This is questionable. There ARE a few studies that suggest caffeine may cause blood sugar to rise, with consequent effect on insulin ... The studies involve consuming 50 gm glucose orally, followed by a dose of caffeine. This is quite different from a low carber, who is consuming only 20 gm carbs, in the form of high-fiber vegetables, spread throughout the day.
Interesting article and I applaud you challenging any way of eating as so many of us are like sheep these days. However, for me, it’s really all about sugar. For example, the significant results of lowering sugar intake on type two diabetics should not be ignored. Look up Dr David Unwin’s success in the UK where many of his patients are in remission and, off their medication. I started a low sugar way of eating (diet is not a good word for anyone) Two years ago. I lost 20 kgs and have kept it off. I’ve looked at the science, I’ve looked at the manipulative history and current strategies of food manufacturers, but moreover, I look at my own results. Like you, I want my own ‘truth.’ We need to take individual responsibility in all areas of our lives to do that, instead of jumping on the next wagon of craze.

I have that thing on a “real” ketogenic diet where I wake up at 3 am with my mind/heart racing and can’t sleep. It happens the very first day I reduce my carbs and continues as long as my carbs are reduced (5 weeks is the longest I’ve been able to put up with this to see if I could fix it and stay ketogenic). Magnesium and/ or cal-mag before bed does not help. Is carb loading at night the only hope for fixing this? I already take great care with bluelight and EMF.

Track what you eat, stick within your keto macros, and test your ketone levels frequently to make sure you’re staying in ketosis. Clinical trials of various ketogenic agents have shown promising outcomes in AD. Our body’s main source (and preferred source) of fuel is glucose, aka, carbs. We get energy from glucose to go about our daily activities. However, when glucose gets depleted from our body, either from cutting out carbs or not eating for a long period of time, our body looks for other sources of energy. When we decrease carbs to the point of having very little glucose being available, our insulin levels drop and fat is released from our cells. Our liver then turns this fat into ketones, our body’s second choice for energy.
Normally, the body breaks down carbohydrates, fat, and (sometimes) proteins to provide energy. When carbohydrate is consumed in the diet, some is used immediately to maintain blood glucose levels, and the rest is stored. The hormone that signals to cells to store carbohydrate is insulin. The liver stores carbohydrate as glycogen, this is broken down and released between meals to keep blood glucose levels constant. Fuel used depends on substrate availability, on the energy demands of the cell and other neural and hormonal signals.
It seems strange that a diet that calls for more fat can raise “good” cholesterol and lower “bad” cholesterol, but ketogenic diets are linked to just that. Great article! I tried Keto for a while & became a slave to food. I didn’t stick with it long enough to notice any effects on my health or energy, but the fact that all I could think about was what I could eat next and when, was enough for me to call it quits. I am in the military, and need to stay in top shape and have lots of energy, so my diet contains lots of protein, moderate fats, & moderate to high-carbs. I agree with the Keto advocates that fat is not bad, refined sugar has little to no nutritional value, and the Standard American Diet will probably kill us, but eating legumes and whole grains will not. Like you say, Keto might work for some, but it doesn’t seem practical for most of us. Thank you for your story and a common sense article.
Since originally publishing this article, I’ve been asked whether elevating blood ketones with exogenous sources could trigger a ketone-induced release of insulin that would theoretically reduce hepatic ketogenesis and perhaps slow fat mobilization. This makes sense since you are putting more energy into the system in general (from exogenous ketones), so there would be less need to draw off your own fat stores.

After initiation, the child regularly visits the hospital outpatient clinic where he or she is seen by the dietitian and neurologist, and various tests and examinations are performed. He died in April this year due to a massive heart attack. He was only 38. Autopsy report showed severely advanced coronary artery disease and almost complete heart block. The medical examiner said that this had to of started in his early 20s to be this advanced and that it's very hereditary. (at that time he ate HORRID and smoked, was very very overweight, stressed to the max etc). She stressed that everyone in his family be checked including children.
