My question is: what if I want to be in ketosis for all the reasons mentioned in the Life Extension article and because I don't feel a strong urge to eat in between meals when I go lower carb and if I up carb intake I get hungrier more frequently and get urges . . . BUT on the flip side, I don't seem to digest fat all that well(dairy in particular is a no-no) and constipation is an issue and starchy carbs seem to help with that. It's a bit of a catch-22.

Or, there’s plain old cornstarch relabeled as super-duper muscle engorging waxy maize. Additionally, they remarked that “concerns about adverse metabolic effects of the Atkins diet were not substantiated within the 12-month study period.”  They acknowledged that more research needs to be done on the long-term effects on cardiovascular and metabolic health especially on men. Sorry, I guess I read your comment wrong. You are wondering what to do about sugar levels, weight, and enjoy life. Personally, I have found that eating mindfully and listening to YOUR body is your best resource. No diet can tell you what to do, only your body can do that. Do you feel good eating more carbs? Do you feel better eating less carbs? Do you feel better fasting or not? Your body will tell you what to do. Also, I want to ask, what is the reason for wanting to lose weight? Is it purely health? Have you had tests that tell you your health is bad? Sometimes we get stuck on a specific number for what we “want” to weigh, which actually has NOTHING to do with out health. I recommend the book, Health at Every Size if you want to learn more about that. All of us have a weight set point, and for some, that is higher..which may be hard to accept. If I were you, I would take the focus OFF of weight loss completely and focus on eating in a way that nourishes you and makes you feel good and happy. Life is too short to focus on what is “right” and “wrong.”

Incidentally, glucose can “stick” to cholesterol particles and render these particles extremely dangerous from a heart health standpoint, which is why it’s all the more important to control blood sugar levels if you’re eating a “high-fat diet.”
Today we had a wellness clinic at work! I have not been to a PCP in about 7 or 8 years due to white coat syndrome, but with my new found confidence, I decided it was time to step into some tests. At the clinic they tested Blood Pressure, Blood Glucose, Total and Good Cholesterol, and Bone Density. I stepped into the ring and was very anxious to get it over with, I felt my blood pressure elevate and I felt like my forehead was gonna pop while waiting in line for my blood pressure to be read...it doesn't help that I had a venti coffee from starbucks and 32oz of black tea throughout the morning. Waited for the results which were elevated as expected, but only the top number...I was actually 140/62. Next up was blood glucose and cholesterol, I was excited to see what KETO had done for me here! The nurse pricked my finger and filled the testing unit, she said "Wow, excellent!" My total Cholesterol was 100 and my good cholesterol was 57 and my Blood Glucose was 90! She asked me how I was doing it and we had some discussion about KETO and how I have lost almost 100 pounds and she bought right in and said " I think I was meant to meet you today!" That brought a big smile to my face. Next was Bone Density and then off to a healthcare specialist. They took a look at my numbers and the only concern they had was my bone density. They suggested weight training and they were super impressed with my weight-loss journey.

You’re transitioning. Your body is equipped to process a high intake of carbs and a lower intake of fat. Your body needs to create enzymes to be able to do this. In the transitional period, the brain may run low on energy which can lead to grogginess, nausea, and headaches. If you’re having a large problem with this, you can choose to reduce carb intake gradually.
Ketone breath meters: The breath test method, where you blow into a meter, measures acetone levels in the breath. Acetones are one of three types of water-soluble ketone molecules; and in this type of test, the more you have, the farther you are into ketosis. Breath meters are more accurate than urine strips in determining whether you’re in ketosis or not.
Thanks for all of the great info!! I have Hashimoto’s and would really like to try a high fat/low carb diet. You mentioned that this might not be a good option for people with thyroid issues. How do you recommend I modify my diet to lose weight taking into consideration the Hashimoto’s. I take Westhroid, a non-synthetic thyroid supplement to help with my sluggish thyroid. When examining the studies, the researchers noted that, on average, the participants in the VLCKD groups lost about 2 lbs. more of bodyweight compared to the low-fat diet groups.  This difference was statistically significant and described as “moderate”. The researchers also noted greater improvements in triglycerides, blood pressure, and HDL cholesterol in the VLCKD group compared to the low-fat diet group.
Ketone esters: These are the raw ketones (in this case, beta-hydroxybutryate) that are not bound to any other compound. These exogenous ketones can be utilized quicker and potentially have a better effect at raising blood ketone levels as your body doesn’t have to cleave the BHB from any other compound. The downside? They typically have a foul taste and can cause an upset stomach.
The Standard American Diet (SAD) is predominantly composed of carbohydrates making the body very good at breaking down carbohydrates for fuel but not as efficient at breaking down stored fat. The ketosis diet truly trains the body to burn fat for fuel and even after discontinuing a ketogenic plan the body is still much more efficient at breaking down stored body fat.
Protein: When people first reduce carbohydrates in their diets, it doesn't seem as though the amount of protein they eat is as important to ketosis as it often becomes later on. For example, people on the Atkins diet often eat fairly large amounts of protein in the early stages and remain in ketosis. However, over time, some (perhaps most) people need to be more careful about the amount of protein they eat as (anecdotally) the bodies of many people seem to "get better" at converting protein into glucose (gluconeogenesis). At that point, each individual needs to experiment to see if too much protein is throwing them out of ketosis and adjust as necessary.

"Mushrooms are mostly made of protein, fiber, and water, making them very filling," said Alex Ruani, nutrition science educator at The Health Sciences Academy. Low-starch foods like mushrooms are unlikely to kick you out of ketosis, she suggested, making them an ideal staple during low-carb eating. The point where I care more about experiences rather than the food that goes in my mouth. The point where I love my body just as it is, no matter what size I am.
