The carbohydrate–insulin model predicts that the KD would lead to increased EE, thereby resulting in a metabolic advantage amounting to ~300–600 kcal/d. Our data do not support EE increases of that magnitude. (...) In summary, we found that a carefully controlled isocaloric KD coincided with small increases in EE that waned over time. A common belief among keto devotees is that your body not only switches to burning fat on keto but that a low-carb, high-fat diet turns you into a “fat-burning machine.” Now that you’re not eating pizza crust, your body is going to burn through all of its own fat, calories and laws of thermodynamics be damned. But you don’t magically burn off your love handles just because you changed your fuel source. As much as the three macronutrients have different uses in the bodies, when it comes to gaining and losing weight, calories are calories are calories.
2) I have a hard time eating real food soon after rides/workouts. I had used Hammer Recoverite (1scoop instead of suggest serving of 2 and add 1scoop whey isolate protein) in the past because I feel a significant difference the day after with less muscle fatigue. These are the widely recognized LCT’s, or long chain fatty acids in coconut oil, mostly saturated, including stearic acid (C18:0), oleic acid (C18:1), and linoleic acid (18:2). The exact percentage of each depends on region the coconut is grown, time of harvest, and other growing variables. They are good as a fuel source in your food, and have some of the tastiness of coconut oil, if your goal is getting into ketosis fast, you won’t benefit from eating a lot more of them compared to eating true medium chain fatty acids.

Thanks for sharing this information and your experience. I started Keto because I was having severe digestive issues where nearly everything seemed to make my tummy hurt. I saw that alot of the recipes and choices were gluten free since low carb, so I figured I’d try it and hopef5find some foods I COULD eat! I did strict for the first few weeks til I could see how it worked out and did find great relief in that there was nearly ZERO pain and bloating. Now I don’t do KETO, but I continue to substitute alot in the same manner… and I cook breads made with almond and coconut flour especially. I keep low sugar intake, but not nearly zero, and I try to keep within healthier carbs so no more pasta for instance, but maybe a little rice or sweet potatoes etc. I did start having hormone symptoms when doing strict keto and getting very tired also. I lost about 14 lbs right off then gained back about 5. I am starting to feel like I’m finding a good balance that works for me now, and I am thankful to have opened up some new nutrition ideas that my body seems to like better! I will say, I joined one fb group for KETOers, but found it to be very stressful as lots of snotty comments and attitudes… maybe isn’t that way in the entire KETO community, but was very off-putting! Parkinson’s disease (PD) is caused by death of neurons in a region of the brain called the ‘substantia nigra.’ As well as loss of neurons, those that survive accumulate misfolded proteins called “Lewy Bodies,” exhibit increased inflammation and impaired mitochondrial function. PD is most common in individuals over the age of 60 and is primarily characterised by poor control of movement (shaking, rigidity etc). Neuronal death leads to decreased levels of a neurotransmitter called dopamine, which is a key factor in the deterioration of motor function. Current treatments for PD centre on replacing dopamine using a drug called L-DOPA, which is a precursor to dopamine. This drug treats the symptoms of PD but not the underlying cause.
In 2014, a group of three Brazilian researchers assessed the available literature on low-carbohydrate diets in a meta-analysis. They specifically looked at trials that compared a very-low carbohydrate ketogenic diet (VLCKD) that contained no more than 50 grams of carbohydrates per day against a conventional, low-fat diet with less than 30% of calories from fat. Ultimately, they included 13 studies that lasted 12 months or more and collectively contained 1577 subjects with 787 randomized to a low-fat diet group and 790 to a VLCKD group.

Reasons for the difference in findings could be: this ketone ester drink was given along with a can of diet cola 30 mins before exercise and caused GI upset in many athletes. Delivering acetoacetate causes the muscle cells to become more ‘oxidised,’ which is a less favourable state for ATP production. Risk of some gastrointestinal upset with all ketone supplements. The dose, tonicity, time taken before competition and overall volume of a ketone drink will affect how easy it is to tolerate. Many athletes take ketone supplements without side effects, however there are differences between individuals, so practice with ketone supplements in training is advisable to ensure they don’t experience any GI side effects in competition. I was diagnosed in April with type 2 diabetes. I have learned A LOT about carbs and how they affect a diabetic’s blood sugar. They are the enemy! I looked at the Keto diet and adapted parts of it to my dietary needs. I try to limit my carb intake to 20 grams a day, far less than what the American Diabetes Association recommends. I experimented eating a variety of carbs like oatmeal, pasta, fresh fruits, yogurt and all spike my blood glucose readings well above 30 points. Learning what I have I think it’s prudent for anyone to manage their carb intake closely, especially if they are NOT physically active. Exercise has a huge in pact in reducing blood glucose. My goal is to manage my diabetes without drugs instead with diet and exercise.

I love your site but your note about Diabetic Ketoacidosis is completely wrong. DKA is not something that happens because your body produces too many ketones. It is something that happens when your body produces too many ketones, and you don’t have any insulin in your system. As long as a Type 1 Diabetic takes insulin they will NOT go into DKA. Especially since DKA requires high ketones, high sugars, and low insulin.
In the US especially, coconut oil and MCT oil manufacturers are legally allowed to claim that lauric acid is an MCT because chemists named it that way, even though it does not act like other true biological MCT oils. If you are relying on plain coconut oil or “MCT-labeled” oil to get enough useful MCTs, think again and check the label: odds are you’re getting very few of the potent, ketogenic shorter chain MCTs (also known as “C8” and “C10”), and instead getting mostly cheaper but ineffective lauric acid.
People use a ketogenic diet most often to lose weight, but it can help manage certain medical conditions, like epilepsy, too.
