IBS and even though I go for periods of time feeling well, it does flare up and drives me crazy. My husband, 66 years old has been doing the Keto diet for 5 months and have lost 25 lbs. (he has12 more to go to be on a healthier weight). I am his main support with Keto as I cook in a very creative and I vary his weekly menu a lot to make it Keto friendly and healthy. He is doing about 35-38 grams of carbs per day that allows more vegetables and berries. He has become extremely sensitive to sodium and gets bloated, therefore now also doing low sodium diet.

Enter the Internet. I tried a bunch of things… ordered this powder and that “organic concoction,” etc… nothing… I’m the cook in the family and my love for food has reared its beautiful head again. So in the spirit of finding a balance and battling my own obsessive issues, I eventually found a tea online that’s touted as a “detox” tea but I wouldn’t really call it that. I would describe it as doing the same thing for my obsessions that, say, chamomile tea does for relaxation. It literally “relaxes” my obsessions an mental “food shackles.” Yes, everything about it feels “salesy,” but I’ve tried literally a ton of these things and this one has had an extremely positive effect on my cravings to the point where I finally feel like I’m in control of my “food brain” again. Great post!! I’m a 41 year old Master CrossFit athlete, been in keto / LCHF Primal lifestyle for the past 9 years. I feel that my performance has improved a lot and continues to improve pretty significantly. I was a top 200 Master Open Qualifier on 2016 and 2017 and I’m usually on the podium of local competitions so my performance is really not bad…and I’m totally fat adapted. I follow sort of a TKD where I sometimes eat carbs at night during the week, but never above 100g so It doesn’t even kick me out of ketosis due to activity level. I’ve been playing with some measurements and I noticed that my BG reading after high intensity training sessions is really high (up to 180mg/dl). But it goes down fast (sometimes it goes down to 50mg/dl but I show no side effect of hypo, function completely normal). From my research, the high glucose post high intensity is normal and due to the stressful response of the exercise and also because my liver is producing the glucose from gluconeogeneses to provide it for the workouts, when needed. This only happens when the workouts are long, above 30 minutes.

My story seems to fit all the cliches on here. I have tried so many different things. I've juiced, I've counted calories, I over paid a website to try and coach me to health ($1200 O_O ) . The diet that worked for me was keto. Thanks for the recommendation for the keto strips- I ordered the exact ones and used my first test strip this morning- it worked great!! So I’ve got something else to keep me in check. Dropped 100 pounds after my first child (I really went overboard about eating for two- I thought I was doing something good) and then dropped 30 after my second child. Since then, it’s the same 10-15 pounds that I keep losing and gaining back. Love your mantras- I’ve written a few down in my journal and some just ring in my head like a music track- never two in a row!! Can’t outrun your fork!! With keto, it gets me fantastic and very quick results and I go with a recarb meal (not recarb day) once a week. Eat a little more carbs after workouts. I have that thing on a “real” ketogenic diet where I wake up at 3 am with my mind/heart racing and can’t sleep. It happens the very first day I reduce my carbs and continues as long as my carbs are reduced (5 weeks is the longest I’ve been able to put up with this to see if I could fix it and stay ketogenic). Magnesium and/ or cal-mag before bed does not help. Is carb loading at night the only hope for fixing this? I already take great care with bluelight and EMF.
One major downside to the ketogenic diet regarding diabetes is that you’re eating a lot of fat, and that fat may be saturated, which is unhealthy when eaten in excess. Because people with type 2 diabetes are at an increased risk for cardiovascular disease, there’s concern that the saturated fat in the diet may drive up LDL, or “bad,” cholesterol levels, and further increase the odds of heart problems. Now you’ve made the decision to follow the diet, it’s time to choose the type. There are four options. The standard ketogenic diet is the ones that we’ve already looked into, where your diet consists of 70% fat, 25% protein and the rest carbs. You can also follow a high protein option, which cuts your fat intake to 60% and your protein intake up to 35%.
Concussion (a mild form of TBI), is defined as a short term impairment of brain function caused by impact. Symptoms include dizziness, confusion and headache. When the brain suffers a concussive impact this triggers an acute cascade of cellular events that can eventually cause chronic problems. Firstly, immediately after impact there are changes to the concentrations of ions and neurotransmitters in and outside of the neurones. For example, the cells release potassium and glutamate (excitatory neurotransmitter); this can cause neuronal damage instantly64. The disruption to the equilibrium of substances within the brain must be corrected, which requires the action of the ATP dependant ion pumps in the cell membranes. In order to produce enough ATP the brain has a transient period of high glucose metabolism (within 30 minutes of impact), which is followed by a period of glucose metabolic depression that can last anywhere from 5 days to several months, depending on severity65. In this time the brain is starved of energy when it is unable to metabolise glucose, which can cause long term damage. Severe or repeated impacts can lead to development of conditions such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). 

Are you sure you have your percentages correct? Keto is 80% vegetables , 10% fat and 10% proteins. The diet you seem to be talking about sounds like Atkins. As a diabetic, keto has given me normal blood sugars with much less insilin, no more cravings, no more hunger. I’ve also lost 12 pounds in 6 weeks since I started it. Look up Dr. Berg. When we consider our genetics and the current food environment together, a fascinating story reveals itself. The human species evolved from millions of years of genes that were trying to survive an environment that they didn’t create. As a result, humans evolved the ability to create their own environment that allows them to fulfill their needs at any given moment with minimal effort.
I have never weighed myself after I started Keto though, I started out at 120kg and my goal was to hit 80kg eventually with no deadline. However, I was worried that if I hit it eventually, I would be less motivated to continue this lifestyle so yeah I have no idea what’s my weight now. I do know my waist has gone from 46” to 36” when I went to get new clothes.

Finally, following a ketogenic diet for 6 weeks improved the symptoms of mild cognitive impairment58. It is still early days, but the use of ketogenic diets and exogenous ketones may help to improve the quality of life of patients with dementia and their caregivers.

It can be postulated that the net balance of the contrasting stimuli results in a general reduction of perceived hunger and food intake. More studies are needed to explore the mechanism of potential beneficial effects of KD on food control.

-Cardiovascular Disease: High blood sugar has been shown to increase the risk for cardiovascular events, cardiovascular disease, and cardiovascular mortality—while lower glucose levels result in lower cardiovascular risk. Coronary artery disease risk has been shown to be twice as high in patients with impaired glucose tolerance, compared with patients with more normal glucose tolerance. The risk for stroke increases as fasting glucose levels rise above 83 mg/dL. In fact, every 18 mg/dL increase beyond 83 results in a 27 percent greater risk of dying from stroke. Incidentally, glucose can “stick” to cholesterol particles and render these particles extremely dangerous from a heart health standpoint, which is why it’s all the more important to control blood sugar levels if you’re eating a “high-fat diet.”

I have lost 5lbs so far, but what I have gained is beyond measure. I have been reading, learning and listening to so many theories that Jen has led me to. I was mad as I found out more and more about what I thought I knew about diets and was completely wrong and causing damage to my body. Ditto! I have an autoimmune disorder which includes rumathoid arthritis. Since I have been on Keto I suffer less pain and my blood pressure is now normal. Is it a cure all? Nope, it is a easy to follow life style change I recently turned 62 and I almost feel like a teenager again. Dang it, I’ve lost so much weight and now I’m going to have a neck lift to cut off the excess loose skin. I hate when that happens! 🙂

Same here, been low carb/keto fir almost 6 months, noticed energy levels increased. I started for medical reasons, I have brain cancer with seizures, I have not had any seizures at all since starting this. For me, if I don’t lose anymore (I have lost 25 lbs), and I could stand to lose about 25 more, but I am 64 and it’s harder lose those pounds, or I could be at my set point…
Are you tracking your calorie intake? Healthy fats also have higher calories and can put you at or over your bodies calorie requirement. Calculate the calories that you have been eating over the past while and then check how many calories you should actually be taking in. If you want to lose weight you have to be in calorie deficit regardless of whether you are in ketosis or not.
