The keto diet has been on everyone's radar for a while now. The low-carb, high-fat diet is said to be a game changer for many people who want to lose weight. Although it may seem like a trend diet, it certainly shouldn't be treated as one; many experts say that the keto diet requires close supervision. However, many people who have done keto the right way have experienced great weight-loss success from the diet. Here are 20 before-and-after photos that prove just how effective this diet can be.
Curiously, this study was funded by the Nutrition Science Initiative (NuSI), a group with the aim of producing “conclusive results in the next decade” in a sometimes confusing nutritional landscape. They claim our nutritional guidelines are “based on inconclusive science,” and though their website doesn’t directly indicate any bias, their research so far focuses on the effects of carbohydrates on obesity. This was the second published study that received funding from the institute. In the first study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2016, researchers hypothesized that a low-carbohydrate diet increased energy expenditure. Results said otherwise:

Swanson, a professor of neurology who has researched the impacts of ketogenic diets on inflammation in the brain, got curious about the ketogenic diet when trying to treat the inflammation that persists for days after a person suffers a stroke. When he tried inducing a ketogenic state in mice with stroke injuries, he said, “I was overwhelmed by the effect.” Blocking glucose metabolism worked to suppress inflammatory genes, which in turn helped stroke healing.
Eat less often. It’s much easier to eat fewer calories and maintain higher levels of ketosis when you eat less meals. Instead of snacking throughout the day, try getting all of your calories from 2-3 meals every day. You can also try intermittent fasting by restricting all your meals to an 8-hour eating window. This will allow your blood sugar and insulin to drop down to baseline levels so that your body can go into its fasting state and burn body fat for fuel.
There are many ways in which epilepsy occurs. I appreciate you sharing your story. In this day and age Keto is the holy grail for some. There are those of us though that do not respond well. I’m one of them. I couldn’t lose weight, I didn’t feel good (and that was after the Keto “flu”) and my periods were coming every 2 weeks (I’m 48 and peri-menopausal). What I did find, after the same soul searching, was that I do have some sort of weird physical reaction to wheat in any form. If I avoid it, I feel better. Whatever works, we’re all unique and what works for one will not work for all. That’s my big take away. I can appreciate that people have had success but something about going THAT low in my carbs created a stress response in my body. Also, I was needing to use my emergency Xanax a whole lot more. Since then, it’s the same 10-15 pounds that I keep losing and gaining back. Love your mantras- I’ve written a few down in my journal and some just ring in my head like a music track- never two in a row!! Can’t outrun your fork!! The one about losing weight, looking good in the mirror, then world domination is my favorite. With keto, it gets me fantastic and very quick results and I go with a recarb meal (not recarb day) once a week. Eat a little more carbs after workouts. Now with the strips, I can see if what I’m doing post-workout keeps me in keto.
