I started Keto 6 months ago and my physical and mental health has never been better. I used to suffer pretty bad mood swings.They are now gone. Bloating has completely gone. Low energy has gone. I have lost lots of weight and people tell me I look younger. My skin glows and my hair shines. I genuinely feel amazing and this is most certainly not a fad diet. This is for life. I wouldn’t dream of going back to eating rice and pasta. There are so many interesting alternative to carbs and some great recipes now online that food and cooking has become really exciting and experimental. I make great Keto ice cream. The first 2 weeks were awful yes, it’s called Keto flu. It’s your body adjusting to being a fat burner as opposed to a sugar burner. Then WOW did I feel good. It’s completely changed my life and my relationship with other people. My kids have told me they love the new “calmer” me and are much happier. I would urge anyone to really try this lifestyle choice and give it at least 6 months, experiment with recipes. Caulirice fried in butter with some chicken stock and garlic is a delicious alternative to rice. Have your bacon and eggs for breakfast with some almond bread smothered in salty butter and a cup of coffee with cream. Have fun learning about Keto cookery. You will be amazed at some of the wonderful recipes out there. Crabs were definitely detrimental to my health in a big way, particularly my mental health. For the first time in my life I feel happy. I’m 50 yrs old.

Just this week, a 25,000-person study presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Munich suggested that people on the lowest-carb diets had the highest risk of dying from cancer, cardiovascular conditions, and all other causes. Another study, published this month in the Lancet, also found that people who followed diets that were low in carbs and high in animal proteins had a higher risk of early death compared to those who consumed carbs in moderation. (The opposite was true, however, for low-carb dieters who opted for plant-based proteins over meat and dairy.)
Thanks for sharing this information and your experience. I started Keto because I was having severe digestive issues where nearly everything seemed to make my tummy hurt. I saw that alot of the recipes and choices were gluten free since low carb, so I figured I’d try it and hopef5find some foods I COULD eat! I did strict for the first few weeks til I could see how it worked out and did find great relief in that there was nearly ZERO pain and bloating. Now I don’t do KETO, but I continue to substitute alot in the same manner… and I cook breads made with almond and coconut flour especially. I keep low sugar intake, but not nearly zero, and I try to keep within healthier carbs so no more pasta for instance, but maybe a little rice or sweet potatoes etc. I did start having hormone symptoms when doing strict keto and getting very tired also. I lost about 14 lbs right off then gained back about 5. I am starting to feel like I’m finding a good balance that works for me now, and I am thankful to have opened up some new nutrition ideas that my body seems to like better! I will say, I joined one fb group for KETOers, but found it to be very stressful as lots of snotty comments and attitudes… maybe isn’t that way in the entire KETO community, but was very off-putting! Through the years, I hold to my same theory on health and wellness : LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!
I’m glad I came across this post. One of my friends was advised to do Keto by her doctor due to insulin resistance and was talking about how much weight she has lost in a very short time period and I thought maybe it would be worthwhile to try myself for at least a jumpstart to weight loss. The more I read about the diet, the more concerned I was that eating that much fat would be detrimental to me because my cholesterol is slightly higher than normal, my family has a history of heart disease, and I had my gallbladder removed two years ago. It seems that after reading this post, my concerns may have been warranted. I’m glad to see something to balance out all of the positive press that keto seems to be receiving these days and give an alternate point of view. Great article! I tried Keto for a while & became a slave to food. I didn’t stick with it long enough to notice any effects on my health or energy, but the fact that all I could think about was what I could eat next and when, was enough for me to call it quits. I am in the military, and need to stay in top shape and have lots of energy, so my diet contains lots of protein, moderate fats, & moderate to high-carbs. I agree with the Keto advocates that fat is not bad, refined sugar has little to no nutritional value, and the Standard American Diet will probably kill us, but eating legumes and whole grains will not. Like you say, Keto might work for some, but it doesn’t seem practical for most of us. Thank you for your story and a common sense article.

Carbohydrate intake should begin shortly after the onset of activity; [and continue] at 15- to 20-min intervals throughout the activity.”

On a low carb or ketogenic diet my fasting blood sugar is 90-120. I think it may get higher the lower carb I go. Most internet sources say don’t worry about it, worry about your Ha1c. Is this insulin resistance? Anyone have better information? If I do a water fast my morning blood sugar will go down and down each day, til it reaches about 50 in 4 days. But as soon as I start eating it pops right back up.

I was Keto for 6 months and did not lose a pound ! Couldn’t figure out WHY – I was doing 36hr fast, staying in my macros etc… So after 6 months of NO progress I switched it up , and lost 11 pounds in 1 month. AND that was with adding in more carbs, grains, fruit etc.. I think Keto works for some and those that are very large will initially drop as they would on any diet plan cutting out the junk. It wasn’t for me .

When a ketone ester drink was taken pre-workout, the muscle used far less glycogen compared to when the pre-workout drink contained carbohydrate. The high levels of blood ketones meant that the muscle used ketones as a fuel before needing to use glycogen. Reducing reliance on muscle glycogen could improve performance and decrease the time for muscle glycogen to fully recover between exercise bouts.

At the beginning of the year I was counting calories, I was losing weight but I was eating the same thing....every day....never deviating. I lasted 4 months. The lowest I ever hit was 325, starting from 347. I mean that is not bad, and I was losing weight, but I was so bored with my food. Since starting Keto, I am already down to 328 IN TWO WEEKS. Awesome info. I’ve been LCHF moderate protein (about 1 g per lean lbs/mass) and 50-100g of carbs for about a year. I’d consume around 2500 cals. I’m active 4-5 days a week (60-90 min cycling sessions) I started using MCT/Butter coffee. It surpressd my appetite and I would only eat whole food at lunch/dinner…still LCHF, but since my appetite was lower I was only takin in about 1800 cals. After about 2 weeks I started to gain body fat. Do you think the reduced caloric intake is the culprit? Should I “force” myself to eat…maybe up the MCT intake to make up the difference?
The trick with the rice is to find a substitute, and we’ve already looked at cauliflower rice. Avoid over grating your cauliflower. You don’t want it so fine that it is a fine powder for this dish. It still needs to have a rice texture. You will also need to add some cream cheese to the cauliflower to work for this rice substitute. Otherwise you’ll just get the cauliflower everywhere!

The process of generation ketones (ketogenesis) is kept in check by the presence of insulin in the body. Insulin regulates the flow of fatty acids from our fat cells, and it acts in a feedback loop to regulate ketogenesis. As long as insulin is circulating within the body, in general, the flow of fatty acids and the production of ketone bodies will be limited to a range that is not dangerous.  In contrast, ketoacidosis is a condition associated with a lack of insulin.  For example, it can manifest in type 1 diabetics who fail to inject enough insulin, or who are newly diagnosed.

Doctors at the Mayo Clinic created a formula that manipulated the ketogenic effect that came with complete fasting by instead limiting a patient’s intake of carbohydrates. But while carbohydrates can help you have a better workout, go faster, or go longer, this only applies to acute, in-the-moment performance. Once you take a look (which you’re about to do) at the long-term effects of chronic high blood sugar levels, things change drastically. If the damage that you’re above to discover is worth it to you, then you are either mildly masochistic or you value performance much more than health.
When glucose levels are low, especially over time, most cells will switch to using ketone bodies for fuel. Ketones allow cells to be metabolically flexible, so to speak. Even the brain and nerve cells, which are heavily dependent on glucose can utilize ketone bodies for fuel. This ability of most normal cells to use ketones when glucose is unavailable indicates that their cellular mitochondria are healthy and functioning properly. 
Devine says not to jump right into keto cycling. “I would definitely not try keto cycling until you’re about two to three months into your keto diet,” she says. “That's because you need to make sure your body is fat adapted so that it can get back into ketosis easily.” In her practice, Devine has noticed that if the body is used to being in ketosis, it’ll snap back more quickly after eating a carb-heavy meal than if a person is new to keto, though there’s no firm research to support that this is always the case.
Carbohydrates are your body's favorite fuel source; it breaks them down into glucose. Without a steady intake of carbohydrates, your body turns to using protein for fuel. But if you also are limiting how much protein you eat, your body is forced to burn stored fat as its primary source of fuel. That can result in weight loss, and ketones are a byproduct of burning fat.
This website is helpful I gained ten pounds just by snacking. I on the Keto diet with 15 carbs a day I stopped all snacking, stopped staying up late because it screws up cortisol / hormones which causes weight gain so I started going to bed at 9:30 on the dot. I typically eat one meal a day a green salad with either, chicken or prawns and simple homemade dressing . Sometimes I do a big glass of a low carb, a chocolate mocha protein drink with a nut milk and ice blended this does the trick. I never eat after 4:00. I have coffee with a little butter and drink lots of water I use Ketostix every other day to see if I’m still in ketosis. I did get foot cramps and increased sea salt intake and it stopped. I love fasting and going to yoga I feel clearer, lighter and just happier. Just keep with a program and you will see light at the end of the tunnel. Some people have great success with zero carbs. I have never tried it but read about it.

Want candy but you don’t want to stray from keto? A low-carb peanut butter cup has about the same calories, gram per gram, as a Reese’s. Want to slap all that bacon between something other than lettuce wraps? Some low-carb bread will run you $7.99 per loaf whereas bread that doesn’t taste like sadness with the same number of calories per slice is generally about half the cost. How about chocolate? A chocolate brand that boldly calls itself ‘The Good Chocolate’ is sweetened with a sugar alcohol commonly associated with some nasty gastrointestinal effects when consumed excessively. It’s also $8 for a 2.5-oz bar, and about as calorically dense as a Hershey’s bar. Low-carb flour? Not surprisingly, it costs more than normal old flour, and the more expensive one has more calories.
I think there is a different approach to weight loss that works for every person! So you have to find what works for you. I did this as a diet for 8 months and lost 56lbs about 5 years ago before it became as popular as it is now. I started it as 10 day detox then moved to paleo but my weight loss stalled. I knew that low carb had worked for me before but I wanted more whole foods. So in searching for low carb Paleo, I stumbled on Keto. I completely healed my pre-diabetes and sugar issues. Even after resuming “normal” eating. As I have seen this diet rise in popularity, I have seen so many different “styles” of it that don’t really make sense with what I knew it to be. I also think there are so many people who just jump on the bandwagon and want the quick facts, the meal plan, etc. I get that people are busy but this is YOUR body. DO YOUR RESEARCH. Any way of eating has an impact on your hormones and it is important that you seek out experts rather than rely on information passed to you from your neighbor’s sister. There is a reason that people become experts. Our bodies are amazing creations! An expert can look at your history and determine that you might have metabolic damage and until you reset it, you won’t experience weight loss. An expert can listen to your symptoms and tell you what is normal or what could be an underlying Thyroid issue. An expert can look at your goals and determine the right protocol. If you are a body builder then you will need some carbs. If you are just looking to lose weight then you could do strict keto. It’s not just about what food goes into your body. Also, there’s so many people who are just using it as an excuse to load up on steak, butter, and cheese (just like with Atkins). But you aren’t doing yourself any good if you aren’t getting GOOD QUALITY fats from things like salmon and avocado. Some excellent reading would be Carb Nite solution. Keto meals seemed so heavy and rich to me, and it just wasn't how I was used to eating. Plus, I consider myself a flexitarian, so the thought of eating more meat—and more often than I typically would—gave me pause. Dr. Axe assured me that even vegetarians could pull off a keto diet if they planned well enough. It can be postulated that the net balance of the contrasting stimuli results in a general reduction of perceived hunger and food intake. More studies are needed to explore the mechanism of potential beneficial effects of KD on food control.
Some people believe elite athletes benefit from keto cycling because their bodies use extra carbohydrates as energy to power through difficult workouts and races. I’ve always heard that the brain functions well on ketones. Gluconeogenisis typically reduces ketosis, though as well? This is the first time I’ve heard anyone say the brain can’t use anything but glucose. I know there’s *preferred* sources of fuel over others, but I was also fairly certain other sources were fine.. or humans might be in a bit of trouble.

Also, take special note of sugar alcohols like sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, and isomalt. Sugar alcohols are derived from plant products (ie., fruits and berries), though their carbs are uniquely altered through chemical processing. While sugar alcohols provide fewer calories than table sugar, people often overeat them because they are labeled as “sugar-free” or “no sugar added” foods. This is problematic because they can still spike blood glucose levels due to their carb content. You still need to account for them in your diet plan.[2] Your best bet is to go with erythritol because it doesn’t cause blood sugar or insulin spikes.
I love your site but your note about Diabetic Ketoacidosis is completely wrong. DKA is not something that happens because your body produces too many ketones. It is something that happens when your body produces too many ketones, and you don’t have any insulin in your system. As long as a Type 1 Diabetic takes insulin they will NOT go into DKA. Especially since DKA requires high ketones, high sugars, and low insulin.

I too, quit the keto diet. I could not lose weight. Lost muscle tone, had my bloodwork done to check why I wasn’t losing. Turns out my cholesterol level went up and so did my blood pressure. I am 57 years old. I went back to my old eating habits and immediately lost a couple pounds. It’s not for everyone. I think there is a different approach to weight loss that works for every person! So you have to find what works for you. I did this as a diet for 8 months and lost 56lbs about 5 years ago before it became as popular as it is now. I started it as 10 day detox then moved to paleo but my weight loss stalled. I knew that low carb had worked for me before but I wanted more whole foods. So in searching for low carb Paleo, I stumbled on Keto. I completely healed my pre-diabetes and sugar issues. Even after resuming “normal” eating. As I have seen this diet rise in popularity, I have seen so many different “styles” of it that don’t really make sense with what I knew it to be. I also think there are so many people who just jump on the bandwagon and want the quick facts, the meal plan, etc. I get that people are busy but this is YOUR body. DO YOUR RESEARCH. Any way of eating has an impact on your hormones and it is important that you seek out experts rather than rely on information passed to you from your neighbor’s sister. There is a reason that people become experts. Our bodies are amazing creations! An expert can look at your history and determine that you might have metabolic damage and until you reset it, you won’t experience weight loss. An expert can listen to your symptoms and tell you what is normal or what could be an underlying Thyroid issue. An expert can look at your goals and determine the right protocol. If you are a body builder then you will need some carbs. If you are just looking to lose weight then you could do strict keto. It’s not just about what food goes into your body. Also, there’s so many people who are just using it as an excuse to load up on steak, butter, and cheese (just like with Atkins).
