Happy #transformationtuesday ! The picture on the left is from my college graduation. I was 21 years old and 264 lbs. It was taken the same month I started this weight loss journey. Today, I am 27 and weigh 151 lbs. Stating out, I knew nothing about keto! I did research and asked questions and has a lot of trial and error. If I can do this, anyone can! Keep pushing!! 😘😘
Normal body cells metabolize food nutrients and oxygen during cellular “respiration”,  a set of metabolic pathways in which ATP (adenosine triphosphate), our main cellular energy source is created. Most of this energy production happens in the mitochondria, tiny cell parts which act as powerhouses or fueling stations. There are two primary types of food-based fuel that our cells can use to produce energy:

A study with an intent-to-treat prospective design was published in 1998 by a team from the Johns Hopkins Hospital[19] and followed-up by a report published in 2001.[20] As with most studies of the ketogenic diet, there was no control group (patients who did not receive the treatment). The study enrolled 150 children. After three months, 83% of them were still on the diet, 26% had experienced a good reduction in seizures, 31% had had an excellent reduction and 3% were seizure-free.[Note 7] At twelve months, 55% were still on the diet, 23% had a good response, 20% had an excellent response and 7% were seizure-free. Those who had discontinued the diet by this stage did so because it was ineffective, too restrictive or due to illness, and most of those who remained were benefiting from it. The percentage of those still on the diet at two, three and four years was 39%, 20% and 12% respectively. During this period the most common reason for discontinuing the diet was because the children had become seizure-free or significantly better. At four years, 16% of the original 150 children had a good reduction in seizure frequency, 14% had an excellent reduction and 13% were seizure-free, though these figures include many who were no longer on the diet. Those remaining on the diet after this duration were typically not seizure-free but had had an excellent response.[20][21]
In reality, it is all about finding what works best for you and your lifestyle/goals. I am considered obese- weighing in at 240 Lbs. But even at this size, I can still run circles around my mother who is only 120. Skinny doesn’t always mean healthy. Quit being a slave to the scale and learn to enjoy life. Food is good (definitely ending on where you live). Enjoy it!

Came across this old pic yesterday and wanted to compare it to my recently uploaded pic. This was from when I was doing an all fruit / starch vegan diet. I also consumed gluten here and there.. thank God I got tested for food sensitivities or I would be in poor health still. Nothing against the vegan diet, but everyone’s body is different. People have had success with veganism and people who are insulin resistant haven’t. Hi Ben, I have a question about being in ketosis. So from what I understand, a serving of Keto os will keep you in ketosis for about 4-6 hours or so……my question is doesn’t your body have to be in constant ketosis in order to really experience the benefits of using the fat as fuel? Also, if someone is not following the Keto diet, what happens to the glucose they are still consuming if they are supposedly using ketones for energy? Also, do you see any benefit from using Keto os vs. Brain Octane? I ask because there is a significant difference in price. Thank you so much!!
The low glycaemic index treatment (LGIT)[48] is an attempt to achieve the stable blood glucose levels seen in children on the classic ketogenic diet while using a much less restrictive regimen. The hypothesis is that stable blood glucose may be one of the mechanisms of action involved in the ketogenic diet,[9] which occurs because the absorption of the limited carbohydrates is slowed by the high fat content.[5] Although it is also a high-fat diet (with approximately 60% calories from fat),[5] the LGIT allows more carbohydrate than either the classic ketogenic diet or the modified Atkins diet, approximately 40–60 g per day.[3] However, the types of carbohydrates consumed are restricted to those that have a glycaemic index lower than 50. Like the modified Atkins diet, the LGIT is initiated and maintained at outpatient clinics and does not require precise weighing of food or intensive dietitian support. Both are offered at most centres that run ketogenic diet programmes, and in some centres they are often the primary dietary therapy for adolescents.[9]
Now, I’m in low carb recovery, I need to re-lose some of what I’ve gained in the carb rebound, and to do it I’m just counting calories. I’m only 5’4, so I have a goal of 1620 per day, with the understanding that I am not going to hit that goal every day, because sometimes I will eat out or eat a donut that’s brought in at the office. I finally got tired of saying “I can’t have that” or lying and saying I didn’t even want it. Now, if I want to eat something, I eat it. I can adjust my other decisions for the day if necessary to accommodate a treat, or not, it just depends on how I feel. Some days I feel motivated to lose weight, and some days I feel motivated to eat ice cream, and the one desire does not have to destroy the other. I finally feel like I can enjoy the goodness of all of the food groups again, and I am steadily losing an average of 1 lb per week – no longer miserable.
Carbohydrate: Most of what determines how ketogenic a diet is will depend on how much carbohydrate is eaten, as well the individual's metabolism and activity level. A diet of less than 50 or 60 grams of net (effective) carbohydrate per day is generally ketogenic. Some sources say to consume no more than 20 grams of carbohydrates per day, while others cite up to 50 grams, and many recommend no more than 5 percent of calories from carbs. However, athletes and people with healthy metabolisms may be able to eat 100 or more grams of net carbohydrate in a day and maintain a desired level of ketosis. At the same time, an older sedentary person with Type 2 diabetes may have to eat less than 30 net grams to achieve the same level.
Whilst the diet is broadly acknowledged to be safe strategy where medications have failed, side effects such as kidney stones, hyperlipidemia and can occur47. Furthermore, maintaining dietary adherence in young school age children can be very challenging for caregivers. Exogenous ketones may be an alternative or a adjunct to the ketogenic diet in epilepsy. Early work suggests that exogenous ketones could have antiseizure effects. Injection of the ketones acetoacetate and acetone have been found to have anticonvulsant properties in animal models48, and an acetoacetate diester was found to protect against seizures in rats exposed to high levels of oxygen49. Further studies are required to understand specifically how ketone bodies affect seizure control, however for children who experience daily seizures a combination of the ketogenic diet and exogenous ketones could be helpful to manage their condition.

But, cautions Weiss, “If you have any medical condition, if you take any medicine at all – there are lots of things that change how medicines work in our bodies, and nutrition is definitely one of them. If you’re making a real change in your nutrition, you really should talk to your doctor.”
A systematic review in 2018 looked at sixteen studies on the ketogenic diet in adults. It concluded that the treatment was becoming more popular for that group of patients, that the efficacy in adults was similar to children, the side effects relatively mild. However, many patients gave up with the diet, for various reasons, and the quality of evidence inferior to studies on children. Health issues include high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high total cholesterol, and weight loss.[23]

It is worth noting that insulin sensitivity can be different between the different tissues of the body such as liver, adipose tissue and muscle. A small amount of insulin release can help to prevent development of DKA unless the body is totally insulin resistant. Insulin resistance is a term used to indicate that for a given amount of insulin, the cells of the body are less responsive and take up less glucose. This means that blood glucose levels remain higher for longer when insulin resistant Type II diabetics eat a carbohydrate rich meal. Over time, the pancreas secretes more insulin to compensate for reduced insulin sensitivity, which can damage the insulin producing (beta) cells. Furthermore, having high blood glucose can lead to a number of side effects:
THANK YOU! I’ve been doing Keto for 3 weeks and I don’t think this is the diet nor lifestyle for me. I’ve been having on and off Keto Flu that included painful headaches and constant bowel issues. I thought it would be over by the end of week 1, but I continued so I thought again at the end of week 2, but continued. It’s the end of week 3 and I’m not seeing any changes. I’m feeling just as tired if not more than when I wasn’t on Keto. My mood has been more snappy and aggressive than when I wasn’t on Keto. I just wasn’t happy. I already was super sensitive to salt & salty foods and now I’m even MORE sick of salt & salty foods. I missed my fruits and veggies like carrots which my pup & I often snacked on. I got super gassy and burped more these past 3 weeks than my entire life. My period was a mess and came 4 days earlier than normal and I haven’t had an odd period in over a year after getting diagnosed with mild PCOS. Attempting Keto really threw my body in for a loop and it’s been down hill ever since. I haven’t dropped in weight, the inches are still there, the bloating is still there. But now I have this fear of eating. I used to miss meals before and did IF for a while but now I miss even MORE meals and rarely eat which is just a recipe for weight gain when you’re consuming high fat. I’ve stocked my fridge with items I rarely ever bought: Sour Cream, Bacon, Cream Cheese, Heavy Whipping Cream. All because I needed to hit my fat macros.

Though I do appreciate your perspective based on your own experience which is very important and valid both to yourself and others, I would suggest that you state that your experience is only a personal one and that it isn’t a fact that this will be the experience for someone who’s body is in ketosis. I have personal experience with friends and family who have not only completely turned their lives around Healthwise but have reversed diabetes, cardiovascular disease and lost over 70 pounds which is a lot more than water weight, and have reversed some of the effects of a six-year-old epileptic girl who was told that she would have the symptoms she’s been experiencing for the rest of her life which have stopped at five months after following a ketogenic diet. I love hearing other peoples stories and experiences but it is important to acknowledge how cutting out complex carbohydrates and Sugars can really benefit a person’s mental state and their lives in general. Regardless of what nutritionist are saying in any part of the world if you watch a documentary called the magic pill it should open up your mind a bit on how following a meat , healthy fats and plant-based diet is what nature had always intended for human consumption and it’s people who have come in and created our food pyramid with what was being produced massively in order for people to make money which is wheat. The ketogenic diet tries to bring carbohydrates down to less than 5 percent of a person’s daily caloric intake – which means eliminating most grains, fruit, starchy vegetables, legumes and sweets. Instead, it replaces those calories with fat. That fat is turned into ketone bodies, which are an alternative energy source: besides glucose derived from carbohydrates, ketones from fat are the only fuel the brain can use.
The amount of carbs you can eat while staying in ketosis varies from person to person. If you’re following a strict ketogenic diet, your carb intake will be lower than if you’re following a cyclical ketogenic diet that includes intermittent fasting, like the Bulletproof Diet. Though keto carb calculators offer only a rough guide, they can be useful in figuring out where to start. Awesome… I am a newbie to this i took the keto os for 2 months for weight loss and did well. It a bit pricey. I try hard to conform to lchf diet daily but see no change other than I crave sweets. In 5’7 270 and stuck! My highest weight was 390 had gastric band put in 10 years ago but its just keep me from consumption of large amounts at on time. Is there a more economical way to stay in ketosis? I wAnt more energy… In not an exercise person usually have no energy. In willing to try other ideas.
For dinner, I stick to a spinach salad, topped with two hardboiled eggs, two pieces of bacon, an avocado, 4 oz. of chicken and some sunflowers seeds. I top it with ranch. I’ll have a couple fat bombs and some pecans. That’s very basic, but I don’t like to get too crazy with the meals. I’ll track all my meals the day before then I’ll prep it on Sunday and eat it for the rest of the week.

One more question about the LivingFuel SuperGreens…I had very bad GI issues with VEGA Protein in 2011 when I tried it (quit after half a container), which scared me away from the vegetarian proteins with greens in them. Is this drastically different from VEGA? Or seeing that pea is the primary source of protein should I look towards something else? Thanks again!
The fatty acids then flow into the bloodstream and are taken up by body tissues.  Once in the cells, the fatty acids are transported into the mitochondria of the cell to be metabolized carbon by carbon in a process called beta-oxidation. As glucose levels fall and fatty acid levels in the blood rise, the liver cells ramp up beta-oxidation which increases the amounts of a molecule called Acetyl-CoA. As the level of Acetyl-CoA rises, it is shunted to a process called ketogenesis. Ketogenesis generates a ketone body called acetoacetate first, and this ketone is then converted into the two other types of ketones: beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone.  Meanwhile, the glycerol part of the fat molecule gets converted into glucose in a process called gluconeogenesis, which means "make new sugar".

Finally, exogenous ketones have been shown to decrease the levels of triglycerides and free fatty acids in the blood after one drink 107 ,106 ,11. There is also early data showing that ketone ester consumption decreases cholesterol biosynthesis in rodents, an effect which appeared to be conserved in humans114. It is unclear at this stage what the long term effects of exogenous ketone consumption on blood lipids and cholesterol would be, but this is an area of promising research. 
Ketone esters (BHB-BD) lowers glycogen use30. During exercise, the muscle breaks down stored carbohydrate (glycogen) to provide a fuel for the working muscle. When a ketone ester drink was taken pre-workout, the muscle used far less glycogen compared to when the pre-workout drink contained carbohydrate. The high levels of blood ketones meant that the muscle used ketones as a fuel before needing to use glycogen. Reducing reliance on muscle glycogen could improve performance and decrease the time for muscle glycogen to fully recover between exercise bouts.

The ketogenic diet is amazing for losing weight and improving your health, so stick with it and don’t be afraid to make changes as needed. Track what you eat, stick within your keto macros, and test your ketone levels frequently to make sure you’re staying in ketosis. Most of all, give your body time to respond to the great changes you’re making for it.

It feels like everyone is talking about the keto diet — the high-fat, low-carb eating plan that promises to turn your body into a fat-burning machine. For that reason, keto has surged in popularity over the past year as a lose-weight-fast strategy. Thank Hollywood A-listers and professional athletes like Halle Berry, Adriana Lima, and Tim Tebow who’ve publicly touted the diet’s benefits, from shedding weight to slowing down aging. Here’s everything you need to know about going keto — and how to do it the Bulletproof way.
By now, you’ve likely heard about the ketogenic diet, the trendy weight-loss plan that calls for dramatically reducing how many carbs you eat, moderating your protein, and upping your fat intake. As a result of following the ketogenic diet, or keto for short, for a few days, your body will enter ketosis, a state that some research links to weight loss, better glucose control, and improved cholesterol. Not all health experts would recommend the diet, though, as it can lead to kidney stones, increased intake of “bad” fats, nutrient deficiencies, decreased bone density, and stomach problems, various research suggests.

Practically speaking, because it takes several days to raise blood ketone levels by following the ketogenic diet it has been virtually impossible to study the effects of ketosis on brain injury in humans. It is also complicated by the difficulty in quantifying the extent of the damage without repeated imaging and there is a lack of reliable biomarkers for concussion. Furthermore, concussions can’t be ‘administered’ to humans experimentally, making it impossible to study in a controlled setting. Therefore much of the proof of concept research looking a ketosis for concussion has been done in animals. Nevertheless, the results are promising: rats who were given a ketogenic diet or ketone precursors before67 and after68 a controlled concussive injury have were found to have improved brain energy metabolism, and improved cognitive and motor function post injury. Also, giving exogenous ketones as an injection post-injury protected the brain against glutamate induced excitotoxicity69 and alleviated the decrease in brain ATP that occurs due to the depression of glucose metabolism70. Therefore, as scientists’ ability to quantify concussion in humans improves, ketosis could be an interesting intervention to attempt to reduce the harmful after-effects.  
Ketone salts did not improve performance 35 ,36. There are two recent published studies of ketone salts on athletes.. Performance was compared between ketone salts vs. carbohydrate in a 4 minute cycling time trial and a 150 kJ ( ~10 mins) cycling time trial. In the 4 minute trial there was no change in performance, and in the 150 kJ test, performance was decreased by 7%. Reasons for the difference in findings could be: Lower levels of blood BHB levels (which peaked at 0.6 mM and 0.8 mM in these studies) meaning far less BHB was present than in the ketone ester study. The ketone salt was given without carbohydrate and so there was no additive effect of ketones + carbohydrate as seen in the ketone ester study. The tests used were short and highly reliant on anaerobic (glycolytic) metabolism, therefore ketones did not offer an advantage. 

In addition, most studies that compare carbohydrate utilization with fat utilization fail to take into account the fact that full “fat adaptation” that allows you to gain all the benefits of using fat as a fuel actually takes time – often more than four weeks – and up to a couple years. But since most studies that compare fat and carbohydrate burning are short-term, you rarely see the benefits of this kind of fat adaptation actually fleshed out in research. Instead, the average research participant begins the study in a non-fat adapted state, gets either a high fat or high carb diet, then launches into exercise. But in an ideal study, that person would have followed either a high-fat or high-carb diet for many months before getting their fat burning capability investigated.

Your glycogen stores can still be refilled while on a ketogenic diet. A keto diet is an excellent way to build muscle, but protein intake is crucial here. It’s suggested that if you are looking to gain mass, you should be taking in about 1.0 – 1.2g protein per lean pound of body mass. Putting muscle on may be slower on a ketogenic diet, but that’s because your total body fat is not increasing as much.5Note that in the beginning of a ketogenic diet, both endurance athletes and obese individuals see a physical performance for the first week of transition.
Furthermore, the participants who ate the low-carbohydrate diet lost an average of 0.8% body fat while those that ate the low-fat diet gained an average of 0.7% body fat. [18] This suggests that a higher fat diet may improve may lead to more favorable changes in body composition. Subjects in both groups notably reduced their waist circumference. [18] However, the reduction was greater for the low-carbohydrate group. [18]
Finally, an important consideration is the effect of the ketogenic diet on blood lipids. This is because the levels of various lipids in the blood have been shown to predict the likelihood of cardiovascular disease. Lipids and cholesterol are carried through the blood in biochemical assemblies called ‘lipoproteins,’ because they do not dissolve in water. There are two broad classes of lipoproteins in the blood: high density lipoprotein (HDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL). HDL is thought of as more ‘healthy’ (H = ‘Healthy’) because it responsible for moving cholesterol and lipids from the peripheral tissues into the liver for metabolism. LDL is demonised as bad cholesterol (L = ‘Lethal’), levels are elevated after a fatty meal and elevated LDL is associated with cholesterol build up in the arteries. 
That makes total sense for me too as I’m 65 and doing low carb the same way. My sugar and cholesterol are doing much better. Keeping the carbs lower stops me from going nuts on carbs later. I don’t consume so many fats as they recommend but enough to keep me happy. If I go out for a noodle bowl with friends I totally enjoy it and then get back on the wagon . Life is too short to get to obsessed about every macro. Never thought I could go without a potato every supper but here I am finding other great veggies to make up for it. Even have beans or a bit of fruit once in awhile just not too crazy with the helpings. I’m pretty proud of my self for sticking with this way of eating for over a year now. I feel better and that is what counts.
I was diagnosed in April with type 2 diabetes. I have learned A LOT about carbs and how they affect a diabetic’s blood sugar. They are the enemy! I looked at the Keto diet and adapted parts of it to my dietary needs. I try to limit my carb intake to 20 grams a day, far less than what the American Diabetes Association recommends. I experimented eating a variety of carbs like oatmeal, pasta, fresh fruits, yogurt and all spike my blood glucose readings well above 30 points. Learning what I have I think it’s prudent for anyone to manage their carb intake closely, especially if they are NOT physically active. Exercise has a huge in pact in reducing blood glucose. My goal is to manage my diabetes without drugs instead with diet and exercise.
“The Bulletproof Diet uses ketosis as a tool, but tweaks it for even better performance,” goes a blog post on the Bulletproof website. “It is a cyclical ketogenic diet, which means you eat keto for 5 to 6 days a week and then do a weekly protein fast, which lowers inflammation and kickstarts fat-burning. Day 6: When I thought back to what I ate today, I realized that between my salad and my lamb burger, I ate an entire avocado. The Keto360 plan recommends no more than half an avocado a day, and most nutritionists would probably agree. While the creamy, green fruit is filled with a lot of healthy fats, which I need in excess to stay in ketosis, at 300 calories a pop, that can quickly add up. (One gram of fat equals 9 calories, opposed to 4 calories per gram for both protein and carbs.)
For example, a key component of safe and lasting fat loss is your capability to tap into your body’s own storage fat for energy. This access to fat cannot happen if your body is constantly drawing on carbohydrate reserves and blood glucose for energy. In the type of moderate- to high-carbohydrate diets you’ve learned are widely recommended by prevailing nutrition science, not only does the utilization of fat for energy become far less crucial (since you’re constantly dumping readily available sugar sources into your body), but your metabolism never becomes efficient at using fat. There is a growing body of evidence proving that a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet results in faster and more permanent weight loss than a low-fat diet. Furthermore, appetite satiety and dietary satisfaction significantly improve with a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet that includes moderate protein.
The DNA test does not necessarily take into account your goals (e.g. breathholding, Ironman, cognition, etc.) and if your goals would benefit from ketosis, then you may want to choose it as a dietary strategy even though it could indeed be true that for FAT LOSS a higher carb intake may suit you. So it all depends on your goals. Or you could just us the supplements like ketones AND eat more carbs and get "best of both worlds".
The Johns Hopkins Hospital protocol for initiating the ketogenic diet has been widely adopted.[42] It involves a consultation with the patient and their caregivers and, later, a short hospital admission.[18] Because of the risk of complications during ketogenic diet initiation, most centres begin the diet under close medical supervision in the hospital.[9]

I never respond to anyone online, but I felt compelled to respond to this. First off, rice and corn are grains. I’ve found since doing the ketogenic diet, was that my g.i. issues disappeared. Something is happening with breads, certain fibers, and grains. Within 6 weeks, my severe abdominal pain and cramping and “D” went away. My heartburn and indigestion disappeared, and I no longer experience “slow digestion” (I have no other way to explain what I was feeling”. My IBS symptoms are gone. I was able to get off the antispasmodic drugs my doctor had me try. I feel this way of eating is going to have to be a permanent lifestyle change. I was able to lose 45 lbs in the first 8-10 months, bring my a1c down from 5.8 to 5.0. I’m absolutely a firm advocate for the keto way of eating. I’m not dissing on anyone who is against this way of eating, I’m just saying that my symptoms from the past 25 years, I believe were totally due to the poor diet I used to have. Pizza, cake, ice cream, cookies, chips, poptarts, crackers, tv dinners, corn, potatoes, rice, beans, pasta and breads….when I find myself wishing for those things, I think of how I used to feel. Also….I got severe “hemmies” when I had my children, and they stayed with me. Since I’ve been eating the “keto way”, I’ve not had any hemmorhoidal (sp) flare ups. I spoke with my doctor, he’s on board with this diet if it means no more pain, or “D” or “H”. Everyone is different. I just happened to stumble upon this way of eating purely for my a1c. I was pleasantly surprised when my health issues went away too. If anyone else reading this has G.I. troubles, speak with your doctor about this way of eating. What was right for me may not be right for you. I’ve been doing keto for 2 years now. The weight has stayed off, and my tummy troubles have been kept at bay. Thank you for letting me ramble!
Those issues are part of what's known as the “keto flu,” Warren says. Other side effects of the keto diet, all of which are tied to carb withdrawal, can include lightheadedness, nausea, mental fog, cramps, and headaches, in addition to the diarrhea and tiredness. Luckily, the keto flu doesn't usually last more than a week—which is coincidentally about when people start to see the number on the scale go down, says Warren.
"The keto diet is primarily used to help reduce the frequency of epileptic seizures in children. While it also has been tried for weight loss, only short-term results have been studied, and the results have been mixed. Ben, great article! I recently did my own ketosis experiment and didn’t catch the 100-200g advise until later than I should have, I’m guessing. Great results for 1-2 months but after 3 months I quit sleeping through the night and would wake after about 4 hours of rest each night. My guess is that the extra carbs at night coupled with iodine supplements should allow me to “have my cake and eat it too?” Any other suggestions on the sleep issue? I’ve gone back to High Fat/Low Carb, have improved sleep but I do miss nutritional ketosis and want to try again once my sleep is stable. Thank YOU!!!


Fairly recently, the diet was introduced as a weight-loss diet by an Italian professor of surgery, Dr. Gianfranco Cappello of Sapienza University in Rome. In his 2012 study, about 19,000 dieters received a high-fat liquid diet via a feeding tube inserted down the nose. The study showed an average weight loss of more than 20 pounds in participants, most of whom kept it off for at least a year. The researchers reported a few minor side effects, like fatigue.
It's worth noting that the review focused on low-carbohydrate diets, which are not always ketogenic. To be sure, there are balanced ways to adopt the ketogenic diet, and it can beneficial to some. In addition to its proven weight-loss effects that can be especially helpful for obese people, the diet is also a proven treatment for children with epilepsy. That's because the state of ketosis produces a natural chemical called decanoic acid, which can reduce seizures.

I’ve done a lot of soul searching this past year, and I actually thank keto for that. Because without it, I may not have reached this point in my life. The point where I care more about experiences rather than the food that goes in my mouth. The point where I love my body just as it is, no matter what size I am. The point where I wake up everyday and don’t worry about food, but rather look forward to being present in my life and my family’s lives.

I’m glad I came across this post. One of my friends was advised to do Keto by her doctor due to insulin resistance and was talking about how much weight she has lost in a very short time period and I thought maybe it would be worthwhile to try myself for at least a jumpstart to weight loss. The more I read about the diet, the more concerned I was that eating that much fat would be detrimental to me because my cholesterol is slightly higher than normal, my family has a history of heart disease, and I had my gallbladder removed two years ago. It seems that after reading this post, my concerns may have been warranted. I’m glad to see something to balance out all of the positive press that keto seems to be receiving these days and give an alternate point of view. I learned a long time ago not to be obsessed with diets for wt. loss. 3 weeks ago I reached a crisis with type II diabetes however and just knew I had to make drastic changes to get it under control. I found the keto diet to be the closest to an extreme decrease in carbs and decided to try it. I these 3 weeks my blood sugar has dropped from 175 to 300 down to 98 to 140. I’ve dropped my insulin from 4 short acting shots and one long acting each day to just the one long acting – and decreased that dose from 55 units to 30. Now I feel stuck on keto, but have the same issues with it that you speak of. Will be trying to tweak it as much as I can to satisfy tastes and convenience yet stay with better blood sugar control. Wt. loss would be nice, but not a main concern, lost 5 lbs so far, but may be just fluid as you say.

Medeiros et. al. have used patch-clamp electrophysiology to examine whether neurons in a specific specialized region known as the subfornical organ (SFO), an area where the blood-brain barrier is not present, are also glucose sensitive or not. Enter keto cycling. I found your post very interesting. Every body is different. First, every diet starts with losing that 5 pounds of water. Believe me, I have tried plenty of them. I started on keto over four years ago. After 7 months, I lost 60 pounds. I hadn’t felt so good and energetic in years. After 13 years on medication and insulin for type 2 diabetes, I am no longer taking medications. I am no longer as strict with myself as far as keto is concerned. I’m still low carb. I’ve gain 8 lbs. back, but I haven’t been able to exercise for the last 2 years. I’m hoping to start back soon. My son is getting married in May, so I’ll have to buckle down and lose that 8 plus a few more.
