Apparently, Dominic’s research seems to be suggesting the fact that diet-induced ketosis from a high-fat, low-carb intake, especially when combined with the use of nutrition supplements such as powdered ketones or MCT oil, can vastly reduce the need for the brain to use oxygen to burn glucose. This is because the brain can use up to around 75% of its fuel from ketones. So a ketone-fed or a fat-adapted brain can be better equipped to withstand low oxygen availability and potentially support longer breath-hold times. Dominic’s research also shows that in the presence of ketosis, the brain and body are able to resist the potential cell damage of long periods of time with low oxygen, also known as “hypoperfusion”.
The average daily goal for keto is 20 grams of net carbs. Net carbs are the total carbs in a given serving of food, minus the carbohydrates that are supplied by fiber. Long story short I’ve had the most terrible diet and mindset about food of anyone you’ve ever met my entire life. It consisted of pretty much only carbs. After studying them I’ve realized that it’s the reason that I got so big.. 570 at my known largest when I was weighed in the hospital. First time seeing a doctor in over 20 years. I bought a scale and tried random diets but couldn’t keep to them. I stayed at 530 ish for a year.
Other experts say the long-term accumulation of ketones could be harmful. “Those ketones are emergency fuel sources, and we’re not meant to run on them long-term,” says Kristen Kizer, a registered dietitian at Houston Methodist Hospital. “Ketones are negatively-charged molecules, which means they’re acidic. Since then, it’s the same 10-15 pounds that I keep losing and gaining back. Love your mantras- I’ve written a few down in my journal and some just ring in my head like a music track- never two in a row!! Can’t outrun your fork!! The one about losing weight, looking good in the mirror, then world domination is my favorite. With keto, it gets me fantastic and very quick results and I go with a recarb meal (not recarb day) once a week. Eat a little more carbs after workouts. Now with the strips, I can see if what I’m doing post-workout keeps me in keto. I wish this article had come out a couple of months ago- I did hours of research before going keto, much of it bland, definitely no animal gifs. Exogenous ketones: Very little is known about the effects of exogenous ketones on cancer. However, as exogenous ketones can also lower blood sugar and elevate BHB they could be helpful by a similar mechanism to the ketogenic diet. Exogenous ketones may even be preferable to the ketogenic diet, as patients can eat a wider range of palatable and calorically dense food to maintain their strength during treatment. One animal study showed that ketone ester supplementation (acetoacetate diester) decreased tumour size and prolonged the survival of mice with metastatic cancer100.
Other research further supports the benefits of this diet. For example, the ketogenic diet has been linked to reduced symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. I did keto for quite awhile for weight loss reasons. I also had the same experience of being scared of food after being on it long enough. I realized that this way of eating was just not right for me. I mean, it got to the point where I’d sometimes just not eat. At the beginning of this summer, I decided it was best to just watch my calories to lose the rest of my weight (100 lbs gone from keto). Unfortunately, I started having very unwelcome effects of changing my diet to low cal. I started getting shaky, lightheaded, dizzy, nauseous, my vision blacked out, etc. This happened every single time I ate. Turns out that because I cut back so low on my carbs for so long and lost so much weight, my body couldn’t handle the carbs after eating. Thankfully, my doc finally just figured out what was wrong after a good couple of months of suffering. I have reactive hypoglycemia. My body overproduces insulin when I eat. My body essentially crashes.
Came across this old pic yesterday and wanted to compare it to my recently uploaded pic. This was from when I was doing an all fruit / starch vegan diet. I also consumed gluten here and there.. thank God I got tested for food sensitivities or I would be in poor health still. Nothing against the vegan diet, but everyone’s body is different. People have had success with veganism and people who are insulin resistant haven’t. I’m doing keto. My cholesterol is lower, triglycerides lower, LDL lower, HDL higher. My muscle mass increased and thus far, I have lost 26 lbs. Let me assure you that is not all water and most of it was fat. When I reach my goal weight, I will add back in some carbs and go to a maintenance plan. And while loving our bodies is important, keeping them healthy is a form of loving them. The problem lies in why you want to lose weight. Do you want to be healthier or are you hoping for greater value as a human. The later comes from within.
Your calorie deficit. The one factor that leads to the most significant and consistent weight loss is a calorie deficit. In other words, when we consume fewer calories than we need to maintain our weight, we will lose weight. This means that your weight loss rate will usually increase as your total calorie consumption decreases. However, there are limits to how far you should take you should take your deficit. The human body is designed to prevent massive amounts of weight loss during times of starvation via mechanisms that make long-term fat loss much harder to achieve and maintain. Because of this, it is never a good idea to starve yourself for extended periods of time. Research indicates that calorie deficits above 30% are enough to stimulate some of these counterproductive mechanisms for long-term fat loss.

I started Keto 6 months ago and my physical and mental health has never been better. I used to suffer pretty bad mood swings.They are now gone. Bloating has completely gone. Low energy has gone. I have lost lots of weight and people tell me I look younger. My skin glows and my hair shines. I genuinely feel amazing and this is most certainly not a fad diet. This is for life. I wouldn’t dream of going back to eating rice and pasta. There are so many interesting alternative to carbs and some great recipes now online that food and cooking has become really exciting and experimental. I make great Keto ice cream. The first 2 weeks were awful yes, it’s called Keto flu. It’s your body adjusting to being a fat burner as opposed to a sugar burner. Then WOW did I feel good. It’s completely changed my life and my relationship with other people. My kids have told me they love the new “calmer” me and are much happier. I would urge anyone to really try this lifestyle choice and give it at least 6 months, experiment with recipes. Caulirice fried in butter with some chicken stock and garlic is a delicious alternative to rice. Have your bacon and eggs for breakfast with some almond bread smothered in salty butter and a cup of coffee with cream. Have fun learning about Keto cookery. You will be amazed at some of the wonderful recipes out there. Crabs were definitely detrimental to my health in a big way, particularly my mental health. For the first time in my life I feel happy. I’m 50 yrs old.
