Minerals/Electrolytes: Adopting a ketogenic diet will change the way your body uses (and loses) certain minerals. As a matter of fact, it’s more dangerous to have high levels of cholesterol and high levels of CRP than low levels of cholesterol and high levels of CRP – even if your high levels of cholesterol are “healthy”, big fluffy LDL particles, and not small, dense vLDL particles. In other words, no matter how many healthy fats you’re eating, these fats may actually come back to bite you if you’re creating high inflammation from too much exercise, not enough sleep, exposure to toxins and pollutants, or a high-stress lifestyle.
Sometimes it does get hard, sometimes you may want to cheat, and sometimes you do. I've done it. But remember your end goal - for me that is around 30 pounds to go, for you it may be to get stronger, or lose X amount of weight, etc., and get back on the horse if you fall down! I have changed to a Ketogenic Lifestyle for over a year and half now. This is not a Diet is a lifestyle change. I choose to be healthy and weight loss is an awesome side effect. I’m over 100lb down, no more diabetes, I reversed my fatty liver disease, and I am totally off all blood pressure medication. I have more energy and now able to work out 5 days a week. My blood work had never been better including my cholesterol levels. I’ve tried every diet and nothing worked. I respect your opinion and your post on the blog, but Keto has been a lifesaver for not only me but my family as well. I wish you well in your journey and I’m glad you found a WOE that works for you. As I learned in a University of Connecticut lab experiment I mentioned earlier in this article (gory details here), a high-fat, low-carb diet can teach and allow the muscles to tap into more fat for fuel, making your body crave less use of oxygen in the large muscles of the legs, arms or other areas that you’ve learned oxygen gets shunted away from when deep underwater.

I never respond to anyone online, but I felt compelled to respond to this. First off, rice and corn are grains. I’ve found since doing the ketogenic diet, was that my g.i. issues disappeared. Something is happening with breads, certain fibers, and grains. Within 6 weeks, my severe abdominal pain and cramping and “D” went away. My heartburn and indigestion disappeared, and I no longer experience “slow digestion” (I have no other way to explain what I was feeling”. My IBS symptoms are gone. I was able to get off the antispasmodic drugs my doctor had me try. I feel this way of eating is going to have to be a permanent lifestyle change. I was able to lose 45 lbs in the first 8-10 months, bring my a1c down from 5.8 to 5.0. I’m absolutely a firm advocate for the keto way of eating. I’m not dissing on anyone who is against this way of eating, I’m just saying that my symptoms from the past 25 years, I believe were totally due to the poor diet I used to have. Pizza, cake, ice cream, cookies, chips, poptarts, crackers, tv dinners, corn, potatoes, rice, beans, pasta and breads….when I find myself wishing for those things, I think of how I used to feel. Also….I got severe “hemmies” when I had my children, and they stayed with me. Since I’ve been eating the “keto way”, I’ve not had any hemmorhoidal (sp) flare ups. I spoke with my doctor, he’s on board with this diet if it means no more pain, or “D” or “H”. Everyone is different. I just happened to stumble upon this way of eating purely for my a1c. I was pleasantly surprised when my health issues went away too. If anyone else reading this has G.I. troubles, speak with your doctor about this way of eating. The popular low-carb diets (such as Atkins or Paleo) modify a true keto diet. But they come with the same risks if you overdo it on fats and proteins and lay off the carbs. So why do people follow the diets? "They're everywhere, and people hear anecdotally that they work," McManus says. Theories about short-term low-carb diet success include lower appetite because fat burns slower than carbs. "But again, we don't know about the long term," she says. "And eating a restrictive diet, no matter what the plan, is difficult to sustain. Once you resume a normal diet, the weight will likely return."

Consume more beef and high-fat dairy. These keto foods contain high amounts of a fatty acid called Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA). CLA has been found to improve fat loss by a variety of different mechanisms. To get as much CLA as possible, source your dairy and beef from 100% grass-fed cows. CLA content is 300-500% higher in beef and dairy from grass-fed cows, compared to grain-fed cows.


One hypothesised contributor to neuronal death is insufficient energy production, secondary to impaired mitochondrial function. However, it is unclear if this is in fact a cause or effect of PD. Whatever the case may be, patients with PD have been shown to have impaired mitochondrial energy production in the brain59 and lower brain glucose utilisation60. Another factor may be neuro-inflammation, which is also common in PD, and is thought to lead to further accumulation of Lewy Bodies and neuronal death.

Keeping the body in ketosis for extended periods of time may lead to weight loss, according to a study published in Experimental & Critical Cardiology. I have never been able to fix the electrolyte loss symptoms I get on the ketogenic diet (heart palpitations, dry mouth, air hunger) by supplementing with electrolytes. Blogosphere says that is just the transition, but mine seem to only get worse over time. I’ve tried about 2 grams of extra potassium, 800 mg extra magnesium, and 3 grams extra salt (in addition to my already liberally salted foods) spread throughout the day. This did not help. Also does eating salt alone cause you to retain water and therefore retain the rest of the electrolytes without supplementing them?

I am not an athlete. I am a mid 30’s male with a sedentary lifestyle. I am 5’10” and 250lbs. I have mild hypertension, high triglycerides, and pre-diabetes. I have eaten whatever I want and as much as I want for years. I have recently started walking/jogging 3-4 times a week, taking fish oil, and eating significantly less carbs plus added fish and steak. Is this diet appropriate and safe for me?

I don’t agree with this article completely. I’ve been Keto for a year and half and have kept off the 45 lbs I’ve lost. I’ve gained more muscle mass by lifting and take mineral supplements which I needed before as well. I’ve not purchased and if the Keto “stuff” everyone seems to be selling these days. I still love this way of eating since my intestinal issues after gone and I’m feeling great. It may seem like a fad and with that reach person needs to research very careful to what is healthy and what is not.

Thorne Research has decided to discontinue their Glycofuse product, right when I started using it! Current inventory is expected to run out in June or July. I contacted them to ask if it was being replaced with a new product and at this time they are not able to answer that question, and suggested checking back in with them in June/July. Short of stocking up on a case of it, do you have another recommended product that is as clean & functional as the Glycofuse? This recipe in the blog post above has been working great for me this last month. I’m bummed I’m already going to have to switch it up again!
My doctor recommended a keto diet for me despite me having an eating disorder and being vegan. It has been so difficult to try to follow that it has made everything worse. My eating disorder is worse, my depression is worse, my anxiety around food is through the roof. I am so glad I found your article because it’s been so hard finding anything anti-keto! I needed to read that it was driving other people crazy too and was dangerous, so thank you. I am slowly reintegrating carbs but i do believe a lot of damage has been done in regards to my psychological health that it will take a long time to recover from this “diet”.
Our body’s main source (and preferred source) of fuel is glucose, aka, carbs. We get energy from glucose to go about our daily activities. However, when glucose gets depleted from our body, either from cutting out carbs or not eating for a long period of time, our body looks for other sources of energy. When we decrease carbs to the point of having very little glucose being available, our insulin levels drop and fat is released from our cells. Our liver then turns this fat into ketones, our body’s second choice for energy.
In other words, I personally found that while following “strict ketosis”, things became eerily similar to the days in college when I was a competitive bodybuilder pursuing sub-3% body fat percentages. I simply wasn’t the most fun guy to hang out with in social situations due to my extreme dietary restrictions, the intense self-control became nearly exhausting, and when I traveled, I missed out on many culinary experiences, such as homemade ravioli in Rome, freshly baked crostinis in the Basque regions of Spain, and Korean rice bowls in Seoul.
Thank you for this honest post on how Keto affected you. I did Keto for 6 weeks. I did lose 7 lbs but I struggled with depression and not using the bathroom regularly nice I started the diet. I searched and found carbs help with serotonin uptake which explained my depression. Everywhere I look people are pro Keto instead of discussing some the side effects. My gym friend told me she cried the last 4 days she did Keto before saying enough is enough. If it works for others, that’s great, but it’s refreshing to hear that I am not the only one who struggled and stopped Keto.

Once inside the mitochondrion, the dominant way that the bound fatty acids are used as fuel in cells is through β-oxidation, which cleaves two carbons off of the acyl-CoA molecule in every cycle to form acetyl-CoA.[24] Acetyl-CoA enters the citric acid cycle, where it undergoes an aldol condensation with oxaloacetate to form citric acid; citric acid then enters the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA), which harvests a very high energy yield per carbon in the original fatty acid.[25][26]

If you’re serious about maximizing the benefits of ketosis, then forego coconut oil, MCT liquid oil, olive oil, etc. and instead use Brain Octane as your oil of choice for recipes like bulletproof coffee, or in teas, salad dressings, or as a sushi or entrée flavor enhancer. For a slightly less expensive, but not quite as effective form of MCT, use XCT oil.
The DNA test does not necessarily take into account your goals (e.g. breathholding, Ironman, cognition, etc.) and if your goals would benefit from ketosis, then you may want to choose it as a dietary strategy even though it could indeed be true that for FAT LOSS a higher carb intake may suit you. So it all depends on your goals. Or you could just us the supplements like ketones AND eat more carbs and get "best of both worlds".
Ketones are produced if you eat minimal carbs and very moderate amounts of protein. On the keto diet, your body is fuelled almost entirely on fat. Your insulin levels drop and fat burning escalates. Optimal ketone levels are beneficial for weight loss, health, and also offer mental and physical performance benefits. You’ll be less hungry and also have a steady supply of energy.
One of the most extraordinary claims in Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution was the metabolic advantage hypothesis, which theorizes that the inefficiencies in the fat-burning process caused an energy advantage (in layman’s terms, it was hypothesized that using fat for fuel causes you to burn more calories). Unfortunately, a 2006 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition said that calorie per calorie, you’ll lose the same amount of weight on both a ketogenic diet and a reduced calorie, controlled carb (but not ketogenic) diet. Amazing what you can get people to believe when you sell some books.
Your calorie deficit. The one factor that leads to the most significant and consistent weight loss is a calorie deficit. In other words, when we consume fewer calories than we need to maintain our weight, we will lose weight. This means that your weight loss rate will usually increase as your total calorie consumption decreases. However, there are limits to how far you should take you should take your deficit. The human body is designed to prevent massive amounts of weight loss during times of starvation via mechanisms that make long-term fat loss much harder to achieve and maintain. Because of this, it is never a good idea to starve yourself for extended periods of time. Research indicates that calorie deficits above 30% are enough to stimulate some of these counterproductive mechanisms for long-term fat loss.
Thanks for your comment. First off, I’m not influencing anyone to not try something. What I’m doing is giving people a safe space to say, “hey, this didn’t work for me, and that’s okay!” You have to remember, I’m writing this from MY perspective and how keto turned my eating into a disordered eating pattern. Yes, there are resources out there people can find to support keto, but there are also resources out there that show that keto isn’t for the average person. We can’t just look at one side, and that’s the conversation I’m trying to have.
So how does our body make ketones out of the stored fat?  First blood sugar and insulin have to be low enough to allow access to stored fat.  If they are, stored fat (in the form of triglyceride) can be mobilized as a fuel source. A substance called hormone sensitive lipase (HSL) breaks the triglyceride compound down into one glycerol molecule and 3 fatty acid molecules. These fatty acid molecules come in various lengths of carbon based chains.
I started Keto 6 months ago and my physical and mental health has never been better. I used to suffer pretty bad mood swings.They are now gone. Bloating has completely gone. Low energy has gone. I have lost lots of weight and people tell me I look younger. My skin glows and my hair shines. I genuinely feel amazing and this is most certainly not a fad diet. This is for life. I wouldn’t dream of going back to eating rice and pasta. There are so many interesting alternative to carbs and some great recipes now online that food and cooking has become really exciting and experimental. I make great Keto ice cream. The first 2 weeks were awful yes, it’s called Keto flu. It’s your body adjusting to being a fat burner as opposed to a sugar burner. Then WOW did I feel good. It’s completely changed my life and my relationship with other people. My kids have told me they love the new “calmer” me and are much happier. I would urge anyone to really try this lifestyle choice and give it at least 6 months, experiment with recipes. Caulirice fried in butter with some chicken stock and garlic is a delicious alternative to rice. Have your bacon and eggs for breakfast with some almond bread smothered in salty butter and a cup of coffee with cream. Have fun learning about Keto cookery. You will be amazed at some of the wonderful recipes out there. Crabs were definitely detrimental to my health in a big way, particularly my mental health. For the first time in my life I feel happy. I’m 50 yrs old.
In the end, I'm pleased with my keto diet results both internally and externally. I lost 4 pounds in two weeks, gained some energy and efficiency with my training, and more often than not felt that I could see better muscle tone instead of feeling bloated or weighed down. While the ketogenic diet may not be my go-to on a regular basis, Dr. Axe's final feedback was encouraging: He says because I've now had a successful keto trial run, if I wanted to cycle through some keto weeks (or even a month, next time), I'd be able to easily, potentially reaching ketosis even more quickly. While going full-force back on the carbs could derail me or anyone else who wants to keto-cycle, Dr. Axe says the odds are in my favor. “Ninety percent of the time if someone's done it once, they will get into ketosis quicker and easier the next time,” he says.
Blood tests often report the level of total cholesterol (HDL + LDL) as well as the levels of each type independently. It is possible that the relative abundance (ratio) of HDL: LDL is more important to predict the occurrence of cardiovascular disease that the total cholesterol level109. Whilst the ketogenic diet can cause an increase in total cholesterol, the ratio of healthy HDL : less healthy LDL generally increases (i.e more HDL)110 whilst following a ketogenic diet. In contrast, whilst total cholesterol tends to be lower whilst following a low fat diet, the ratio of HDL:LDL tends to be lower (i.e more LDL)21. 
For someone more interested in health/muscle gain rather than weight loss, should I up the protein and good carb levels a bit? I’m around 10% BF and weigh 220, so I require a higher calorie intake the average. In just a few days striving for a Keto-diet, I’m averaging between 50-60g gross carbs (30g net), 160g protein and 220 fat (8%-22%-70%) DO you think that is a good target or should I try and adjust?
Between the butter and the so-called “Brain Octane Oil” that are part of the Bulletproof coffee recipe, any increased energy one feels after consuming it could have something to do with the nearly 500 calories of fat that are in it. As has been pointed out, those calories displace other more nutrient-dense sources of fuel. Asprey also claims that his coffee is better for you because it doesn’t contain mycotoxins, i.e. toxins produced by fungi. Though it’s true that mycotoxins can be dangerous for your health, the possibility of any roasted coffee available on store shelves containing mycotoxins is slim to none. It’s like slapping “this coffee was not made with white rhino horn” on the label.
Some people do not produce enough ketones to show up in their urine. If you are experiencing a reduction in your appetite and an improvement in well-being and are losing weight or your clothes are feeling looser, there is no need to do anything differently. Remember, the lipolysis testing strips (LTS) are tools; making them change color is not the sole object of the game. If you are not losing weight, you either have a strong metabolic resistance to weight loss or you are consuming "hidden" carbohydrates in the form of sweetened salad dressing, breading, etc. Then follow Induction strictly for five days. If the LTS still haven�t changed even slightly, make sure you are not consuming excess protein and measure your salads to make sure you are not eating too many veggies. Still no change? Try cutting out tomatoes and onions, which are relatively high on the glycemic index. You may also benefit from nutritional supplements such as L-carnitine, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), and chromium - all of which aid in hunger reduction or weight loss. You may also need to step up the frequency and intensity of your exercise program.
An increase in fat burning ability could decrease the efficiency of exercise: one adaptation to a high fat diet is an increase in a process called mitochondrial uncoupling. This means that some of the stored energy from metabolic substrates is not used to generate ATP but is ‘dissipated’ leading to a decrease in efficiency of energy production 26 ,19.  
When the kidneys filter blood, metabolic substrates such as glucose and ketones are re-absorbed to prevent energy wastage. If blood levels of a metabolite exceed the capacity of the kidney to reabsorb them, then a ‘spillover’ effect occurs and the metabolite (i.e. glucose or ketones) appear in the urine. However, urine is not a very reliable measure. Firstly, whilst following a ketogenic diet, adaptation occurs over time that means more ketones are reabsorbed in comparison to the early phase of the diet9. Furthermore, at higher levels of ketones, the appearance in the urine does not correlate to levels in the blood10. Similarly, after consumption of exogenous ketones, urine ketone levels were not in proportion to the levels in the blood11 this may be because of the rapid onset of ketosis in comparison to when ketosis is achieved with fasting or diet. Therefore urine test strips are useful as a guide but have several disadvantages to their use to accurately quantify levels of ketosis. 
The nerve impulse is characterised by a great influx of sodium ions through channels in the neuron's cell membrane followed by an efflux of potassium ions through other channels. The neuron is unable to fire again for a short time (known as the refractory period), which is mediated by another potassium channel. The flow through these ion channels is governed by a "gate" which is opened by either a voltage change or a chemical messenger known as a ligand (such as a neurotransmitter). These channels are another target for anticonvulsant drugs.[7]
People following a ketogenic diet may be at a higher risk of developing magnesium deficiency. This can happen because many magnesium-rich foods are high in carbs, which is usually a no-go on the keto diet. Hence, taking magnesium supplement or increasing intake of low-carb, magnesium-rich foods can help you meet your daily requirements and reduce symptoms like a muscle cramp, difficulty sleeping, and irritability. The second type of cellular fuel comes from fat and fat metabolism products called ketone bodies.   The average sized human body can store hundreds of thousands of calories in the form of fat, so we could say that this system of energy is almost unlimited, depending on how long one goes without food.  Eventually, it would get used up, but people have been known to fast for months and live through it.

Normal body cells metabolize food nutrients and oxygen during cellular “respiration”,  a set of metabolic pathways in which ATP (adenosine triphosphate), our main cellular energy source is created. Most of this energy production happens in the mitochondria, tiny cell parts which act as powerhouses or fueling stations. There are two primary types of food-based fuel that our cells can use to produce energy:
Shifting your metabolism and achieving ketosis may speed up weight loss and result in other health benefits, like more energy and a lower blood pressure. But while ketosis is a preferred nutritional state for some people, it isn’t recommended for everyone — and it’s not a good long-term eating approach due to its restrictive nature, which may lead to potentially dangerous nutritional deficiencies.

I am so glad that I never went full board on the keto diet. I work from home. Because of this, I have the option to eat my bigger meal at lunch time rather than dinner/supper. What I noticed for me personally is that when I go to bed on a fully carbed meal, I am less likely to want to eat breakfast in the morning. So, I have moved my carbs to lunchtime and then a dinner that is lighter and less carbed out. I also go to the gym in the evening and just don’t care for a heavy meal sitting on my stomach because I feel like I have to work out just to burn that meal off.
Cyclical ketogenic diet: The Bulletproof Diet falls into this category. You eat high fat, low carb (less than 50 grams of net carbs a day) five to six days of the week. On day seven, you up your carb intake to roughly 150 grams, during what’s called a carb refeed day. Carb cycling this way helps you avoid the negative effects some people experience when they restrict carbs long term, like thyroid issues, fatigue and dry eyes.[10] [11] Full ketosis isn’t for everyone, and adding carbs such as sweet potatoes, squash, and white rice one day a week keeps your body systems that need some amount of carbs functioning properly.
I’ve always heard that the brain functions well on ketones. Gluconeogenisis typically reduces ketosis, though as well? This is the first time I’ve heard anyone say the brain can’t use anything but glucose. I know there’s *preferred* sources of fuel over others, but I was also fairly certain other sources were fine.. or humans might be in a bit of trouble.
The diet gets billed as a miraculously enjoyable diet—eat all the fat you want, just cut out the carbs. But the ketogenic diet (also called keto) was never supposed to be fun. It was supposed to treat severe epilepsy. And as a medical treatment, it was only intended to be administered under the supervision of trained nutritionists and physicians. The professionals would be able to monitor patients for potential problems and ensure that their diet was actually keeping them in ketosis—a metabolic state where your body switches from using glucose as energy to using ketone bodies, which come from body fat. They needed those checkpoints because staying in true ketosis is exceptionally challenging for adults.
Concussion (a mild form of TBI), is defined as a short term impairment of brain function caused by impact. Symptoms include dizziness, confusion and headache. When the brain suffers a concussive impact this triggers an acute cascade of cellular events that can eventually cause chronic problems. Firstly, immediately after impact there are changes to the concentrations of ions and neurotransmitters in and outside of the neurones. For example, the cells release potassium and glutamate (excitatory neurotransmitter); this can cause neuronal damage instantly64. The disruption to the equilibrium of substances within the brain must be corrected, which requires the action of the ATP dependant ion pumps in the cell membranes. In order to produce enough ATP the brain has a transient period of high glucose metabolism (within 30 minutes of impact), which is followed by a period of glucose metabolic depression that can last anywhere from 5 days to several months, depending on severity65. In this time the brain is starved of energy when it is unable to metabolise glucose, which can cause long term damage. Severe or repeated impacts can lead to development of conditions such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). 
When you’re eating the foods that get you there (more on that in a minute), your body can enter a state of ketosis in one to three days, she adds. During the diet, the majority of calories you consume come from fat, with a little protein and very little carbohydrates. Ketosis also happens if you eat a very low-calorie diet — think doctor-supervised, only when medically recommended diets of 600 to 800 total calories.

The biggest draw for me is how many of those who’ve tried it say they don’t get hungry. The possibility of that blows my mind, as someone who’s used to any sort of calorie restriction meaning hours of feeling hungry every day. It’s tantalizing enough that I at least want to try. And what have I got to lose, right? I’m already morbidly obese; it’s hard to imagine screwing this up so bad it makes that worse.
Fasting: As with caloric restriction, any benefits of fasting are likely to stem from the lowering of glucose, and insulin plus the elevation of ketone bodies. However, fasting may not be a good fit for patients who are already subject to a huge physiologic stress, particularly when being treated with chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Patients are frequently immunocompromised and may also experience muscle wastage (cachexia). However, fasting may sensitise cells to the effects of chemotherapy95, so a short fast prior to a treatment cycle could potentiate the drug’s efficacy. 
I’ll warn you: when you first start using BHB salts like KetoCaNa, it can cause some temporary GI upset until you get acclimated to use. For me, this manifested in just a little bit of gas and bloating that subsided after about one week of use. Additionally, you should know that this product contains salt, so it counts as part of your daily salt intake.
On the ketogenic diet I feel very shaky/anxious from when I wake up til about noon. Eating doesn’t really help. It could be electrolyte related but seems possibly more related to excess cortisol/adrenaline as noon is also when I start to crash and get tired on a more normal diet, and because those 3 am awakenings that worsen simultaneously in ketosis seem to also have to do with HPA axis stuff. Does this side effect potentially also have to do with my fasting blood sugar being elevated?

I've been researching the ketogenic diet for quite awhile so when I started this book, I was a little skeptical that there was anything else I could learn. I was wrong. Craig and Maria have done a wonderful job breaking down the science in a way that's easy to understand. Their knowledge and experience show you how to be successful on keto and how to break through plateaus so you can achieve your health goals. This isn't a "this is how keto works for me and my body so it should work for you too" book, it's a "this is how the human body works, how keto affects the human body, and how you can be successful with keto all based on science". There are also chapters dedicated to discussing the benefits of keto and how to heal your body - it's not all about weight loss. I knew keto was a good way to eat, but I had no idea how many syndromes, diseases, and even cancers that can be reversed through a clean keto diet.

Before starting, ask yourself what is really realistic for you, Mattinson suggests. Then get your doctor’s okay. You may also work with a local registered dietitian nutritionist to limit potential nutrient deficiencies and talk about vitamin supplementation, as you won’t be eating whole grains, dairy, or fruit, and will eliminate many veggies. “A diet that eliminates entire food groups is a red flag to me. A systematic review in 2016 found and analysed seven randomized controlled trials of ketogenic diet in children and young people with epilepsy.[2] The trials were done among children and young people for whom drugs failed to control their seizures, and only one of the trials compared a group assigned to ketogenic diet with a group not assigned to one.[16] The other trials compared types of diets or ways of introducing them to make them more tolerable.[2] Nearly 40% of the children and young people had half or fewer seizures with the diet compared with the group not assigned to the diet. Only about 10% were still on the diet after a few years.[2] Adverse effects such as hunger and loss of energy in that trial were common, with about 30% experiencing constipation.[16]
A high proportion of energy from ketone oxidation is transferred to the electron transport chain at the start (as NADH+), in comparison to the energy from fat, where a high proportion is transferred ‘downstream’ (as FADH). This means that, even though there is a high amount of ‘potential energy’ in a fat molecule, less of this can be transferred to ATP.   
Pro Tip: On keto, you don’t need to fixate on a precise calorie count because weight loss comes from getting within your ideal calorie range. However, it will help to pay attention to your macronutrient proportions: 5 percent of calories from carbs; 20-30 percent from protein; and 70-80 percent from fat. I got gout from drinking Vitamin Water-32 grams of sugar per bottle which equals 8 tsp. of sugar per bottle. Next time you buy pop or fruit juice or some processed food check for carbs. Our western diet is turning us into an obese society full of diseases. I find this very sad especially for the next generation. I truly believe a low carb diet could turn this around. I love Keto and all the great recipes and I will stay on it for the rest of my life. I am now off all medication and feeling great.
A systematic review in 2018 looked at sixteen studies on the ketogenic diet in adults. It concluded that the treatment was becoming more popular for that group of patients, that the efficacy in adults was similar to children, the side effects relatively mild. However, many patients gave up with the diet, for various reasons, and the quality of evidence inferior to studies on children. Health issues include high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high total cholesterol, and weight loss.[23]
The fatty acids then flow into the bloodstream and are taken up by body tissues.  Once in the cells, the fatty acids are transported into the mitochondria of the cell to be metabolized carbon by carbon in a process called beta-oxidation. As glucose levels fall and fatty acid levels in the blood rise, the liver cells ramp up beta-oxidation which increases the amounts of a molecule called Acetyl-CoA. As the level of Acetyl-CoA rises, it is shunted to a process called ketogenesis. Ketogenesis generates a ketone body called acetoacetate first, and this ketone is then converted into the two other types of ketones: beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone.  Meanwhile, the glycerol part of the fat molecule gets converted into glucose in a process called gluconeogenesis, which means "make new sugar".
Advocates of the keto diet will say that while their total cholesterol will increase, it’s only the good kind (HDL) that increases, not the bad kind (LDL.) However, a study using the keto diet as a form of treatment for epileptic seizures in children found that after 6 months of administering the diet, triglyceride levels increased, total cholesterol levels increased, and HDL and LDL increased. So if heart disease runs in your family, you may want to do more research before jumping on the Keto bandwagon.
If you want to reach ketosis, the most important thing is to avoid eating most carbs. Keep your carb intake to around 20 to 50 grams per day for the diet to work most effectively. You’ll want to stock up on low carb foods, and be mindful of low carb veggies and fruit. Limit your intake of root vegetables like mushrooms and squash, berries and citrus fruits. Here’s a low carb food list for the keto diet.
Selecting the right food will be easier as you become accustomed to the Keto approach. Instead of lean meats, you’ll focus on skin-on poultry, fattier parts like chicken thighs, rib-eye steaks, grass-fed ground beef, fattier fish like salmon, beef brisket or pork shoulder, and bacon. Leafy greens such as spinach, kale and lettuce, along with broccoli, cauliflower and cucumbers, make healthy vegetable choices (but you’ll avoid starchy root foods like carrots, potatoes, turnips and parsnips). You can work in less-familiar veggies such as kohlrabi or daikon.
Reduced hunger. Many people experience a marked reduction in hunger on a keto diet. This may be caused by an increased ability of the body to be fueled by its fat stores. Many people feel great when they eat just once or twice a day, automatically ending up doing a form of intermittent fasting. This saves both time and money, while also speeding up weight loss.
You need to educate yourself about cholesterol. I recommend reading The Great Cholesterol Myth and also Cholesterol Clarity. Who cares if total cholesterol increases. Yes good fats can in some people raise LDL ( which is NOT bad cholesterol unless it’s oxidized) I’ve never heard of the Keto diet elevating triglycerides IF it’s done right. Never! If it’s done right, triglycerides go down, usually way down, LDL MIGHT rise in some people but HDL goes up and if you get the correct cholesterol test which breaks down LDL into particle size and number, you’ll find that even if it’s elevated, it’s made up of mostly large fluffy LDL,s instead of the harmful small dense LDLs which damage vessel walls. IF Keto is done right the HDL to triglyceride ratio ( most important numbers on a regular lipid panel) is very low- and that’s excellent.
That doesn’t mean you’ll go hungry on a diet. It’s quite the opposite! You’re not starving yourself of calories but of carbohydrates. Your body won’t go into what’s known as starvation mode, which is where your metabolic rate drops considerably. You’re adding more fat to the diet and taking out the carbs, so the metabolism can still work, and you get the energy you need.
In Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the function of the brain is compromised by the buildup of debris (plaques and tangles) inside the neurons. This mainly occurs in the areas of the brain associated with memory, intelligence, judgement, behaviour and language and impairs the ability to complete normal day to day tasks and to interact socially. Whilst the symptoms of AD usually only begin to appear with age, evidence suggests that damage to the brain begins to accumulate years earlier. This includes the buildup of plaques and tangles and a decreased ability to metabolise glucose (brain insulin insensitivity)50. If an individual has Type 2 Diabetes (systemic insulin insensitivity), the risk of AD is tenfold higher51.

Others consider the keto diet a short-term solution for weight loss. Tyler Drew, a 34-year-old real estate broker from Los Angeles, first read about the diet on Reddit and used it to lose 45 pounds in six months before returning to a traditional diet. While on the keto diet, Drew’s cholesterol levels improved, even though a typical day of eating involved bacon at both breakfast and dinner.
Well I've been doing Keto for almost 3 months now and I feel great. I have more energy than I've add in a long time and I'm becoming more of a morning person now LOL. I feel so much better about how I look now and I've actually wanted to dress nice for work, actually tucking in my polo now instead of just leaving it out. Last couple of weeks I've been teetering between 200 and 205 lbs. SOOOOO close to Onederland. Just gotta keep at it and KCCO. I've been inspired by all the progress pics posted here so hopefully my 3 month pics can inspire some of you!!!!. Meanwhile, the KD induces a ketosis that is not a pathological but physiological condition occurring on a daily basis. Hans Krebs was the first to use the term “physiological ketosis” despite the common view of it as oxymoron (Krebs, 1966); this physiological condition, i.e., ketosis, can be reached through fasting or through a drastically reduced carbohydrate diet (below 20 g per day). In these conditions, glucose reserves become insufficient both for normal fat oxidation via the supply of oxaloacetate in the Krebs cycle and for the supply of glucose to the central nervous system (CNS) (Felig et al., 1969; Owen et al., 1969) (Figure ​(Figure1).1). It is well-known that the CNS cannot use FAs as an energy source because free FAs cannot cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This is why the brain normally uses only glucose. After 3–4 days without carbohydrate intake (KD or fasting) the CNS must find alternative energy sources as demonstrated by Cahill et al. (Owen et al., 1967, 1969; Felig et al., 1969; Cahill, 2006). These alternative energy sources are the ketones bodies (KBs): acetoacetate (AcAc), β-hydroxybutyric acid (BHB) and acetone and the process of their formation occurring principally in the mitochondrial matrix in the liver is called ketogenesis (Fukao et al., 2004). Usually the concentration of KB is very low (<0.3 mmol/L) compared to glucose (≅ 4 mmol) (Veech, 2004; Paoli et al., 2010). Since glucose and KB have a similar KM for glucose transport to the brain the KB begin to be utilized as an energy source by the CNS when they reach a concentration of about 4 mmol/L (Veech, 2004), which is close to the KM for the monocarboxylate transporter (Leino et al., 2001).
So far in my experiments I don’t find that “fake ketosis” induced via taking brain octane oil to get purple urine strips (while eating about 70 grams of total carbs/day) has the same satiating, craving-busting effects for me as “real ketosis” (eating under 50 grams of total carbs/day). In “fake ketosis” I still feel the need to eat something every 2-3 hours and constantly crave carbs. Does anyone else on a supplemental ketone diet experience this or are they able to eat less frequently?

I’ve been on and off of my Keto diet with the primary purpose of losing weight. I’m 30 years old, workout daily – I’m in decent shape but have some extra fat around the mid-section that I’d like to get rid of, I am hoping to lose ~20 pounds of fat. However, the problem is that I am an extremely picky eater with tremendous cravings for some of my favorite carb-heavy foods – I only eat a number of high-fat / low-carb foods that help me attain Ketosis, so cycling through them multiple times a week becomes excruciating. I find myself cheating on my diet every 2 – 3 weeks, which causes a 3 – 5 pound setback that takes me a few days to overcome and get back into ketosis.

It’s a common misconception that the keto diet is a high-protein diet – it’s a moderate-protein diet where 20-25 percent of your calories come from protein. While it’s helpful to have a portion of protein at each meal to satiate you, you don’t want to overdo it. Too much protein can actually kick you out of ketosis, says Davoodi, through a process called gluconeogenesis, where your body converts extra protein into sugar. Your body will reach for the glucose first and no longer burn fat for fuel.
“For events longer than 60 minutes, consuming 0.7 g carbohydrates·kg-1 body weight·h-1 (approximately 30-60 g·h-1) has been shown unequivocally to extend endurance performance. Consuming carbohydrates during exercise is even more important in situations when athletes have not carbohydrate-loaded, not consumed pre-exercise meals, or restricted energy intake for weight loss. Carbohydrate intake should begin shortly after the onset of activity; [and continue] at 15- to 20-min intervals throughout the activity.”
This is the second shortest form of MCT, also rare and comprising about 8% of coconut oil. It is slower to turn into energy but less expensive than C8. XCT Oil is triple-distilled in a non-oxygen atmosphere with no solvents, and it contains C10 and C8, because these are the only two MCT oils that turn into ATP quickly without the liver. You would need 6 tablespoons of coconut oil to get one tablespoon of XCT oil.
The BBB, largely formed by the brain capillary endothelial cells, provides a protective barrier between the systemic blood and the extracellular environment of the CNS. Passage of FAs from the blood to the brain may occur either by diffusion or by proteins that facilitate their transport. Studies indicate that FATP-1 and FATP-4 are the predominant FA transport proteins expressed in the BBB based on human and mouse expression studies (Mitchell et al., 2011).
You probably expect to see results with keto quickly. Many keto eaters lose a lot of water weight rapidly after beginning this diet. Without carbs to maintain your glycogen (energy) stores, your body burns through them and dumps all the water they hold. That’s the “water weight” you will rapidly lose in the early days of a keto diet. “We see people quitting before they feel all the benefits of being a fat-burning machine. Some quit even as soon as the first week,” Santo says. That’s often the result of keto flu, a temporary condition that many keto eaters experience as their body transitions natural energy sources. Keto flu symptoms include mood swings, nausea, headaches, sluggishness, and more. “Many people do not realize that keto leads to fundamental changes in how the body operates,” says Dr. Metzagar.

“So I was talking about that and making sure everyone was hearing about that, and then there was one the Journal of the American Heart Association published a few years later that isolated the people who had had a heart attack in the past, the cardiology population that we're seeing, and they were doing a ketogenic diet," Williams told Plant Based News. “It was a 53 percent increase in mortality. No one should be doing this."

Protein: When people first reduce carbohydrates in their diets, it doesn't seem as though the amount of protein they eat is as important to ketosis as it often becomes later on. For example, people on the Atkins diet often eat fairly large amounts of protein in the early stages and remain in ketosis. However, over time, some (perhaps most) people need to be more careful about the amount of protein they eat as (anecdotally) the bodies of many people seem to "get better" at converting protein into glucose (gluconeogenesis). At that point, each individual needs to experiment to see if too much protein is throwing them out of ketosis and adjust as necessary.


I will begin a medically supervised weight loss program on Tuesday, that is intended to put me into ketosis via a very low calorie, high protein diet of shakes for two meals per day and one (controlled) regular meal. The overview of the program says to expect up to 2 weeks of foggyness and crankiness while getting in to ketosis. Will taking KetoCaNa 3 times a day for two days in advance of starting the diet (and during the introduction to the diet) help move me more quickly through the foggy, cranky phase? And should I also be eating (a ketogenic diet) during those two days or only drinking the KetoCaNa? My thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this!
BHB is the primary ketone your body can most efficiently use as fuel during exercise and at rest (especially when you’re keto-adapted), it is the most stable of the ketones, and it is actually found in nature in many foods including eggs and milk. A “BHB salt” is simply a compound that consists of sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), and the ketone body beta-hydroxybutyrate.
"I always make an assessment of whether or not the cheat is worth it and 99 percent of the time, it’s not. If I do have a cheat meal, I don't worry about what the scale says afterward. I want to be happy with the decision before I make it, during it, and after I make it. A lot of it is living with your decisions and not beating yourself up over it."

Adipose tissue can be used to store fatty acids for regulating temperature and energy.[21] These fatty acids can be released by adipokine signaling of high glucagon and epinephrine levels, which inversely corresponds to low insulin levels. High glucagon and low insulin correspond to times of fasting or to times when blood glucose levels are low.[23] Fatty acids must be metabolized in mitochondria in order to produce energy, but free fatty acids cannot penetrate biological membranes due to their negative electrical charge. So coenzyme A is bound to the fatty acid to produce acyl-CoA, which is able to enter the mitochondria.
It is true that, "The liver will make ketones from body fat, the fat you EAT, and from alcohol --- the ketone strips have no way of distinguishing the source of the ketones. So, if you test every day after dinner, and dinner usually contains a lot of fat, then you may very well test for large amounts of ketones all the time."This is why we recommend testing at the same time every day. The morning, before breakfast, is the best time because it will reflect what your body is doing, and not the previous meal. Unless someone tests negative in the morning, then we will recommend testing before bed.
If you’re following the keto diet, you will need protein, but you should limit your intake to about 20 percent of your total daily calories. (1) This is important because when you consume more protein than you need, your body converts the excess protein into carbs through a process called gluconeogenesis. This process pushes your body out of ketosis.
As a matter of fact, in animal models intracerebroventricular injections of long-chain FA reduced hypothalamic expression of NPY. NPY is an important orexogenic neuropeptide that is a downstream target of leptin and insulin in the hypothalamus. In some forms of hyperphagic obesity, characterized by elevated plasma leptin and insulin levels, the lack of action of insulin on NPY expression could explain the pathological condition. Central administration of oleic acid, fatty-acid synthase, or CPT-1 inhibitors prevents the rise in hypothalamic NPY mRNA induced by fasting (Obici et al., 2003). But glucose level is also involved in KD's food control mechanisms. According to glucostatic theory (Mayer, 1955) data indicates that ketosis did not influence FA glucose but instead stimulated the elevation of post-prandial glucose (Sumithran and Proietto, 2013) in non-diabetic subjects, while in diabetics there was a reduction of fasting glucose (Westman et al., 2008). It is important to note that carbohydrate availability may increase cellular levels of long-chain FA-CoA through an increase of malonyl-CoA, which inhibits oxidation of FAs.
I don’t agree with this article completely. I’ve been Keto for a year and half and have kept off the 45 lbs I’ve lost. I’ve gained more muscle mass by lifting and take mineral supplements which I needed before as well. I’ve not purchased and if the Keto “stuff” everyone seems to be selling these days. I still love this way of eating since my intestinal issues after gone and I’m feeling great. It may seem like a fad and with that reach person needs to research very careful to what is healthy and what is not.
When the kidneys filter blood, metabolic substrates such as glucose and ketones are re-absorbed to prevent energy wastage. If blood levels of a metabolite exceed the capacity of the kidney to reabsorb them, then a ‘spillover’ effect occurs and the metabolite (i.e. glucose or ketones) appear in the urine. However, urine is not a very reliable measure. Firstly, whilst following a ketogenic diet, adaptation occurs over time that means more ketones are reabsorbed in comparison to the early phase of the diet9. Furthermore, at higher levels of ketones, the appearance in the urine does not correlate to levels in the blood10. Similarly, after consumption of exogenous ketones, urine ketone levels were not in proportion to the levels in the blood11 this may be because of the rapid onset of ketosis in comparison to when ketosis is achieved with fasting or diet. Therefore urine test strips are useful as a guide but have several disadvantages to their use to accurately quantify levels of ketosis. 
It also means that if you’re a very active athlete or exercise enthusiast and you’re following “trickle-down” advice from the sedentary or less active ketosis experts to eat less than 40g of carbs per day, you’re making a big mistake when it comes to your hormonal balance, and you need to up your carbohydrate intake to 100-200g of carbs per day. You’d be surprised at how easy it is (if you’re a very active person) to stay in ketosis on this level of carbohydrate intake. Go ahead. Do Ketonix breath testing to prove me wrong. You can eat boatloads of carbohydrates at night and be back in ketosis within just two to three hours. When you combine that with the cutting-edge tricks you’re about to learn, you’ll find that you can toss hormonal issues out the window, get into ketosis, have your cake, and eat it too. Literally.
As a matter of fact, from a pure biology perspective, lauric acid should actually be considered a LCT, because unlike C8 and C10 forms of MCT, lauric acid gets processed by your liver. This matters because your body metabolizes MCT’s differently than LCT’s: unlike LCT’s, MCT’s get very quickly converted into ketone energy to fuel your brain and body instead of requiring a pit stop in the liver for processing.
One hypothesised contributor to neuronal death is insufficient energy production, secondary to impaired mitochondrial function. However, it is unclear if this is in fact a cause or effect of PD. Whatever the case may be, patients with PD have been shown to have impaired mitochondrial energy production in the brain59 and lower brain glucose utilisation60. Another factor may be neuro-inflammation, which is also common in PD, and is thought to lead to further accumulation of Lewy Bodies and neuronal death.

Thank you for this honest post on how Keto affected you. I did Keto for 6 weeks. I did lose 7 lbs but I struggled with depression and not using the bathroom regularly nice I started the diet. I searched and found carbs help with serotonin uptake which explained my depression. Everywhere I look people are pro Keto instead of discussing some the side effects. My gym friend told me she cried the last 4 days she did Keto before saying enough is enough. I’m with you. I have lost 45 pounds on Keto, and I’m now off ALL diabetic medication. Also the arthritis in my fingers and knees don’t hurt anymore. My energy is off the charts and I feel so good. I think people who have glycemic insulin resistance will live l9nger and may not lose limbs and need new livers because of high blood sugar. No diet or eating plan is for everyone, but for me Keto has saved my life and my feet. I’m so happy. Many Drs. Are promoting a Keto Lifestyle My doctor is ecstatic at my A1C and better health numbers in my blood tests. 😊
