I enjoyed this article. My whole family has been on keto for a few months now. My husband started earlier that we did. We all enjoy this way of eating. But I do believe that Keto is not for everyone. I have type 2 diabetes and my doc actually recommends this way of eating and she also practices it. We are not strict and we have all lost weight and are feeling better. But with that being said if I want to eat a few French fries or take a bit of my bun from my burger I do. And when my daughters bday comes up soon I will have cake and I’m gonna eat a piece and enjoy every bite.

I have read your article and lots of other stuff on Keto, but I still don’t understand why it has to be so high in fat? I am on a calorie controlled diet which should also be pushing me into ketosis (Optifast + veges) nutritionist suggestion to go hard for a month. But after that was looking at moving to a Ketogenic diet. I am just having a hard time with understanding why it has to be high fat. Can you help me understand? Next, you need to ease yourself into this stuff. As I mentioned earlier, KETO//OS is blended with MCT’s, which can cause digestive distress if you’re not used to consuming them. This is due to the fact that your body has not yet adapted to the increased fats in your diet, and is less efficient at utilizing ketones as its fuel source. Once your body has adapted to MCT in the diet, the digestive distress will resolve.  But I recommend you start slowly with just about a half a serving a day, and over two weeks, build up to a full serving twice a day.
I’ve not been extremely diligent on tracking my calories, carbohydrates and macros. I’m a pretty accurate ball park guesser though.😬 I resist eating anything that is not keto friendly. I count carbs in my mind and try to stay below 20 grams a day. I carefully ballpark my calories per day keeping around 1400 to 1700. I walk 4 to 5 miles every single day,no matter what. I only drink water and black coffee, nothing else. I NEVER snack. I eat twice per day starting at high noon and eat my dinner/final meal sometime between 6:00 or 8:00pm. Which makes my intermittent fasting 16/18 - 6/8. I’ve tested my blood for ketosis a few times and about half of the time I’m in ketosis... but rarely does a week go by that I don’t lose some weight, so I’ve quit testing for ketosis.
Protein: When people first reduce carbohydrates in their diets, it doesn't seem as though the amount of protein they eat is as important to ketosis as it often becomes later on. For example, people on the Atkins diet often eat fairly large amounts of protein in the early stages and remain in ketosis. However, over time, some (perhaps most) people need to be more careful about the amount of protein they eat as (anecdotally) the bodies of many people seem to "get better" at converting protein into glucose (gluconeogenesis). At that point, each individual needs to experiment to see if too much protein is throwing them out of ketosis and adjust as necessary.
I loved this post, thank you. I tried KETO for 1 day only and I felt terrible. It just wasn’t worth it to me to feel like shit even for one day and I knew I had to study a lot at the time, so I decided that keto is just not for me. But at the same time I felt bad for feeling this way, like something was wrong with me, because I couldn’t even follow a diet, that many people say it’s very easy to follow. And now I just accepted the fact that I love carbs too much to give them up (especially fruit).
At the beginning of the year I was counting calories, I was losing weight but I was eating the same thing....every day....never deviating. I lasted 4 months. The lowest I ever hit was 325, starting from 347. I mean that is not bad, and I was losing weight, but I was so bored with my food. Since starting Keto, I am already down to 328 IN TWO WEEKS. THANK YOU! I’ve been doing Keto for 3 weeks and I don’t think this is the diet nor lifestyle for me. I’ve been having on and off Keto Flu that included painful headaches and constant bowel issues. I thought it would be over by the end of week 1, but I continued so I thought again at the end of week 2, but continued. It’s the end of week 3 and I’m not seeing any changes. I’m feeling just as tired if not more than when I wasn’t on Keto. My mood has been more snappy and aggressive than when I wasn’t on Keto. I just wasn’t happy. I already was super sensitive to salt & salty foods and now I’m even MORE sick of salt & salty foods. I missed my fruits and veggies like carrots which my pup & I often snacked on. I got super gassy and burped more these past 3 weeks than my entire life. My period was a mess and came 4 days earlier than normal and I haven’t had an odd period in over a year after getting diagnosed with mild PCOS. Attempting Keto really threw my body in for a loop and it’s been down hill ever since. I haven’t dropped in weight, the inches are still there, the bloating is still there. But now I have this fear of eating. I used to miss meals before and did IF for a while but now I miss even MORE meals and rarely eat which is just a recipe for weight gain when you’re consuming high fat. I’ve stocked my fridge with items I rarely ever bought: Sour Cream, Bacon, Cream Cheese, Heavy Whipping Cream. All because I needed to hit my fat macros.
My question is, does the benefit to using KetoCaNa only extend to significant decreases in oxygen demand/ increases in physical performance/ heightened mental acuity/cognitive performance.? Of course, these are all great benefits, but if I were to use KetoCaNa as a pre-workout, is it going to impair my endogenous ketone production? I usually train fasted with a strong black coffee and L-Carnitine.

Six months ago I went to the doctors office for the wake up call of my life. I was almost 300 pounds, I was showing signs of prediabetes, and early fatty liver. I was absolutely shocked and horrified with myself that I let my weight and health spiral so far out of control. But hearing all of those health problems and seeing that number gave me the motivation I needed to really try and change myself. I went six months of keto and cardio without cheating once and here I am now.
I have been doing keto for about a month and although I have lost about 8 lbs I am finding the constipation to be more frequent. I have started to add more fiber back into my diet. I do think however that Keto has helped me jumpstart me in avoiding sugar and getting away from eating bread and pastas. I hope to continue by limiting my calories, monitoring the carbs and reducing some of the fats. My hope is to continue to eat healthy and add back some of those foods not suggested while on keto.

Problem is you referred Keto as a Diet and not a lifestyle that you choose to live bye. When you relax and just eat a ketogenic lifestyle for an extended period of time meaning at least 4 months or more you don’t need to count everything so closely as you did and really when I look at my fellow co workers and kids that my children go to school with it’s easy to see how that slice of bread, bowl of pasta and piece of cake is destroying American Health.

You could pick any of the countless diet books on the market, follow their plan to the last calorie, and lose weight. This is because — as study after study has shown — calories and dietary adherence matter more than anything for weight loss. You can gain or lose weight on any combination of foods. But sadly, whether due to government subsidy of high carb foods like corn and grain, funding from big companies like Gatorade and Powerbar, our sugar-addicted Western palates, or the constant (unfounded) fear mongering about saturated fats and heart disease, the type of research that shows these fat-burning and performance benefits of carbohydrate restriction simply get shoved under the rug.
Starting off with it, but with the ~ 50g carbs/day. I’ve been using MyFitnessPal to track, using some advice from ketovale and others to set the targets in the service to help. Only been doing it for ~ 10 days, but down about 8 pounds so far. My biggest problem – need more veggies in my diet and that’s a bit tougher. Working on that with salads and such. I also need to purge out the older salad dressings made w/ vegetable oils and such, but getting there. So – not fully into Keto, but working towards that. I’ve definitely found that I can eat quite a few foods I actually like so that’s not a huge downside. Do I miss pizza/pasta/tortillas? Sometimes. But there are keto pizza crusts (of a sort) and spaghetti squash works really well for me to replace pasta. I have yet to try a “zucchini” wrapped enchilada, but I think that might work as well.

Clinical trials of various ketogenic agents have shown promising outcomes in AD. Recently, a case report was published describing a dramatic improvement in cognitive function in a patient consuming daily drinks of a ketone ester of beta-hydroxybutyrate-butanediol54. This corroborates evidence from animal studies of AD, which showed behavioural and anatomical improvements in AD mice treated with the same ketone ester55. Also, medical foods containing medium chain triglycerides can give an acute improvement in cognitive scores in AD patients 56 ,57. The effectiveness of this treatment was found to depend on the absence of a gene variant that has been associated to increased chance of AD, called APOE4. Finally, following a ketogenic diet for 6 weeks improved the symptoms of mild cognitive impairment58. It is still early days, but the use of ketogenic diets and exogenous ketones may help to improve the quality of life of patients with dementia and their caregivers.             
I do need to lose weight, but I have ALWAYS been the biggest Keto nay-sayer. It defied everything I believe in. What turned the tables for me after a lot of research is that it's supposed to help with infertility and at this point, I'm desperate and will try anything. So, I gave it 30 days and said I would re-evaluate whether I want to continue. And let me tell you, I want to continue. This is what it's done for me so far:

Now I though about taking keto supplement to boost my ketosis (I’m also looking to boost my overall electrolyte and vitamin/mineral). I’m unsure what product to take. Should I take keto os or ketocana (or else)? Should I take it in the morning while I’m empty stomack for the next 6 hours (wake up at 5) with my mg cap so I get a boost in electrolyte and keto in the morning? Should I take more? Depending on the set, I might not have to take mg cap anymore since they all include some in it.
I started Keto 6 months ago and my physical and mental health has never been better. I used to suffer pretty bad mood swings.They are now gone. Bloating has completely gone. Low energy has gone. I have lost lots of weight and people tell me I look younger. My skin glows and my hair shines. I genuinely feel amazing and this is most certainly not a fad diet. This is for life. I wouldn’t dream of going back to eating rice and pasta. There are so many interesting alternative to carbs and some great recipes now online that food and cooking has become really exciting and experimental. I make great Keto ice cream. The first 2 weeks were awful yes, it’s called Keto flu. It’s your body adjusting to being a fat burner as opposed to a sugar burner. Then WOW did I feel good. It’s completely changed my life and my relationship with other people. My kids have told me they love the new “calmer” me and are much happier. I would urge anyone to really try this lifestyle choice and give it at least 6 months, experiment with recipes. Caulirice fried in butter with some chicken stock and garlic is a delicious alternative to rice. Have your bacon and eggs for breakfast with some almond bread smothered in salty butter and a cup of coffee with cream. Have fun learning about Keto cookery. You will be amazed at some of the wonderful recipes out there. Crabs were definitely detrimental to my health in a big way, particularly my mental health. For the first time in my life I feel happy. I’m 50 yrs old.

In the beginning of the study, all participants were instructed to consume either ≤20 g of fat (if in the low-fat group) or ≤20 g of carbs (if in the low-carb group) for the first two months, after which they could increase either their fat or carb intake to levels they felt they could sustain indefinitely. By the end of the trial, the vast majority had not been able to maintain such low levels. The final dietary recalls reported an average daily fat intake of ≈57 g (low-fat group) and an average daily carb intake of ≈132 g (low-carb group).

Ketolysis is the process of breaking down ketones to ultimately provide energy through the Krebs Cycle and mitochondrial oxidative (using oxygen) phosphorylation. Ketone bodies are broken down in the mitochondria of virtually all tissues in the body. The liver is a notable exception, being unable to utilise ketones as a fuel because liver cells lack acetyl-CoA thiolase, a key enzyme in the ketone oxidative pathway. BHB enters the mitochondria of the cell through a monocarboxylate transporter, undergoes conversion to acetoacetate by BHB dehydrogenase and then addition of a CoA group from succinyl-CoA by 3-oxo-acid transferase. The resulting acetoacetyl-CoA acts a substrate for the formation of two molecules of acetyl-CoA in a reaction catalysed by acetyl-CoA thiolase. Acetyl-CoA is then available to condense with oxaloacetate and enter the Krebs cycle.
Wow! Amazing article. I don’t read blogs regularly, but I’ll be reading more of yours. I am on day 11 of a fast to get me into ketosis; 7 days bone broth and now on day-4 water only. Intentions are weight loss (10# down, 15# more to go) and immunity improvement/gut help. Planning 9 days of whey water, fermented veggies and mad probiotics when the water days are done (day 14?). After this fast I want to stay fat adapted, start training again and get down to 8% body fat. I believe you have cut that journey significantly with this article. Thank you.
Ketone esters (BHB-BD) lowers glycogen use30. During exercise, the muscle breaks down stored carbohydrate (glycogen) to provide a fuel for the working muscle. When a ketone ester drink was taken pre-workout, the muscle used far less glycogen compared to when the pre-workout drink contained carbohydrate. The high levels of blood ketones meant that the muscle used ketones as a fuel before needing to use glycogen. Reducing reliance on muscle glycogen could improve performance and decrease the time for muscle glycogen to fully recover between exercise bouts.
Ketone breath meters: The breath test method, where you blow into a meter, measures acetone levels in the breath. Acetones are one of three types of water-soluble ketone molecules; and in this type of test, the more you have, the farther you are into ketosis.  Breath meters are more accurate than urine strips in determining whether you’re in ketosis or not.

When you eat foods high in carbohydrates and fat, your body naturally produces glucose. Carbohydrates are the easiest thing for the body to process, and therefore it will use them first – resulting in the excess fats to be stored immediately. In turn, this causes weight gain and health problems that are associated with high fat, high carbohydrate diets (NOT keto).

Concussion (a mild form of TBI), is defined as a short term impairment of brain function caused by impact. Symptoms include dizziness, confusion and headache. When the brain suffers a concussive impact this triggers an acute cascade of cellular events that can eventually cause chronic problems. Firstly, immediately after impact there are changes to the concentrations of ions and neurotransmitters in and outside of the neurones. For example, the cells release potassium and glutamate (excitatory neurotransmitter); this can cause neuronal damage instantly64. The disruption to the equilibrium of substances within the brain must be corrected, which requires the action of the ATP dependant ion pumps in the cell membranes. In order to produce enough ATP the brain has a transient period of high glucose metabolism (within 30 minutes of impact), which is followed by a period of glucose metabolic depression that can last anywhere from 5 days to several months, depending on severity65. In this time the brain is starved of energy when it is unable to metabolise glucose, which can cause long term damage. Severe or repeated impacts can lead to development of conditions such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). 
3) Cholesterol levels usually go up with inflammation, because inflammation causes damage to the tissues, and cholesterol is manufactured and released in circulation to patch things up. So, again, eating high fat is the best way to drop inflammation; not increase it. My hsCRP are always below 0.1, and most of the time, below detection level. Oxidation of cholesterol causes inflammation; not the other way around. So, your point about inflammation is a non-issue.
I’m missing one key-step in this whole process … I understand (vaguely) how to get into ketosis via diet, starvation, or supplementation. But, my confusion really is with the supplementation method (such as XCT Oil, for example). Conklin's fasting therapy was adopted by neurologists in mainstream practice. In 1916, a Dr McMurray wrote to the New York Medical Journal claiming to have successfully treated epilepsy patients with a fast, followed by a starch- and sugar-free diet, since 1912. In 1921, prominent endocrinologist H. Rawle Geyelin reported his experiences to the American Medical Association convention. He had seen Conklin's success first-hand and had attempted to reproduce the results in 36 of his own patients. He achieved similar results despite only having studied the patients for a short time. Further studies in the 1920s indicated that seizures generally returned after the fast. Charles Howland, the parent of one of Conklin's successful patients and a wealthy New York corporate lawyer, gave his brother John a gift of $5,000 to study "the ketosis of starvation". As professor of paediatrics at Johns Hopkins Hospital, John Howland used the money to fund research undertaken by neurologist Stanley Cobb and his assistant William G. Lennox.[10]

No and yes. The liver can make ketones out of alcohol, so technically, when you drink you'll continue to produce ketones and so will remain in ketosis. The problem is ... alcohol converts more easily to ketones than fatty acids, so your liver will use the alcohol first, in preference to fat. Thus, when you drink, basically your FAT burning is put on hold until all the alcohol is out of your system.

I’ve been doing keto for a month now. Cheated on Sunday to hopefully reboot this diet because I’ve only lost 3lbs. I’ve been within my carbs and doing everything right. Somehow just not loosing weight. I’ve lost 50lbs before just eating healthier so I don’t understand why this isn’t working for me? If anyone has any advice it would be helpful, I’m trying to stick this out for my mom so she stays healthy but it suck not loosing. I’m 26 and 219lbs so I have plenty of fat to loose.
