But the biggest reason that people lose weight quickly when they start keto isn’t because of what I’ve mentioned above, it’s because of a loss of water weight. One of the concerns with the keto diet is the loss of muscle mass and the depletion of glycogen stores. For some, ketosis can cause more negative than positive side effects. Enter the Internet. I tried a bunch of things… ordered this powder and that “organic concoction,” etc… nothing… I’m the cook in the family and my love for food has reared its beautiful head again. So in the spirit of finding a balance and battling my own obsessive issues, I eventually found a tea online that’s touted as a “detox” tea but I wouldn’t really call it that. I would describe it as doing the same thing for my obsessions that, say, chamomile tea does for relaxation. It literally “relaxes” my obsessions an mental “food shackles.” Yes, everything about it feels “salesy,” but I’ve tried literally a ton of these things and this one has had an extremely positive effect on my cravings to the point where I finally feel like I’m in control of my “food brain” again. I started my journey on April’s Fools this year and it’s been a hell of a six months! Was a mix of lazy and strict Keto - tailored my meals to strictly fish, chicken, eggs, and cauliflowers/broccoli. On the days I could not prepare my meals, I went with rotisserie chicken. One whole chicken and my food intake was done for the day. Yes it’s does not meet my daily requirements but I try my best on such days. I cut beer out completely and rarely ate out. I was a sugar addict and I would drink a couple of iced coffee with sugar and milk before - it was the hardest change to make. I still buy it weekly - one sip and I throw the rest away. Just to sort out my urges haha!
Thorne Research has decided to discontinue their Glycofuse product, right when I started using it! Current inventory is expected to run out in June or July. I contacted them to ask if it was being replaced with a new product and at this time they are not able to answer that question, and suggested checking back in with them in June/July. Short of stocking up on a case of it, do you have another recommended product that is as clean & functional as the Glycofuse? I have been on Keto for three months and have lost 30 lbs. I look at it as a lifestyle and not just a diet. I have far more energy, sleep better. have no sugar cravings and never feel hungry. My family doctor recommends Keto and I am currently attending a Keto Group session with another doctor who promotes Keto. I have never felt this good in years and I am 77. Doing some research I found the average American consumes 66 pounds of sugar a year. Here in Canada it is worse. We are consuming 88 lbs of sugar a year. How can this be healthy? But I did NOT love being constipated despite plenty of fibrous leafy greens and increased water consumption. As a nurse I know how important regular bowel function is and as I just couldn’t get around this one I have decided to loosen up a bit and follow the CSIRO low carb guidelines which allow a bit more carb, less fat and is way more bowel friendly. Hoping that it doesn’t affect those ghrelin levels too much.

I never respond to anyone online, but I felt compelled to respond to this. First off, rice and corn are grains. I’ve found since doing the ketogenic diet, was that my g.i. issues disappeared. Something is happening with breads, certain fibers, and grains. Within 6 weeks, my severe abdominal pain and cramping and “D” went away. My heartburn and indigestion disappeared, and I no longer experience “slow digestion” (I have no other way to explain what I was feeling”. My IBS symptoms are gone. I was able to get off the antispasmodic drugs my doctor had me try. I feel this way of eating is going to have to be a permanent lifestyle change. I was able to lose 45 lbs in the first 8-10 months, bring my a1c down from 5.8 to 5.0. I’m absolutely a firm advocate for the keto way of eating. I’m not dissing on anyone who is against this way of eating, I’m just saying that my symptoms from the past 25 years, I believe were totally due to the poor diet I used to have. Pizza, cake, ice cream, cookies, chips, poptarts, crackers, tv dinners, corn, potatoes, rice, beans, pasta and breads….when I find myself wishing for those things, I think of how I used to feel. Also….I got severe “hemmies” when I had my children, and they stayed with me. Since I’ve been eating the “keto way”, I’ve not had any hemmorhoidal (sp) flare ups. I spoke with my doctor, he’s on board with this diet if it means no more pain, or “D” or “H”. Everyone is different. I just happened to stumble upon this way of eating purely for my a1c. I was pleasantly surprised when my health issues went away too. If anyone else reading this has G.I. troubles, speak with your doctor about this way of eating. Armed with the 411 on how the keto diet works, I felt encouraged and relieved. The concept is rooted in nutrition- and weight-loss science. And from my initial conversations with Dr. Axe, I liked knowing that ketogenic diet results are always meant to be time-bound—eating this way is not a lifestyle and that makes sense. Ketone esters (BHB-BD) could help to accelerate glycogen resynthesis32. After exercise that depletes muscle glycogen, the muscle uses carbohydrate from the diet to replenish these stores. An experiment was carried out where athletes undertook depletive exercise and then were given a ketone drink (or carbohydrate placebo) as well as glucose intravenously to maintain a high blood level (10mM). In this experiment, when the recovery drink contained ketone ester, more glucose was infused in order to maintain blood glucose at 10 mM, and muscle glycogen levels were 50% higher. However, the evidence is not conclusive: another study. 31 found that adding ketone ester to a protein and carbohydrate recovery drink did not enhance the normal rate of glycogen re-synthesis.  
Reduced hunger. Many people experience a marked reduction in hunger on a keto diet. This may be caused by an increased ability of the body to be fueled by its fat stores. Many people feel great when they eat just once or twice a day, automatically ending up doing a form of intermittent fasting. This saves both time and money, while also speeding up weight loss.

If I see a TSH above 2.0 or a trend towards higher values in someone who is testing repeatedly, I get worried – and prefer to see TSH at 0.5-2.0. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you begin to shove carbohydrates indiscriminately down the hatch. However, it means that your high-fat, low-carb diet should include thyroid supporting foods rich in iodine and selenium, such as sea vegetables and brazil nuts, and should also include carbohydrates timed properly, such as before, during or after workouts, when the carbohydrate is more likely to be utilized for energy and less likely to spike blood glucose levels.

Experts are split on whether the keto diet is a good idea. On the one hand, Lori Chang, registered dietitian and a supervisor at the Center for Healthy Living at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles, says using a “cleaner” source of energy—ketones rather than quick-burning carbohydrates—can improve mood and energy levels. When you eat refined carbohydrates or just too many carbs in general, the blood is flooded with excess insulin, Chang says. "This can lead to a blood sugar rollercoaster that stresses the body and negatively impacts energy levels and mood. When you’re in a state of ketosis, however, ketone bodies don’t require insulin to cross the blood-brain barrier, which wards off unfavorable blood sugar levels."
But what does the science say? Results are mixed. In one Spanish study of 20 obese adults, participants were put on a low-calorie keto diet and lost an average of 40 pounds over four months. Another small experiment had a similar outcome. In a six-month Experimental & Clinical Cardiology study of 83 obese adults, those on the keto diet lost an average of 33 pounds, while lowering their bad (LDL) cholesterol levels and increasing their good (HDL) cholesterol.
At the same time, you need to remember to increase the amount of fat that you eat. Also, it doesn’t mean a complete ban on carbs. You just need to reduce the amount that you eat to 15g or less per day. On average, we tend to eat around a third to a half more than that on a daily basis. Reducing carbs won’t be easy for some, which is why having delicious recipes to try first is the way to go.

Transformation Tuesday::: I wore shorts once last year, i felt good because they were a size 16 I think, down from a size 20. My size 2 shorts in the after picture are now too big. About a year between these pictures and at least 100lbs. I was working out, but @coach_jmo had just had the food conversation with me. It was vacation time and I was sad about not being beach ready in a little over 3 months. 😂 I was still making bad choices to help me cope with my weight gain from Postpartum depression and anxiety. I was still eating horribly, with cheat weekends and lots of pizza. 😂 I still thought exercising was enough to help me reach my goals. Working out 7 days a week with my trainer and a Ketogenic diet have changed my life. Down from a size 18/20 to a Size 0/2, over 130 pounds, and over 115 inches. 🎉🙌🎊
