Keto meals seemed so heavy and rich to me, and it just wasn't how I was used to eating. Plus, I consider myself a flexitarian, so the thought of eating more meat—and more often than I typically would—gave me pause. Dr. Axe assured me that even vegetarians could pull off a keto diet if they planned well enough. (Vegans can, too.) That said, he's a proponent of animal products and red meat specifically, because of the iron it provides for women (who are more susceptible to deficiency) and because it can bolster energy when carbs are lacking. (These Are the Other Things Vegetarians Need to Be Aware of Before Going Keto.)
Though I do appreciate your perspective based on your own experience which is very important and valid both to yourself and others, I would suggest that you state that your experience is only a personal one and that it isn’t a fact that this will be the experience for someone who’s body is in ketosis. I have personal experience with friends and family who have not only completely turned their lives around Healthwise but have reversed diabetes, cardiovascular disease and lost over 70 pounds which is a lot more than water weight, and have reversed some of the effects of a six-year-old epileptic girl who was told that she would have the symptoms she’s been experiencing for the rest of her life which have stopped at five months after following a ketogenic diet. I love hearing other peoples stories and experiences but it is important to acknowledge how cutting out complex carbohydrates and Sugars can really benefit a person’s mental state and their lives in general. Regardless of what nutritionist are saying in any part of the world if you watch a documentary called the magic pill it should open up your mind a bit on how following a meat , healthy fats and plant-based diet is what nature had always intended for human consumption and it’s people who have come in and created our food pyramid with what was being produced massively in order for people to make money which is wheat. I just thought I’d share my two cents, good luck with everything!
In order to best investigate the efficiency of different fuels, one needs a closed system, where the substrate conditions can be changed and the oxygen consumption and work done can be accurately measured. Isolated (ex-vivo) animal hearts are the best model to study these variables, as it is easy to manipulate the fuel provided (i.e glucose, ketones), to measure the oxygen use and also the amount of work (how much fluid is pumped).
We now know the ketogenic diet has many other therapeutic benefits. One of them being that it trains the body to burn fat (in place of sugar) for fuel making the ketogenic diet an excellent choice for weight loss and improvement in body composition. The ketogenic diet is also excellent at treating and preventing insulin resistance like as found in type 2 diabetes and can even lower diabetic medication dosage or even prevent one’s need for blood sugar lowering medication. Weight loss through a ketogenic diet can also help lower cholesterol and triglycerides and improve overall cardiovascular function as well.
“Given that there is no known detriment to consumption of a high-carbohydrate diet (other than body weight gain due to water retention) and some research reports a benefit, it is recommended that all athletes consume a high-carbohydrate training diet, i.e., at least 60-70% of energy as carbohydrate (7-10 g/kg), and increase this to 65-85% for the few days before competition. Use of a carbohydrate supplement before and during exercise will likely improve performance of intermittent, high-intensity sprints.”
All new habits need a plan. Luckily, I had the Keto360 Blueprint (which mapped out how this was all going to go down), Dr. Axe at my disposal for ALL the questions, a Keto360-approved food list, and a husband who agreed to jump on the two-week keto bandwagon with me. (Research shows that having a buddy system will increase your rate of success in fitness, a diet, and even sticking to your New Year's resolutions.) Still, sitting down to figure out my first week of keto diet meals and snacks was daunting. (Side note: I knew that if I was going to succeed at this, I'd have to be able to buy lunch. Luckily, Dr. Axe is totally on board, saying that most café salad bars will have what I need to create a keto meal—a big spinach salad with salmon and avocado, for example.)
I would do breath ketone measurements. That's exactly what I do and this is what I use :https://greenfieldfitnesssystems.com/product/ketonix-breath-ketone-monitor/
Thank you soooooo much for your blog! I’m 35 and have struggled with loving myself and food now for over 20 years. I eat because I have to, not because I want to. I could go all day without even realizing I haven’t had anything to eat. I looked into maybe starting this diet, just to see if there was any benefits to it. After reading your blog I have realized how dangerous it could be for me.
I’ve done a lot of soul searching this past year, and I actually thank keto for that. Because without it, I may not have reached this point in my life. The point where I care more about experiences rather than the food that goes in my mouth. The point where I love my body just as it is, no matter what size I am. The point where I wake up everyday and don’t worry about food, but rather look forward to being present in my life and my family’s lives.
Nutrient-sensitive neurons reacting to glucose but also to fatty acids (FAs) concentrations are present at many sites throughout the brain and may play a key role in the neural control of energy and glucose homoeostasis. Central administration of oleate, for example, inhibits food intake and glucose production in rats. This suggests that daily variations in plasma FA concentrations could be detected by the CNS as a signal that contributes to the regulation of energy balance (Moulle et al., 2014).
Those who’ve had their gallbladder removed may need ox bile supplementation to support their body in breaking down fats[*] and aid in overall digestion. When taken with a meal, ox bile provides a concentrated source of bile which takes the place of the bile that would have been secreted by your gallbladder. As mentioned before, proper digestion is key to helping aid in weight loss and optimizing overall health and wellness.
