I stopped all snacking, stopped staying up late because it screws up cortisol / hormones which causes weight gain so I started going to bed at 9:30 on the dot. I typically eat one meal a day a green salad with either, chicken or prawns and simple homemade dressing . Sometimes I do a big glass of a low carb, a chocolate mocha protein drink with a nut milk and ice blended this does the trick. I never eat after 4:00. I have coffee with a little butter and drink lots of water I use Ketostix every other day to see if I’m still in ketosis. I did get foot cramps and increased sea salt intake and it stopped. I love fasting and going to yoga I feel clearer, lighter and just happier. Just keep with a program and you will see light at the end of the tunnel. Some people have great success with zero carbs. I have never tried it but read about it.

I’ve been trying this keto diet that my dr.and daughter recommended, it’s been close to a week. I’ve changed my food intake, no bad carbs that I know of, was a huge chip addict stopped all that with no cravings. I’m not seeing any results I’m getting discouraged and everything sounds so complicated watching this, measuring that, I don’t have a clue what I’m doing. just that I stopped bread, pasta, poratoes, rice all those kind of carbs.I’m drinking more water eating green vegetables and trying to increase my fat intake. I don’t feel motivated to exercise which probably doesn’t help and have 100-130 to lose. I need help I don’t understand or have the time create a lot of meals and measure my fat, protein and carb intake.

Dr. Stephen Phinney, who has been doing research on ketogenic diets since the 1980s, has observed that people don't do as well when they are consuming a lot of these oils (mayonnaise and salad dressings are a common source). This could be because omega-6 fats can be inflammatory, especially in large amounts, or some other factor. In his studies, people didn't feel as well or perform as well athletically.

Plus, it's not like I couldn't feed my body anything until noon. Low-carb keto drinks such as tea, water, and coffee were all options, and Dr. Axe suggested adding protein (such as his bone broth or collagen protein powders) to my liquids to help fend off hunger. So, throughout my two weeks, I experimented with Dr. Axe's bone broth protein and collagen protein, as well as unsweetened nondairy milks such as almond and oat milk. I'll cut to the chase on this one: While expert opinion is mixed on the bioavailability of collagen powder and its potential health benefits, through trial and error, I landed on coffee with oat milk and collagen peptides as my go-to morning brew. I also took some of Dr. Axe's Keto Fire supplements in the morning. They contain exogenous ketones, which is a fancy way of saying bonus ketones my body doesn't produce on its own.

Ben – curious about your thoughts on this. I went into ketosis (using LOTS of coconut oil) but it raised my cholesterol and doc was worried about my lp(a) level (17mg/dL on VAP) even though crp was 0.5, trigs 51 and a1c was 5.2. Advised a low fat diet. Have you seen this before with folks on a lchf/ketosis diet and is there anything to be concerned about? Off to read your coconut oil article. Thank you!
Checking your ketone level is one way to know if you’re in ketosis. This metabolic state usually kicks in after three or four days of restricting your carbohydrate intake or going through periods of intermittent fasting. You don’t have to visit a doctor to measure your level. Pick up a ketone urine test from a nearby drug store, or use a blood sugar meter that’s capable of measuring ketones.
Practically speaking, because it takes several days to raise blood ketone levels by following the ketogenic diet it has been virtually impossible to study the effects of ketosis on brain injury in humans. It is also complicated by the difficulty in quantifying the extent of the damage without repeated imaging and there is a lack of reliable biomarkers for concussion. Furthermore, concussions can’t be ‘administered’ to humans experimentally, making it impossible to study in a controlled setting. Therefore much of the proof of concept research looking a ketosis for concussion has been done in animals. Nevertheless, the results are promising: rats who were given a ketogenic diet or ketone precursors before67 and after68 a controlled concussive injury have were found to have improved brain energy metabolism, and improved cognitive and motor function post injury. Also, giving exogenous ketones as an injection post-injury protected the brain against glutamate induced excitotoxicity69 and alleviated the decrease in brain ATP that occurs due to the depression of glucose metabolism70. Therefore, as scientists’ ability to quantify concussion in humans improves, ketosis could be an interesting intervention to attempt to reduce the harmful after-effects.
The keto diet is known for helping people lose a few pounds very quickly, says Becky Kerkenbush, RD, a clinical dietitian at Watertown Regional Medical Center. Carbs hold on to more water than protein or fat, so when you stop eating them, your body releases all that extra H2O by making you pee more. As a result, the scale might read a few pounds lower, and you may look a bit leaner.
When you eat foods high in carbohydrates and fat, your body naturally produces glucose. Carbohydrates are the easiest thing for the body to process, and therefore it will use them first – resulting in the excess fats to be stored immediately. In turn, this causes weight gain and health problems that are associated with high fat, high carbohydrate diets (NOT keto).
I don’t agree with this article completely. I’ve been Keto for a year and half and have kept off the 45 lbs I’ve lost. I’ve gained more muscle mass by lifting and take mineral supplements which I needed before as well. I’ve not purchased and if the Keto “stuff” everyone seems to be selling these days. I still love this way of eating since my intestinal issues after gone and I’m feeling great. It may seem like a fad and with that reach person needs to research very careful to what is healthy and what is not.

I had the same experience as you with Keto. I lost over 40 lbs. but did not have any energy and I did not have the carefree enjoyment of my life with family, friends, or myself. Was not for me either. I still eat healthy as I am a critical care nurse and I workout 5-6 days a week. There is much less stress without Keto in my life and most definitely much more healthy foods and higher spirits! 🙂

As a matter of fact, it’s more dangerous to have high levels of cholesterol and high levels of CRP than low levels of cholesterol and high levels of CRP – even if your high levels of cholesterol are “healthy”, big fluffy LDL particles, and not small, dense vLDL particles. In other words, no matter how many healthy fats you’re eating, these fats may actually come back to bite you if you’re creating high inflammation from too much exercise, not enough sleep, exposure to toxins and pollutants, or a high-stress lifestyle.
Wow! Amazing article. I don’t read blogs regularly, but I’ll be reading more of yours. I am on day 11 of a fast to get me into ketosis; 7 days bone broth and now on day-4 water only. Intentions are weight loss (10# down, 15# more to go) and immunity improvement/gut help. Planning 9 days of whey water, fermented veggies and mad probiotics when the water days are done (day 14?). After this fast I want to stay fat adapted, start training again and get down to 8% body fat. I believe you have cut that journey significantly with this article. Thank you.
In many developing countries, the ketogenic diet is expensive because dairy fats and meat are more expensive than grain, fruit and vegetables. The modified Atkins diet has been proposed as a lower-cost alternative for those countries; the slightly more expensive food bill can be offset by a reduction in pharmaceutical costs if the diet is successful. The modified Atkins diet is less complex to explain and prepare and requires less support from a dietitian.[54]
Lasty, why are you doing keto? Because a friend did it? Everyone is different. Keto didn’t work for me (and doesn’t work for most people in the long run.) High carb works much better for me. I suggest listening to your body and letting it guide you in your food choices. You will end up much happier. It starts with learning to love yourself as you are. If you don’t, you’ll never be happy, no matter what weight you are.

This is an absolutely necessary function for basic survival. As the body can only store carbs for a day or two, the brain would quickly shut down after a couple of days without food. Alternatively it would quickly have to convert our muscle protein into glucose – a very inefficient process – just to keep the brain going. That would make us waste away quickly. It would also ensure that the human race could hardly have survived all those millennia before we had 24-7 food availability.

Dave Asprey is one such tech guy-turned-low-carb guru. Asprey is now the CEO of Bulletproof 360, which sells butter-larded coffee and myriad supplements to the masses — and which raised $19 million in Series B funding last year. Over the past two decades, Asprey says he’s spent $1 million to “biohack” his body, turning it into a fat-burning machine and even increasing his IQ by 20 points. (Asprey has also said that he blocks waves out of his cells with glasses and takes supplements to help with the “low oxygen high EMF [electromagnetic field] environment” on airplanes, so.)

How It Works On cyclical keto, also called keto cycling, you’ll cycle in and out of keto — usually on the diet for five days, followed by one or two days with more carbs. “The point of keto cycling is to make it easier for someone to follow,” Kizer says. “Every five to six days they can have the carbohydrates they’ve been entirely restricting.” There’s no set protocol of what your carb days should look like, but Kizer warns not to go overboard because that will make it more difficult for the body to return to ketosis.
Jump up ^ Ringberg TM, White RG, Holleman DF, Luick JR (1981). "Body growth and carcass composition of lean reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandusL.) from birth to sexual maturity" (PDF). Canadian Journal of Zoology. 59 (6): 1040–1044. doi:10.1139/z81-145. ISSN 0008-4301. Body growth and carcass composition were measured in lean reindeer during the juvenile growth period between birth and 3 years of age. Mean carcass weight in these lean reindeer was 56 ± 4% of body weight and the deposition of body muscle and bone mass was linearly correlated with body weight after the 1st month of age. The weight of the brain relative to body weight and carcass weight declined, while the relative changes in heart, liver, kidneys, parotid glands, and tissues of the gastrointestinal tract were small after the neonatal period. The extractable fat content in carcasses increased from 4.4 to 11.4% of wet weight or approximately 100 g fat at birth and 3.5 kg fat in adult reindeer. Fat-free dry matter represented a constant percentage (18–20%) of wet carcass weight independent of body weight after the neonatal period, while a significant inverse relationship between carcass fat and body water was found.
Ketones may also have effects in neurons beyond their use as an energy source. Preliminary work shows ketones can affect neurotransmitter release, reduce inflammation in the brain and reduce damage caused by oxidative stress8. Whilst the strength of the clinical evidence supporting the use of ketosis varies according to the condition, future work should look to explore the efficacy and underlying mechanisms further. Ketosis (by diet or by exogenous ketones) could offer an intervention that has good efficacy, but without the side effects profile of many drugs currently in use. It should be noted that the use of ketogenic diet or exogenous ketones in the conditions discussed below is still classified as ‘experimental’ in the most part and so individuals should not their alter medication or diet without full medical supervision.
An increase in fat burning ability could decrease the efficiency of exercise: one adaptation to a high fat diet is an increase in a process called mitochondrial uncoupling. This means that some of the stored energy from metabolic substrates is not used to generate ATP but is ‘dissipated’ leading to a decrease in efficiency of energy production 26 ,19.

If you would like to read more on ketogenic diets and ketosis, Jeff Volek and Steve Phinney discuss the new method of checking blood ketones in their book "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance", and they also offer another good book "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living", which is a good book for those who need an introduction to the science of ketogenic diets.

Thank you Jennifer for a great month. I feel so much better :) I haven’t worked out much at all but just listening to my body has made a huge difference. I noticed a difference the first week in that I no longer had that awful daily bloating. Plus because I am consuming more of the good fats, I no longer experience the sugar crashes and shaky feeling in between meals. What a game changer! Jaime W.
These types of back-and-forth weight fluctuations can contribute to disordered eating, Kizer says, or can worsen an already unhealthy relationship with food. “I think this diet appeals to people who have issues with portion control and with binge eating,” she says. "And in many cases, what they really need is a lifestyle coach or a professional counselor to help them get to the bottom of those issues."

You need to do a “common man’s” version of a good ketogenic nutrition program or discussion. Great article, and I leaned a few things. Those Ketone Salts and other supplements can get pricey. I eat a very low carb and high fat diet and meander in and out of ketosis during the week. A pure ketogenic diet is so restrictive that meals it can get very repetitive during the week. I’d like to learn more about cooking with oils and how temperature effects their qualities. I can only handle eating so much raw food, and I love to cook my greens and other vegetables in bacon fat and coconut oil. It will be next May before I can get my blood work performed (insurance reasons) so until then I’ll need to be careful and hold back on those after supper dark chocolate excursions! Thanks!!

Perhaps you fall into the category of Olympic athletes who would dope with damaging drugs, even if they knew it would kill them. However, if you desire a long, high-quality life, you don’t want to be a washed up ex-exerciser with diabetes, or you don’t want to experience joint, nerve and brain inflammation, damage and degradation, you may need to adjust your lens.
I'd recommend starting with glucose and hemoglobin A1C, along with a good multi like https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/multi and a fish oil like the one at greenfieldfitnesssystems.com – Anyways, I'd be happy to help you via a personal one-on-one consult. Just go to https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/coaching. and then choose a 20 or 60 minute consult, whichever you'd prefer. I can schedule ASAP after you get that.
The average daily goal for keto is 20 grams of net carbs. Net carbs are the total carbs in a given serving of food, minus the carbohydrates that are supplied by fiber. You’ll find carb grams quickly add up, even when you’re choosing the best low-carb foods, like spinach and avocado. Keeping your body in a quasi-keto state can be hard on you, warns Santo: “This will leave you feeling sluggish, foggy, and discouraged,” he says. “It will most likely cause a weight plateau, and maybe even weight gain.” Here’s what it’s really like to be on a keto diet.
Key Takeaways: Two large-scale meta-analysis indicate that people who consume a low-carb diet (<50 g carb/day) lose a slightly larger amount of weight compared to people eating a low-fat diet over 12-month span. Neither meta-analysis assessed the loss in body fat percentage within each diet and which other dietary of exercise interventions promoted weight-loss when coupled with the ketogenic diet.
In recent times there has been an exponential increase in the rates of obesity and diabetes. Popular opinion has blamed (in turn) overconsumption of fat, overconsumption of carbs and sugar and overconsumption of calories. Whilst the overall calorie balance is a crucial factor that cannot be overlooked, it is also the case that different macronutrients in the diet (especially carbs and fat) have different effects on the body when consumed.

I’m all for people eating in a way that is best for them. I did keto for several months and am transitioning to paleo. I know that different people have different needs. But really, eating pizza and cake made your bloating go away and you had more energy? I will have to give this a try, but I’m guessing you’re some type of magical creature on this one. 😂

Because the ketogenic diet alters the body's metabolism, it is a first-line therapy in children with certain congenital metabolic diseases such as pyruvate dehydrogenase (E1) deficiency and glucose transporter 1 deficiency syndrome,[34] which prevent the body from using carbohydrates as fuel, leading to a dependency on ketone bodies. The ketogenic diet is beneficial in treating the seizures and some other symptoms in these diseases and is an absolute indication.[35] On the other hand, it is absolutely contraindicated in the treatment of other diseases such as pyruvate carboxylase deficiency, porphyria and other rare genetic disorders of fat metabolism.[9] A person with a disorder of fatty acid oxidation is unable to metabolise fatty acids, which replace carbohydrates as the major energy source on the diet. On the ketogenic diet, their body would consume its own protein stores for fuel, leading to ketoacidosis, and eventually coma and death.[36]

Keto-adaptation, AKA “becoming a fat burning machine”, occurs when you have shifted your metabolism to relying on fat-based sources, instead of glucose (sugar) sources, as your primary source of fuel. Your body increases fat oxidation, and breaks down fats into ketones to be used as the primary energy source. Depending on your current level of carbohydrate intake (takes longer if you’re pretty sugar addicted), this process can take two weeks to six months to fully train your body to, but once done, it’s done, and you have achieved fat-burning status that can stick with you for life.

I have been on Keto for three months and have lost 30 lbs. I look at it as a lifestyle and not just a diet. I have far more energy, sleep better. have no sugar cravings and never feel hungry. My family doctor recommends Keto and I am currently attending a Keto Group session with another doctor who promotes Keto. I have never felt this good in years and I am 77. Doing some research I found the average American consumes 66 pounds of sugar a year. Here in Canada it is worse. We are consuming 88 lbs of sugar a year. How can this be healthy? If it is true that cancer cells feed only on sugar what better reason to eat a low carb diet. Sugar is killing us. Products are marketed with supposedly No Carbs and No sugar on their labels. What a joke. Look at the list of ingredients and look at the hidden sugars. There are at least 75 names for sugar. A few of the most popluar being dextrose, sucralose fructose,

O n e Y e a r : Thankful for the Gospel and it’s power to transform all areas of life. Only God’s grace allows me to look back one year ago (almost to the day) to reflect on how far He’s actually brought me and my family. Lots of “negative” circumstances took place over the course of the last year, but the perspective of the guy on the left is VASTLY different from the guy on the right. I truly believe there are no negative circumstances in this life, only misunderstandings of what’s actually good (dare I say, “best”) for us.
