This is questionable. There ARE a few studies that suggest caffeine may cause blood sugar to rise, with consequent effect on insulin ... The studies involve consuming 50 gm glucose orally, followed by a dose of caffeine. This is quite different from a low carber, who is consuming only 20 gm carbs, in the form of high-fiber vegetables, spread throughout the day.


Interesting article and I applaud you challenging any way of eating as so many of us are like sheep these days. However, for me, it’s really all about sugar. For example, the significant results of lowering sugar intake on type two diabetics should not be ignored. Look up Dr David Unwin’s success in the UK where many of his patients are in remission and, off their medication. I started a low sugar way of eating (diet is not a good word for anyone) Two years ago. I lost 20 kgs and have kept it off. I’ve looked at the science, I’ve looked at the manipulative history and current strategies of food manufacturers, but moreover, I look at my own results. Like you, I want my own ‘truth.’ We need to take individual responsibility in all areas of our lives to do that, instead of jumping on the next wagon of craze.
Now, there a few things you should know before you begin using KETO//OS. First, ketones naturally act as a diuretic, so you lose salt, potassium, calcium and magnesium, and it is generally encouraged to increase sodium intake with ketones. Problem is you referred Keto as a Diet and not a lifestyle that you choose to live bye. When you relax and just eat a ketogenic lifestyle for an extended period of time meaning at least 4 months or more you don’t need to count everything so closely as you did and really when I look at my fellow co workers and kids that my children go to school with it’s easy to see how that slice of bread, bowl of pasta and piece of cake is destroying American Health.
In order to obtain the most comparable measures, it is useful to measure blood ketones at the same time each day. Measuring immediately on waking means that there are fewer potential variables that could alter the measurement, such as exercise, or different food intake. However, it can also be useful to check ketone levels around 60-90 minutes after an intervention such after eating a fat rich meal or consuming exogenous ketones.      
Ketone urine-testing strips, also called Ketostix or just ketone sticks ... are small plastic strips that have a little absorptive pad on the end. This contains a special chemical that will change colour in the presence of ketones in the urine. The strips may change varying shades of pink to purple, or may not change color at all. The container will have a scale on the label, with blocks of colour for you to compare the strip after a certain time lapse, usually 15 seconds. Most folks simply hold a strip in the flow of urine. Other folks argue that the force of the flow can "wash" some of the chemical away, and advise that a sample of urine be obtained in a cup or other container, then the strip dipped into it.

I have that thing on a “real” ketogenic diet where I wake up at 3 am with my mind/heart racing and can’t sleep. It happens the very first day I reduce my carbs and continues as long as my carbs are reduced (5 weeks is the longest I’ve been able to put up with this to see if I could fix it and stay ketogenic). Magnesium and/ or cal-mag before bed does not help. Is carb loading at night the only hope for fixing this? I already take great care with bluelight and EMF.

The ketogenic diet is amazing for losing weight and improving your health, so stick with it and don’t be afraid to make changes as needed. Track what you eat, stick within your keto macros, and test your ketone levels frequently to make sure you’re staying in ketosis. Most of all, give your body time to respond to the great changes you’re making for it.

My doctor recommended a keto diet for me despite me having an eating disorder and being vegan. It has been so difficult to try to follow that it has made everything worse. My eating disorder is worse, my depression is worse, my anxiety around food is through the roof. I am so glad I found your article because it’s been so hard finding anything anti-keto! I am slowly reintegrating carbs but i do believe a lot of damage has been done in regards to my psychological health that it will take a long time to recover from this “diet”.
Clinical trials of various ketogenic agents have shown promising outcomes in AD. Recently, a case report was published describing a dramatic improvement in cognitive function in a patient consuming daily drinks of a ketone ester of beta-hydroxybutyrate-butanediol54. This corroborates evidence from animal studies of AD, which showed behavioural and anatomical improvements in AD mice treated with the same ketone ester55. Also, medical foods containing medium chain triglycerides can give an acute improvement in cognitive scores in AD patients 56 ,57. The effectiveness of this treatment was found to depend on the absence of a gene variant that has been associated to increased chance of AD, called APOE4. Finally, following a ketogenic diet for 6 weeks improved the symptoms of mild cognitive impairment58. It is still early days, but the use of ketogenic diets and exogenous ketones may help to improve the quality of life of patients with dementia and their caregivers.             
If you want to reach ketosis, the most important thing is to avoid eating most carbs. Keep your carb intake to around 20 to 50 grams per day for the diet to work most effectively. You’ll want to stock up on low carb foods, and be mindful of low carb veggies and fruit. Limit your intake of root vegetables like mushrooms and squash, berries and citrus fruits. Our body’s main source (and preferred source) of fuel is glucose, aka, carbs. We get energy from glucose to go about our daily activities. However, when glucose gets depleted from our body, either from cutting out carbs or not eating for a long period of time, our body looks for other sources of energy. When we decrease carbs to the point of having very little glucose being available, our insulin levels drop and fat is released from our cells. Our liver then turns this fat into ketones, our body’s second choice for energy.
That makes total sense for me too as I’m 65 and doing low carb the same way. My sugar and cholesterol are doing much better. Keeping the carbs lower stops me from going nuts on carbs later. I don’t consume so many fats as they recommend but enough to keep me happy. If I go out for a noodle bowl with friends I totally enjoy it and then get back on the wagon . Life is too short to get to obsessed about every macro. Never thought I could go without a potato every supper but here I am finding other great veggies to make up for it. Even have beans or a bit of fruit once in awhile just not too crazy with the helpings. I’m pretty proud of my self for sticking with this way of eating for over a year now. I feel better and that is what counts.
Normally, the body breaks down carbohydrates, fat, and (sometimes) proteins to provide energy. When carbohydrate is consumed in the diet, some is used immediately to maintain blood glucose levels, and the rest is stored. The hormone that signals to cells to store carbohydrate is insulin. The liver stores carbohydrate as glycogen, this is broken down and released between meals to keep blood glucose levels constant. Muscles also store glycogen, when broken down this provides fuel for exercise. Most cells in the body can switch readily between using carbohydrates and fat as fuel. Fuel used depends on substrate availability, on the energy demands of the cell and other neural and hormonal signals. 
It seems strange that a diet that calls for more fat can raise “good” cholesterol and lower “bad” cholesterol, but ketogenic diets are linked to just that. It may be because the lower levels of insulin that result from these diets can stop your body from making more cholesterol. That means you’re less likely to have high blood pressure, hardened arteries, heart failure, and other heart conditions. 
Following a low calorie diet: The exact mechanism whereby caloric restriction can slow or prevent cancer is unknown. Day 2: There's a bagel shop less than a block from my office. I pass it every single day and never really think anything of it. Well, not today! The smell of the freshly baked everything bagels—and was that veggie cream cheese I smelled?—was wafting out the door as I walked by extra quickly. (Though I found out later that there is a way to have bread and still stay in ketosis.) 
In the beginning of the study, all participants were instructed to consume either ≤20 g of fat (if in the low-fat group) or ≤20 g of carbs (if in the low-carb group) for the first two months, after which they could increase either their fat or carb intake to levels they felt they could sustain indefinitely. By the end of the trial, the vast majority had not been able to maintain such low levels. The final dietary recalls reported an average daily fat intake of ≈57 g (low-fat group) and an average daily carb intake of ≈132 g (low-carb group).
I started Keto 6 months ago and my physical and mental health has never been better. I used to suffer pretty bad mood swings.They are now gone. Bloating has completely gone. Low energy has gone. I have lost lots of weight and people tell me I look younger. My skin glows and my hair shines. I genuinely feel amazing and this is most certainly not a fad diet. This is for life. I wouldn’t dream of going back to eating rice and pasta. There are so many interesting alternative to carbs and some great recipes now online that food and cooking has become really exciting and experimental. I make great Keto ice cream. The first 2 weeks were awful yes, it’s called Keto flu. It’s your body adjusting to being a fat burner as opposed to a sugar burner. Then WOW did I feel good. It’s completely changed my life and my relationship with other people. My kids have told me they love the new “calmer” me and are much happier. I would urge anyone to really try this lifestyle choice and give it at least 6 months, experiment with recipes. Caulirice fried in butter with some chicken stock and garlic is a delicious alternative to rice. Have your bacon and eggs for breakfast with some almond bread smothered in salty butter and a cup of coffee with cream. Have fun learning about Keto cookery. You will be amazed at some of the wonderful recipes out there. Crabs were definitely detrimental to my health in a big way, particularly my mental health. For the first time in my life I feel happy. I’m 50 yrs old.
Great article! I tried Keto for a while & became a slave to food. I didn’t stick with it long enough to notice any effects on my health or energy, but the fact that all I could think about was what I could eat next and when, was enough for me to call it quits. I am in the military, and need to stay in top shape and have lots of energy, so my diet contains lots of protein, moderate fats, & moderate to high-carbs. I agree with the Keto advocates that fat is not bad, refined sugar has little to no nutritional value, and the Standard American Diet will probably kill us, but eating legumes and whole grains will not. Like you say, Keto might work for some, but it doesn’t seem practical for most of us. Thank you for your story and a common sense article.
Since originally publishing this article, I’ve been asked whether elevating blood ketones with exogenous sources could trigger a ketone-induced release of insulin that would theoretically reduce hepatic ketogenesis and perhaps slow fat mobilization. This makes sense since you are putting more energy into the system in general (from exogenous ketones), so there would be less need to draw off your own fat stores.

Day 5: As fate would have it, 3 p.m. rolls around and we get a message that there are cookies in the conference room. After initiation, the child regularly visits the hospital outpatient clinic where he or she is seen by the dietitian and neurologist, and various tests and examinations are performed. In general, people on ketogenic diets tend to consume a lot of foods high in monounsaturated and saturated fats such as olive oil, butter (often butter from grass-fed cows is recommended), avocado, and cheeses. The high oleic types of safflower and sunflower oils (but not the regular forms of these oils) are also good choices, as they are high in monounsaturated fats and low in polyunsaturated fats.

He died in April this year due to a massive heart attack. He was only 38. Autopsy report showed severely advanced coronary artery disease and almost complete heart block. The medical examiner said that this had to of started in his early 20s to be this advanced and that it's very hereditary. (at that time he ate HORRID and smoked, was very very overweight, stressed to the max etc). She stressed that everyone in his family be checked including children.
The Standard American Diet (SAD) is predominantly composed of carbohydrates making the body very good at breaking down carbohydrates for fuel but not as efficient at breaking down stored fat. The ketosis diet truly trains the body to burn fat for fuel and even after discontinuing a ketogenic plan the body is still much more efficient at breaking down stored body fat.
Given the prevalence of this category of illness, and the insidious nature of the conditions, an intervention with minimal side effects (vs. drugs) such as ketosis could be used as a first line intervention before attempting treatment with medication in some cases. However, there is still some way to go before research can conclusively address this possibility, individuals considering the diet should do so with full medical supervision.
After that happened, I set out once again to find some kind of carbohydrate source that allows one to maintain elevated liver glycogen and muscle glycogen stores without getting all the blood-sugar level roller coaster rides or gut rot and fermentation that many typical sports nutrition carbohydrate sources such as fructose and maltodextrin can cause.
Thanks for this article. It was really interesting. I have tried Atkins in the past, and I usually lose 10 pounds immediately and then start gaining it back PLUS MORE! Aaaargh. I tend to have high blood sugar and at age 41 am trying to do all I can to stay healthy and NOT get diabetes (I have five boys, the youngest of whom is only 6, who need their mama with all her limbs attached!). Anyhoo, I started the Trim Healthy Mama diet as soon as the book came out and lost 50 pounds in about 14 months. It was the first diet I ever did that gave me a lot of food freedom to eat carbs AND fats AND proteins. I am a HUNGRY mama, but I ate as much as my body wanted and had SOOOO much energy. A couple years into the diet, my middle son developed PANDAS and tic disorder, and we had to put him on GAPS diet and all kinds of nutritional therapy, so I found I didn’t have time to focus on my own health and diet at the same time as his, and his definitely took priority. So of course I gained over half the weight back over the past 3.5 years. But now my kiddo is doing so well and able to eat a lot of more normal foods, so I am back to eating THM style and riding my bike. I am already feeling better and hoping to lose this weight (4 pounds so far, but this is not a fast weight loss diet), bring the blood sugar down and get on with this wonderful, nutty life of mine! Many neurological conditions share a common feature of impaired brain energy metabolism. It isn’t always clear if this impairment is the cause or the effect of the disease, but nonetheless, interventions that even partially restore or improve brain energy metabolism could help to prevent, slow or even reverse some conditions of the brain. Because ketones can: 1) get into the brain; 2) undergo metabolism by a distinct pathway that bypasses glucose metabolism, providing ketones by either following a ketogenic diet or by taking exogenous ketones could impact the natural course of some neurological conditions. 
The classic ketogenic diet is not a balanced diet and only contains tiny portions of fresh fruit and vegetables, fortified cereals and calcium-rich foods. In particular, the B vitamins, calcium and vitamin D must be artificially supplemented. This is achieved by taking two sugar-free supplements designed for the patient's age: a multivitamin with minerals and calcium with vitamin D.[3] A typical day of food for a child on a 4:1 ratio, 1,500 kcal (6,300 kJ) ketogenic diet comprises:[27]

actually sugar is bad for you and does cause diseases. yes the keto is dangerous and not meant to be a long term way of eating. If you read more about it , it’s for people that are really overweight that need to lose a lot of weight quickly. Humans are not meant to eat that much meat. If you go back to the biblical days, which is the way we should still be eating, they ate more vegetables and fruits than meat. Fish was the only meat Jesus ate. More people need to base their diets off alkaline foods because our bodies are acidic and we need to eat more alkaline foods to balance the acid in our bodies. Acidic bodies are more likely to get diseases. Meats, starches, sugars, sodas, etc are considered highly acidic so we should only be eating those foods on occasion not on a daily basis. Vegetables and fruits are what should be the majority of our diets. I have been eating more alkaline foods for the past 2 weeks or less and have already noticed a difference in my weight and energy . No one wants to talk about alkaline foods because the doctors wouldn’t make any money if people were well all the time because they took care of their bodies. They are not taught about nutrition nearly as much as they are medicines in school. It’s sad, but true. They only know how to medicate a problem which usually doesn’t help and can even make things worse. They should be learning about nutrition and teaching people what to eat and what not to eat to prevent diseases.
How it’s done: Warm up the LEVL or Ketonix meter by plugging it in. Blow into it and wait for the flashing light indicating it’s reading your acetone levels. The software or the color and speed of the flashing light would tell your reading: green for least acetone, red for most acetone, less flashing for less acetone per color, more flashing for more acetone per color.
