Great article! I tried Keto for a while & became a slave to food. I didn’t stick with it long enough to notice any effects on my health or energy, but the fact that all I could think about was what I could eat next and when, was enough for me to call it quits. I am in the military, and need to stay in top shape and have lots of energy, so my diet contains lots of protein, moderate fats, & moderate to high-carbs. I agree with the Keto advocates that fat is not bad, refined sugar has little to no nutritional value, and the Standard American Diet will probably kill us, but eating legumes and whole grains will not. Like you say, Keto might work for some, but it doesn’t seem practical for most of us. Thank you for your story and a common sense article.

Here’s encouragement…it’s not all about weight in the beginning. As you ween off of sugar (which is really poison to your body), your body has to start getting rebooted. I had a solid week or more of serious detox. I knew that getting the poison out of my body was going to be significant, and it was. Don’t be discouraged. It’s well worth it to truly rid your gut and body of cancer-causing poison, not to mention your ability to fight disease. The acid level will change. Your arthritis (joints) will improve. Stick with it and don’t give up. Your family is worth it!

Given the choice of a fat and protein source like meat or a salt and carb rich food like potato chips, we are designed say yes to both. No matter how stuffed we are, the most primal parts of our brain will typically tell us that there is room for more if a novel food source is available. These behaviors were essential for our survival as a species. If we ate reasonably whenever food was available, then we wouldn’t have enough fat or muscle to fuel us when calories were scarce.
The handheld devices that are available for home testing (such as FreeStyle by Abbott, or KetoMojo) require a small droplet of blood (obtained by a finger prick with a lancet) to be placed on a testing strip. A new testing strip must be used each time a reading is taken. The machine delivers a numerical blood BHB measurement in the unit milli molar (mM) after ~8 seconds.
It seems strange that a diet that calls for more fat can raise “good” cholesterol and lower “bad” cholesterol, but ketogenic diets are linked to just that. It may be because the lower levels of insulin that result from these diets can stop your body from making more cholesterol. That means you’re less likely to have high blood pressure, hardened arteries, heart failure, and other heart conditions.
For those who love their potatoes, pasta, and even fruit, this is a diet that will change your lifestyle completely. You’ve probably already guessed that the pasta and other wheat foods are not allowed. Potatoes and other starchy foods, like legumes and beans, are also on the banned list and that makes sense to many. But fruit? Is fruit not allowed?
When the kidneys filter blood, metabolic substrates such as glucose and ketones are re-absorbed to prevent energy wastage. If blood levels of a metabolite exceed the capacity of the kidney to reabsorb them, then a ‘spillover’ effect occurs and the metabolite (i.e. glucose or ketones) appear in the urine. However, urine is not a very reliable measure. Firstly, whilst following a ketogenic diet, adaptation occurs over time that means more ketones are reabsorbed in comparison to the early phase of the diet9. Furthermore, at higher levels of ketones, the appearance in the urine does not correlate to levels in the blood10. Similarly, after consumption of exogenous ketones, urine ketone levels were not in proportion to the levels in the blood11 this may be because of the rapid onset of ketosis in comparison to when ketosis is achieved with fasting or diet. Therefore urine test strips are useful as a guide but have several disadvantages to their use to accurately quantify levels of ketosis.
You likely heard that a high-fat, low-carb keto diet can melt fat. Because it contains virtually no carbs, a ketogenic diet forces your body to burn fat instead of glucose for fuel. Ketosis is the state your body enters when your liver effectively breaks down fats into ketones to use as energy. Without glucose, your body doesn’t have all the highs and lows that lead to hunger pangs, energy crashes, and cravings. Instead, your blood sugar levels stay stable. Your body also sheds excess weight — fast.
I am so glad that I never went full board on the keto diet. I work from home. Because of this, I have the option to eat my bigger meal at lunch time rather than dinner/supper. What I noticed for me personally is that when I go to bed on a fully carbed meal, I am less likely to want to eat breakfast in the morning. So, I have moved my carbs to lunchtime and then a dinner that is lighter and less carbed out. I also go to the gym in the evening and just don’t care for a heavy meal sitting on my stomach because I feel like I have to work out just to burn that meal off.

The problem with this is that MOST people don’t turn to keto as a lifestyle. Many turn to it and use it as a diet for quick weight loss. If you love keto and live a keto lifestyle, not feeling deprived in any way, then okay, eat keto! But I don’t agree that we need to demonize certain foods. This can lead to eating disorders and an unhealthy relationship with food, and this is why I wrote this article, to help people like me who have to deal with this.
1. If a set number ketones in the blood is an indicator that my body has transitioned to ketosis and not necessarily the cause (the cause being limited access to glycogen because of limited carb intake) then how does using exogenous ketones put me in ketosis as opposed to mimic being in ketosis (because when measuring blood ketones suddenly there are more because I put them there, I didn’t create them)?
The solution? One way of approaching this issue is through dieting. To adapt to such an abundant food environment, you need to give your brain new food rules to follow (e.g, a diet). Your brain needs you to tell it what to eat and what not to eat to meet your health goals. One of the best ways to do this is by finding a diet with simple rules that you can follow for the rest of your life.
You could pick any of the countless diet books on the market, follow their plan to the last calorie, and lose weight. This is because — as study after study has shown — calories and dietary adherence matter more than anything for weight loss. You can gain or lose weight on any combination of foods. People have lost weight on twinkies, McDonalds, juice, plants, and obscene amounts of meat.
I will begin a medically supervised weight loss program on Tuesday, that is intended to put me into ketosis via a very low calorie, high protein diet of shakes for two meals per day and one (controlled) regular meal. The overview of the program says to expect up to 2 weeks of foggyness and crankiness while getting in to ketosis. Will taking KetoCaNa 3 times a day for two days in advance of starting the diet (and during the introduction to the diet) help move me more quickly through the foggy, cranky phase? And should I also be eating (a ketogenic diet) during those two days or only drinking the KetoCaNa? My thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this!
