Forget the word “diet”. I’m eating low carb/keto for about two months now. Before, I was always hungry, always thought about food. My stomach never felt good. I had awful heartburn all the time, so I took Prilosec every other day! Now the inflammation is gone because I lost all the “water weight”. Yay!! The side effects are amazing. I feel better than I have in years. No more heartburn! This isn’t a diet. It’s a new way of life for me, and I’ll never go back.
I follow keto and got off 2-Insulins that equaled 5 shots per day and metformin pills @ 1000 mg twice a day and 1 kidney med. Keto has changed my life fior the better. I’m also a health coach for weight loss and nutrition and everyone is different when it comes to weight loss and health. My final #s -95 lbs/22 pants to size 8 and 2x too to small and feel and look great inside and out.
When you eat foods high in carbohydrates and fat, your body naturally produces glucose. Carbohydrates are the easiest thing for the body to process, and therefore it will use them first – resulting in the excess fats to be stored immediately. In turn, this causes weight gain and health problems that are associated with high fat, high carbohydrate diets (NOT keto).
In fact, most folks have enough stored body fat to fuel aerobic activity for days and days without running out of energy. For example, a 150 pound dude at a hot, sexy and ripped at 8% body fat still carries 12 pounds of storage fat – which at 3500 calories per pound of fat can easily liberate 42,000 calories of useable fuel for exercise. You’ve got those same thousands of calories sitting around your waist, abs, hip, butt and thighs – just sitting there, waiting to be burnt.
At one point in the early 2000s, approximately 10 percent of the country was on a low-carb diet. That’s insane. What’s more, people actively started avoiding carbs even if they weren’t on a diet. “A year ago, if you asked consumers what they watch, 11 percent would have said carbs,'' Michael Polk, the chief operating officer at Unilever-Best Foods, told The Times. “Today if you ask, 40 percent of consumers say they are watching carbs. In our opinion, this has evolved into a major shift in consumer behavior.” Atkins was able to build an industry out of his diet advice: Atkins Nutritionals, which cranked out low-carb meals and snacks, was at one point valued at approximately half a billion dollars.
Transformation Tuesday::: I wore shorts once last year, i felt good because they were a size 16 I think, down from a size 20. My size 2 shorts in the after picture are now too big. About a year between these pictures and at least 100lbs. I was working out, but @coach_jmo had just had the food conversation with me. It was vacation time and I was sad about not being beach ready in a little over 3 months. 😂 I was still making bad choices to help me cope with my weight gain from Postpartum depression and anxiety. I was still eating horribly, with cheat weekends and lots of pizza. 😂 I still thought exercising was enough to help me reach my goals. Working out 7 days a week with my trainer and a Ketogenic diet have changed my life. Down from a size 18/20 to a Size 0/2, over 130 pounds, and over 115 inches. 🎉🙌🎊
You indicate that exogenous ketones do not shut down the ability, of your body, to oxidize fat. Is that to say it does not have an effect on your body at all? My specific question is… does my body oxidize less fat, when supplementing with exogenous ketones? I think you indicate in your article that it could. I would expect it to, in that if I supplement then my body would not “need” to oxidize the fat to provide the energy.
No offense brother, but this whole article is a big selling advertisement. The health benefits of a “low – carb, high – fat” diet are well known and proven. I directly blame nutritionists, like yourself, for the fact that ~70% of American is considered obese now, not fat, obese. And the fact that Heart Disease is the number 2 killer in America now, second only to cancer.
Problem is you referred Keto as a Diet and not a lifestyle that you choose to live bye. When you relax and just eat a ketogenic lifestyle for an extended period of time meaning at least 4 months or more you don’t need to count everything so closely as you did and really when I look at my fellow co workers and kids that my children go to school with it’s easy to see how that slice of bread, bowl of pasta and piece of cake is destroying American Health.
All I can say is…Keto has been AMAZING for me and a lifesaver. Instated this journey at 240lbs. I’ve been obese for 20 years. My cholesterol was awful. Triglycerides were massively high. I was a walking heart attack. I’ve lost 40 lbs since January and 3 sizes, and a TON of inches. I’ve never felt better in my life. I have so much energy. At 51 I’m going to a local amusement park, walking ten miles and riding record breaking coasters. My cholesterol? My doctor is amazed on all levels. Hes applauding my bew health lifestyle. And I know literally thousands of people online and off line who’ve had thecssme success and some who have lived this way for more than ten years. Just because you didn’t like it doesn’t make it bad. And btw…its not a free for all. Macros depend on the person. My fat levels, aren’t nearly that high and once you reach ketosis you cut down on the fat. THAT is when fat burning starts and the fat burning absolutely happens.
Fasting is another way to achieve ketosis. This doesn’t suggest going days without food, but rather intermittent fasting. You can eat for eight hours and then fast for 16 hours, or eat a low-calorie diet for a few days (about 1,200 daily calories if you’re a woman and 1,500 daily calories if you’re a man). As you take in less food, your body uses more of its fat stores for fuel.
Children who discontinue the diet after achieving seizure freedom have about a 20% risk of seizures returning. The length of time until recurrence is highly variable but averages two years. This risk of recurrence compares with 10% for resective surgery (where part of the brain is removed) and 30–50% for anticonvulsant therapy. Of those that have a recurrence, just over half can regain freedom from seizures either with anticonvulsants or by returning to the ketogenic diet. Recurrence is more likely if, despite seizure freedom, an electroencephalogram (EEG) shows epileptiform spikes, which indicate epileptic activity in the brain but are below the level that will cause a seizure. Recurrence is also likely if an MRI scan shows focal abnormalities (for example, as in children with tuberous sclerosis). Such children may remain on the diet longer than average, and it has been suggested that children with tuberous sclerosis who achieve seizure freedom could remain on the ketogenic diet indefinitely.
Protein: Keep in mind that keto is high-fat, and not high-protein, so you don’t need to eat very much meat. Too much protein turns into glucose in the body, making it harder to stay in ketosis. Stick to fatty cuts of grass-fed, pasture-raised, or wild meat, and wild-caught fish. Red meats, offal/organ meats, pork, eggs (preferably pastured), fish, shellfish, and whey protein concentrate.
I have read your article and lots of other stuff on Keto, but I still don’t understand why it has to be so high in fat? I am on a calorie controlled diet which should also be pushing me into ketosis (Optifast + veges) nutritionist suggestion to go hard for a month. But after that was looking at moving to a Ketogenic diet. I am just having a hard time with understanding why it has to be high fat. Can you help me understand? Also love your writing style (particularly referencing Ace Ventura).
Because tumor cells are inefficient in processing ketone bodies for energy, the ketogenic diet has also been suggested as a treatment for cancer. A 2018 review looked at the evidence from preclinical and clinical studies of ketogenic diets in cancer therapy. The clinical studies in humans are typically very small, with some providing weak evidence for anti-tumour effect, particularly for glioblastoma, but in other cancers and studies, no anti-tumour effect was seen. Taken together, results from preclinical studies, albeit sometimes contradictory, tend to support an anti-tumor effect rather than a pro-tumor effect of the KD for most solid cancers.
“Instead of engaging in the next popular diet that would last only a few weeks to months (for most people that includes a ketogenic diet), try to embrace change that is sustainable over the long term. A balanced, unprocessed diet, rich in very colorful fruits and vegetables, lean meats, fish, whole grains, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and lots of water seems to have the best evidence for a long, healthier, vibrant life."
"One of the most amazing things that can happen is finding someone who sees everything you are and won't let you be anything less. They see the potential of you. They see endless possibilities. And through their eyes, you start to see yourself the same way. As someone who matters. As someone who can make a difference in this world. If you're lucky enough to find this person, never let them go" . . . . . From the day we met, he's never seen me for my weight. He saw me for me. It's so much fun to go through life with this guy.
